A Lost Cause?

Archive: 19 posts

Hello forum,

In LBP there were many creators that made magnificent things; things Mm couldn't even think we could do. For those of us who couldn't make these "superior" levels, do you think we will have a chance of getting anything with a decent ammount of views in LBP 2? Because things ar more complicated and and intricate and such.

I, for one, haven't published one of these outstanding levels but I have made some pretty awesome things with some neat logic. (Now that i look back at it I wish I published more instead of just creating aimless things.)

Restated Question: Since LBP2 is more complex and has more people cranking out crazy levels, will people that are not so caught up with every aspect of logic or "tip/exploit" (in LBP 1 or 2) be able to make top notch levels or generate levels with tons of views?

Yes, make something fun! that's all that matters.

I guarantee something that's fun and/or addictive will get decatople the plays of tech demos in retail. And personally I like to stray as far from glitches and exploits anyway.

Personally, I don't think I'm an awesome, magnificent, super talented creator, but I do enjoy making things in LBP. Creating things is easier in LBP2 than in 1. If you can wrap your head around some basic logic ideas it's not really hard at all. I think though, a lot of talented creators from LBP1 knew ways of making logic, and so going into LBP2 they can really tinker around and make stuff that wasn't even imaginable in LBP1, without having to worry about the thermometer as much.

Another thing to mention. LBP1 was a little restricted on what you could make. You can now make movies and music as well as levels/games. Some of the creators from LBP1 might not have been so adept in levels, but they were great at cinematic work. LBP2 will let people like them show off what they can do in ways LBP1 couldn't. That's for sure.

On top of all this, if someone was gifted in one area (say AI), if they joined a team and collaborated they could really make something special.

Since I feel I'm going a little off-topic, I'll just directly answer the question. Yes, I think inexperienced beginners will be able to make the most outstanding levels. As long as they put the time into it and have a goal, they can do it.

This goes further than one may think!

The level "Ramp" (now deleted), got 2 million plays because it was ridiculously simple and fun. Do you know what it was? A giant ramp...that's it. Have fun creating, and create fun for others. "Fun Shall Prevail".

This is the great thing about LBP2, you don't have to be a logic nut to crank out a variety of really fun stuff, and at the same time, the tools are there for logic guys to eat up. You might have more competition now since people who weren't particularly good at logic will now have better levels.

The logic needed to make things happen in a level, in practice, is really pretty simple. It doesn't hurt to know it and think outside the box, but 90% of the time, totally basic stuff did and does the trick, and the really tricky stuff might just be a small section, or a 'neat' gimmick thing that's fun for awhile, but doesn't last. My all time favorite LBP1 level is H.A.T.E. by Voltiare and the only logic in it is permanent switches. I never play Little Big Calculator, or even 'cool' things like Libidus more than once or twice.

The thing with LBP2, is that alot of people will be doing extensive customization to make their own unique gameplay and full games, but I can't see that if someone puts out a 5 to 10 level series that it will get constant plays forever, while nothing else does. There will be exceptions, like... the perfect chess board or something... but I bet people will still want to log on and play 'a good level' every few days, and not wait for the handful of epic multi-level game projects that will come along every 6 months or so, or keep replaying the same 3 or 4 series over, and over, and over.

Anyway...don't worry about plays, since LBP.me will be a cool instrument that will help all levels to have the fair amount of visits they deserve.
LBP.me is even helping old levels of LBP1 to get more visibility

Obviously anyone who has spent more time in the beta or something will be able to work faster than someone playing it for the first time.
The more time spent in create mode, the eaiser/faster your levels will be to make.

But with the improved tools, average creators can now make things they couldn't before. (like me building a controllable dinosaur)
However I do hope the in game tutorials are a little more in depth than in LBP1.

creating stuff in LBP2 is really easy because logic in lbp2 is really simple the best piece of logic is the microchip and the controlinator you can do almost anything its great but you do have to know a bit about logic which means you should start learning a bit more if you want to create stuff but other than that its incredibly easy 2011-01-03 13:14:00

Heres hoping that the new system will give everybody an even playing field as far as the availability of a level goes. Every one will get an even chance but the really good will go really far.

That would be nice.

No matter what tools are provided, there are crazy-talented people out there that will make amazing things with them. Look at Minecraft, for example. It's each person's choice whether they enjoy that or not, and I definitely enjoy seeing all the insane levels out there. It makes me want to step up my game even more! Levels like Zephyr Valley, Starcruiser, and False Idols blew me away when I first played them and forced me to reset the bar for creating.

A more versatile creating toolkit is a win-win for all involved, even though seeing an amazing level can be an ego-buster sometimes!

that was nice to read^ thanks. The Tribe is still one of the best to me and me want to step my game up. The False Idols levels are so old and the only one I didn't delete & lock up was part III. Maybe I will try to give False Idols another go as a 'game' in LBP2 afterall.2011-01-05 02:54:00

The first time I played the False Idols series I thought there was nothing like it out there! We're usually our own worst critic and LBP2 opens up a lot of new possibilities...give it another go!

Also thanks a ton for those custom controllinators! ^

There's only one way to be 100% sure of getting lapsed in LBP2: Not trying.2011-01-05 03:01:00

Yeah, to pass the time I am finishing a few levels in my moon. (one is about survival, the other just a fun platformer) I think when LBP 2 comes out I am going to make a really simplistic level like the ramp level to see what happens. I played two levels today on LBP and they both had over 6,000 views and 800 hearts. I loaded them up and both were broken and didn't even work! It made me mad because it looked like the person that made it took 5 minutes out of their day to make the level. While my levels have like 30 views and are actually decent. (well the one that I am releasing called Platformer is.) Grr.2011-01-05 16:06:00

I have to echo what foofles said, MAKE IT FUN!!! Most of my stuff, I just play around with in create mode and when I hit on something I find fun.. then it makes it into a level somewhere. I don't do it to get tons of plays.. I do it because I enjoy it. I also enjoy decorating and making things look cool and interesting. If others enjoy it, the rest is history.

For example.. Tower of Whoop is fun. There is no big huge boss at the end, there isn't a ton of complex gaming there. It is an awesome design that stays true to itself. ..and really really FUN!!!

I think problem of you level is is fact that is not known you probably didn't catch cool pages. Fact is cool pages what ever you like them or not they are main source of plays, this is why those levels get plays and eventually hearts. LBP.me might change that since your level will be easier to find, also mmpick will become plays heaven, but you really need to be lucky to get there. So maybe try to advertise you level more, remember to put them on level showcase of LBPC and make some screens to attract people, put your level on signature.

I still don't know LBP2 cool pages will work on larger number of people (currently is quite easy to be there on beta),so i can't give tips how to get there yet

The only way to have the kind of plays you could have in LBP will be to be MMpicked. Seriously. Or else you have a really huge friend list, is super popular on the net and also give ALOT of time promoting your stuff EVERYWHERE.
This is more like justice to me than the situation in LBP1 but it's hard cold justice. You put the max effort and do your best to get noticed or else your level will eat some severe dust. Trust me.
