do sackbots mean the end of created characters?

Archive: 15 posts

i haven't been on here in a long time, so if this thread has been made, my bad.

anyway, with the introduction of sackbots in LBP2, does anyone think that they will take over as the new sackboy cutouts (if you remember, sackboy cutouts were used heavily for characters in plenty of peoples levels in LBP instead of a created character) and make created characters even less frequent? sackboy cutouts are ok from time to time, but nothing beats a well made character (sackboy cutouts have nothing on dragons). now as far as sackbots being used as civilians or anything that's not an enemy, it's really no big deal. but if they start being used as enemies in almost every level, it could get rather boring.

does anyone else share my concerns or do you not care? for people in the beta, does this seem to be the case (sackbot overpopulation) or is it more of a 50/50 type thing? and if sackbots are dominating beta levels as characters/enemies, is it as dull as i'm fearing, or are they diverse enough where it's not that noticeable?

You're fears are unfounded. Beta levels are not overpopulated with sackbots, actually I wish more people used them, so much potential not even being utilized.2011-01-01 09:51:00

Well, there will be less humanoid created characters, but there are probably still characters people will create without using a sackbot, for example, in a level project i'm going to do in LBP2, I have several characters that aren't humanoid shaped or otherwise cant use a sackbot for certain reasons (such as dragons, characters that don't have legs, cube shaped characters, a humanoid robot whose head needs to open .etc). However, I don't have the beta so I can't prove this. LBP2's new tools appear to make creating characters easier too.2011-01-01 11:33:00

It might mean the end of terrible etchings and the start of terrible costumes, but anyone who ever prided themselves on epic boss or intricate enemy creations will still do their thing. I doubt I'll stop making multi jointed exo puppets, that Morgana won't make hand crafted creatures, and if nattura's beta levels are anything to go by, sackbots can't pass for a delicately edged animal. It still has it's place, and is still a desirable element to have.

Just the fact we can use followers for bolting means multi-joint swivel points are easier and more stable than ever. Same goes for turning things invisible in create to make nuanced layers of thin, thick & theck without constant dis-assembly.

I doubt that Sackbots will stop unique fantasy characters from being created.
Okay, maybe some people WILL try and keep using them - but I think, soon enough they would notice that using both Sackbots and created characters together is the key to making truly fascinating, special levels.

I think a good amount of the "sackboy cutout" type characters will be replaced by sackbots - which is good, because I felt the "sackboy cutout" is one of the ugliest, laziest character designs I've seen in LBP. But that's about it, I'm sure everyone will use what suits their purpose better. Sackbots and hand crafted have their own pros and cons, so it's all about what's right at the time.

Even then, sackbots are far superior to the "sackboy cutout" type things in LBP1... people still have a ton of control over their animation and behaviour, giving them life. And of course custom customization.

And now it's easier than ever to hand craft elaborate creatures.

Huzzah to your brilliant use of holograms, Foofles!

Oh, and your speech for your sackbots.

I think Sackbots will most definitely mean the end Sackboy cutouts, but created characters? No way.2011-01-01 23:52:00

I know that I plan on making some characters that aren't sackbots. It just depends on what people want. Cutouts were absolutely horrid and I'm glad that those won't be around anymore (at least I hope not!) and special character designs are possibly one of the most fun and rewarding things for people to do. I had this unfinished project in LBP1 using a custom character made entirely from blue wood and I certainly plan to use him in a future level because he's different from the average character. I personally believe it depends on the style of the levels for what people should use. Sackbots are awesome, but they only go so far with character design. Even some humanoid characters shouldn't be sackbots.

Just my 2 cents. :3

Compare the dragon mask costume to a dragon cut out that was made in many hours. Which looks better?2011-01-02 01:58:00

Well, at least now there's a sticker cut-out tool so sackboy cutouts will at least look better. Although I don't have the beta (I've preordered the Collector's Edition though), I have several characters in mind which would actually be more suited to sackbots, although I have a lot more which just cannot be made from cutouts. I will, however, probably use sackbots for random characters that just walk around in the level, to mkae them more interesting.2011-01-02 08:39:00

I was a bit worried about that too but Sackbots most likely replace Sackboy cutouts but they won't completely replace created characters. Or at least i hope won't, because i loved seeing created characters in community levels. Like the ones in AlfieAlpha's Resident Evil levels.
I still hope to see created characters in LBP2 although they won't be as common as Sackbots.
