How can I make a screen say different things?

Archive: 3 posts

OK, I'm currently making a level where throughout are scattered screens (made up of two pieces of cardboard, the frame and the monitor) that light up as you pass them (an LED light attached to a sensor switch). On the monitor part are stickers that spell out words and phrases. I want some of these screens to change when you pass other sensor switches (For example I want a sign to tell you to wait, and if you jump into the abyss instead of waiting I want it to switch to 'I told you to wait.&apos. I semi-achieved the effect I wanted by attaching an emitter to the 'Wait' screen and then hooking the sensor in the pit to it, and having it emit a second complete screen to the middle thin layer. While that technically works, I'd much rather have a much cleaner and nicer effect.

I tried having two emitters, one hooked to the sensor switch and one by itself. The lone one emitted the WAIT monitor and I wanted the sensor to emit the changed one but the WAIT monitor didn't disappear, so that didn't work.

I'm really a rookie creator (I've only been playing about a week, ha) so if anyone can help, simple terms and detailed instructions would be nice.

Thank you!

I think I have a solution

First make the screen on a thin layer and get a piece of glass/smooth glass and put it as the screen.
Then you want to make two emitters like you have done but have them emit 1-fats behind he glass.
Make a toggle switch or a dissolve switch if you want it to work once.
Make the two pairs of mag keys and link them to the emitters making sure they are one-shot.

The effect:
When the player triggers the sensor switch, the toggle/dissolve will be activated changing the emitter that is activated. The glass in front will remove the smokey effect of when the object vanishes. With correct timing and the logic setup correctly you will have a changing led display!

Hope that helps!

Thank you very much for your help! I ended up doing it in a slightly different way, but your suggestion of having a thin glass layer in front of the monitor was perfect. I never knew that glass could cause the dissolve effect to go away, a very useful thing to know! 2011-01-02 21:50:00
