Announcing comprehensive LBP.me integration!

Archive: 89 posts

After lots of hard work between Aya042 and myself, we're proud to announce complete LBP.me integration with LBPCentral! What does this mean, exactly? We're now capable of pulling down data from LBP.me, which means 100% LIVE level listings! Heart count, ratings, plays, and more are all dynamically grabbed from LBP.me and displayed on our end. Simply head to the Level Showcase and post a level like you would normally - you'll be presented with a new form that'll automatically take care of the rest. Here's what it looks like in a Level Showcase thread:

http://content.screencast.com/users/ConfusedCartman/folders/Jing/media/f0ffaa54-245c-4028-a5ec-0653478d0600/2010-12-30_2248.png

As mentioned, all of that data is pulled dynamically - everything from the level badge to the PSN to the description is all taken from LBP.me, so if anything about your level changes, those changes will be instantly reflected here. Cool, huh?

How does this work?
Well, we're not giving away code, but suffice to say that any level posted from here on out will contain a bit of BB Code similar to this: http://lbp.me/v/41rnb

comphermc Edit: If it's not working, ensure that you are not using capitalization in the code. It should be all lower-case. Fix'd

Obviously, it doesn't show up in your post publicly - only when you edit it. But we scan for it on our end, and when we see it, we grab it and use it to collect data about your level. It only works in the first post of any thread in the Level Showcase and Cool Levels for now, so don't try adding that BB Code anywhere else - it won't show up!

What if I remove that bit of BB Code?
We won't be able to show any data about your level, simply because we don't have your level's URL anymore. Now, we could save the URL on our end, so that removing it doesn't remove the live statistics, but we believe user control is number 1 - if you really want to remove it from your level, we're not stopping you.

Okay, so I just posted a level, and I don't see any statistics. What's up?
Two things could be wrong:

- One: you haven't refreshed the page. Due to technical limitations we can't grab data until the second page load on any posted level, so whoever posts that level won't see any data initially. Refresh the page to see it. On the upside, it only happens to whoever posts the level, and it only happens once - nobody else will experience the problem, so you don't have to worry about people visiting your thread and seeing no info. If you see it, they'll see it - promise!

- Two: you gave us a bad Level ID! Try appending the ID you used to the end of "http://lbp.me/v/" - if it gives a 404, that was the problem! Only way to be 100% sure - always copy and paste!

I've got older levels I want to apply this to - is that possible?
Of course! It's super easy. There's an LBP.me button in the advanced editor now that will take any LBP.me level link and wrap it in the appropriate tags for you, but if you want to do it the hard way, it's actually not hard at all. Just take your LBP.me level link, wrap it in tags, and stick that block of code anywhere in your level post (the bottom is probably the best place for it). We'll do the rest!

We've been working on this off and on for quite a while now, and we can't wait to see how useful it is to all of you. Let us know what you think!

Just incase Tom talked to me and make sure you have checks on the feed to not kill the site ill post a little section of the email.

We can't guarantee that they'll be available all the time (as the site has just launched we need to ensure the servers are not overloaded, as this will directly affect the lbp online game experience, so potentially widgets, feeds etc could be shut down to reduce server load.

I suggest that if you are building a web app using the feeds, cache them in your DB first, then output them however you like for your own purposes

Don't worry - we've got all sorts of things in place to ensure that the only time data doesn't display is when the user chooses to remove their level link. In all other cases, the goal is to preserve data and update it as often as is reasonable.

Yeah, I know exactly what the problem is - it's the "-" in the ID. It's on the list of bugs to fix come tomorrow, once Aya's woken up (aside from gamebreakers, we work together on code changes). Thanks for reporting it.

Also, for everyone else: check to ensure your LBP.me data is public. If it's not, we can't (as in, won't) use it. Because anyone can put anyone's level in a level post, we have to respect privacy settings.

I think this is a great idea!!! I just went and tried it with two of my levels, and they didn't work. I'm probably doing something wrong, but I'm not sure what. I'm going to put both the links and the actual code here, so you mod type people can check out this post and see what's going on if you want.

Here's the actual code, one of the levels has a - at the end of it, one doesn't:

http://lbp.me/v/0b6z-

http://lbp.me/v/qw7t3w

And here are the links to the levels in question:

http://lbp.me/v/qw7t3w

http://lbp.me/v/0b6z-

Like I said, I'm probably doing something wrong, lol, but I double checked the links and refreshed the page and I'm getting nothing.

Anyway, this is such an awesome site feature, though, guys, I love it! ^__^

It only works in the first post of any thread in the Level Showcase and Cool Levels for now, so don't try adding that BB Code anywhere else - it won't show up!

I don't think many people saw this line. In addition, it will only look for the first instance of the [lbpmelevelurl] tags in the first post, given it's in the right forum.

What does this mean?

It won't currently work for things like the Community Spotlight. For one, the Community Spotlight is not in the Level Showcase or Cool Levels forums. Two, it would only pull data for the first level listed, and the code for the other levels would be ignored.

Well, that's dumb, why would you do that?

There are a couple of reasons. Pulling the data multiple times in a single post is not exactly easy on the servers. In addition, we have to make sure that the code only works in the first post, else people can easily spam their levels all over the place with a very simple code. I came up with these same concerns independent from CC, and we agree it's the best course of action.

But... the spotlight?

Just because what we have in place does not cater to what the spotlight does, does not mean that it won't change over time. For now, my best suggestion for spotlight integration is find other ways to integrate lbp.me into the spotlight. Level badges can still be copied, in place of user screenshots, for example. In fact, if you find that every level in the spotlight has the lbp.me loadout, you can take a screenshot of that on their individual threads and embed the image manually. If one or two are missing, ask a moderator to give you a hand. We might be able to edit it into their post for them.

That said, I'm sure we can work something else out in the future, like allowing special permissions for the Official News Forum.

Just so everyone is aware, the code appears to be case sensitive. This means that [lbpmelevelurl] will work, but [LBPMELEVELURL] will not. I'm sure this is an oversight, so if it's not working, that's probably why.

In the Advanced Edit screen, there is a new icon, which looks like this: http://www.lbpcentral.com/images/lbpme.png

Currently, it spits out the the all-CAPS version of the code. Just change the case and it will work. I need to bug CC about fixing that.

This is a pretty cool feature and I'll be sure to utilize it as I begin creating in LBP2. I have a bit of a problem with the tone of "we're not giving out code", but I guess I'll let this one slide without a rant. ;-)

Yeah, I know exactly what the problem is - it's the "-" in the ID.

Actually, it's nothing to do with that. It's lbp.me returning illegal HTML when your level title contains a double-quote. Tsk.

Now fixed.

Just out of curiosity - it updates automatically every time there's a play or any activity - right? So no need to refresh?

There's currently no way in lbp.me to receive notifications when your stats change, nor can we really hammer lbp.me every few seconds as that would create too much load on their server. The data is grabbed once when you load the page in LBPC, so to update it, you'll have to refresh.

Just so everyone is aware, the code appears to be case sensitive. This means that [lbpmelevelurl] will work, but [LBPMELEVELURL] will not. I'm sure this is an oversight, so if it's not working, that's probably why.

Fixed.

Why does it have to be 'lbpmelevelurl'? Very long, and the more time passes, the more it would be a hassle to change it.

That's my only complaint, not much of a big deal. Great work with this! I almost feel like making a level for the first time in months just to try it

Great feature guys. Muchos kudos.

As for use with the spotlight, this integration feature is unsuitable as it can only be used once per page ... 10 of these on one spotlight page being accessed by half of LBPC would drain the LBP.me server of all life.

To be honest, the current spotlight setup looks similar to the lbpmelevelurl setup anyway, with the added bonus that we can add links to the level badge, the title and to the end of the description. Any other tags that we could use in the spotlight could be copied out by quoting the spotlight post anyway, so any special permissions/code is out of the question.

It's a shame, but it's still a good feature for elsewhere on the site.

Aside from the fact that it makes sense when you see it, it's to make sure that people don't rely on their memory in the case of adding it to existing levels. The last thing we want is reports of it "not working" just to find out someone misspelled it - if we make it long, less people will try to write it down from memory and more will rely on the editor button/copy-paste.

This is explicitly not designed for the spotlight. Live stats is not really what the Spotlight's been about - plus, if Spotlighters tried to use this, if a Creator pulled down their level from LBP.me, it would be gone from the Spotlight listing as well. If we wanted to do something cool for Spotlighters (and we do), we'd have to look at it from a totally different angle.

Wow, I just saw the new additions that CC is working on... Awesome!

You guys are going to love this!

Actually, we only did it to appeal to your ego.

Maybe I should add a special case...

if ($username === 'comphermc&apos $hearts -= 5000;

Uh oh, you're going to show player statistics from lbp.me? Oh no, then everyone will see how few people love me!

But seriously, I just tested this. Very cool, but I had a slight problem. I edited an old post and initially placed the lbpmelevelurl tag at the top, but I didn't like it there. But when I re-edited and put the tag at the bottom, the page didn't update, even with refreshing. The level stats just stay at the top. Do I need to give it some time maybe?

Ah, but perhaps when they see you have fewer hearts than you deserve, they might give you another one. Similarly, when they see comph has way more than he deserves, they might take one away.

The level info always goes at the top of the post, regardless of where you put the tag. I guess it could be changed to allow it to be put anywhere in the post, but I think consistency of layout amongst Showcase posts is probably a good thing, particulary when the Spotlight Crew come through to queue up all the levels.

Bear in mind, you don't have to use it, if you'd prefer to lay out your post in a different way.

Ah, it's more of a meta-tag then, I misunderstood that. I suppose for Level Showcases you're right. Since I don't have any actualy proper levels yet I had to make do with an Object Showcase. But to be honest, I wouldn't really want a lbp.me level stats block in my object showcase anyway, I just wanted to see it work. So uhm... case closed. 2011-01-01 19:47:00

Awesome awesome news. This, coupled with the queueing system, could be the start of a type of web integration that isn't usually seen on consoles and set the groundwork for many games to come. Well done folks.2011-01-01 22:26:00

Mwahahaa this fails to LBL's lbp.me thing!

You just put in the link, NO bb codes, and a fancy window shows up.

LBL - BETTER!

we could argue so much about how LBL doesn't have the spoiler tags that here you can NAME...and also how here you can upload an avatar that's big and LBPC resizes it for me while LBL forces me to make an avatar to it's specifics...but in the end we're not here to say which site is better

just that this feature is awesome and the part 2 that shows our hearts and levels (which LBL doesn't have btw ...but yeah not here to talk about which is better)

anyways hope there's a part 3 to these goodies

I realize this has been in the pipe long before I even joined the site, but I like to think I am all important and stuff. This is exactly what I proposed two weeks ago (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=41944-Level-Showcase-posting-form-should-have-a-LBP.me-URL-field).

Big thanks.

Not working for me... Anyone know why? (don't) see Examples below.

Doesn't work if I type it manually, use the autopopulate from the showcase template, use the button in the advanced editor....

Seems to work, looking at your thread (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=44566-Penguin-Turf-War-DEMO-LBP2-Advert-Level). The LBP server was fubar'd a few minutes ago, which may have affected the ability to scrape it from lbp.me.

(don't) see Examples below.

It only works for first posts of threads in Level Showcase, Cool Levels, or Object Showcase.

Right, makes a bit more sense now.... though I can think of many many reasons why it would be useful to have in other places as well, tutorials, blogs, projects....

Though fair enough if you want to limit it to those places, but having it display nothing doesn't make me think it's invalid BBCode for that area of the forum - typically invalid BBCode either tells you it's not permitted for that area or it displays the rawcode... Displaying nothing looks broked. Just saying.

Admittedly, that that info exists in the OP of this thread should have given it away

Yeah. I forgot what the rationale was for doing it that way. Might just have been technical limitations of vBulletin. Plus we don't want to put too much load on lbp.me, in case they decide to block us.

I would like to request you to look into this, as I can see the benefits of extending it to places such as tutorials to be large.

Probably 'cause you didn't want people spamming their level stats everywhere Most of the places I've mentioned it's not advertising that you are doing, just a fancier link - in a tutorial, a text link is functionally as useful really.

Extending it to cover the OP of threads in other forums is fairly easy.

It depends on the direction everyone wants it extended to. Initially, we only wanted a few select areas, so we could limit the number of bugs we'd have to deal with. Depending on where you guys want that info shown, we could potentially put it in many more places. As Aya said, extending it to other forums is very easy, provided you limit it to the OP of a thread. The problem arises when you want two or more displayed on the same page - something we don't support, due to initial limitations in vBulletin itself. It's probably possible to get it working so that you could display as many levels as you wanted on a single page without issues, but we'd have to completely revamp the way certain things are handled. Even then, I'm not 100% sure it can be done. It'd be tough, to say the least.

EDIT: Now that I've thought about it and spoken with Adrian, I think multiple levels per page would be a bad thing. Too easy to abuse. We'll limit it to one level per page (in the OP only) and just provide a BB Code template you can use if you *really* want to mimic the layout. It'll be the same template the Spotlight Crew will be using for their threads.

Also, it's worth mentioning that we now support cinematic levels (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=42520-LBPCentral-Logo-%28this-is-a-test-ignore%21%29). All types of levels are fully supported now - including Mm Picked levels that already have a predefined type. So mixtures of Vs & Mm Pick and Cinematic & Mm Pick will work fine as well. And this is all recursive - so if your level is a cinematic level, you'll see this change reflected next time you load the page.
