Need help with mechanics!!

Archive: 6 posts

Ok so I was wondering... How do people make the platform where it rises to a certain point by using a switch then the same platform rises again using another switch? I want to make like some sort of floating stair way that keeps rising everytime you pull a different switch.

All help will be much appreciated, thank you.

Hmm... this one's tricky.
I'd say something you could do is to hide small areas of dissolve material to where you want the platform to stay still, and will be unable to move, due to the dissolve material being in the way. Each switch will connect to each dissolve piece, allowing the platform to go higher. However, the switch would have to be set to move in a single direction upwards, so a magnetic key would be neccesary to connect to the switch and set it to Direction, and invert if neccessary.

Hope this helps!

Here's what I would do:
Set up the platform with a directional piston controlled by the first switch but moving as if all switches have been activated. For example, say you have ground floor, an intermediate floor and the top floor, the first switch should move the piston between the ground floor and the top floor. Make sure the piston's stiff.
Lower the piston's strength to, say, 5. This allows you to limit the piston's movement with winches set to strength 10.
Add a directional winch for each intermediate floor you want the platform to stop at. The winch should be placed between the floor and the platform, and vary in length between the height of the intermediate floor and the maximum piston length, i.e. the top floor (or larger).

Or something like that...

The idea is that initially the piston will be retracted, and winches won't have any effect on the platform (winches only pull, don't push). The first switch will make the piston want to go to the top floor, but it will be stopped by the pull of those winches, until, one by one, their switches are actived and they slacken to allow the piston to move further up.

these are good tips but I think i didn't explain it well enough LOL. Ok basicly im gonna use three small platforms, on all three layers so thats 9 platforms. When activated via switch they will all rise to form a sort of stair way. After the player reaches the last and highest platform they will do something like a puzzle to reach the next switch making the " floating stair way" rise once again, but this time i want the lowest platform to be the highest and the former highest platform to be the lowest. This is quite hard to explain but its probably even harder to do LOL. I don't even know if its possible but I'm sure i've seen it in some levels. Again the tips where good, but my first explanation wasnt clear enough.2011-01-03 18:33:00

Made this a while ago with my video camera.

Also it is possible to use mutual exclusion logic but I didn't know how to use that at the time

Hope that helps!

Either of our solutions should still work. You just have to build the same setup 9 times, and vary the height of the intermediate stops for each platform so that they form the stairway.
