Cutscene Tool Logic Tutorial

Archive: 19 posts

New Thread Link: https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=44403-PSP-Cutscene-Tutorial-(coming-soon)

Are you envious of LBP2's cut scene tool feature and want it on PSP? Well, while goofing around on my moon making nifty contraptions, delaying work for Logic Pack PSP and what not, and I remembered an example of the cut scene tool from LBP2. Then after a half hour or so I got a logic gate-based Cut Scene tool up and running. Now at this point it isn't much. It runs through a magic mouth and can only display 1 set of text. But, it shows a lot of potential.

I've got 2 examples of it up on a levelstitled: cutscene tool. If you want to get on the scoreboard, place a sticker on the right wall once you get to the scoreboard.

In the future I will be making a text-based tutorial on this thread (depending on how many people demand it), and no matter what I'll be making a level-based tutorial for it.

Please let me know what you think below!

Also, I found a really great way to record PSP games, and I made a pretty good looking video below. Please no grief of no cool titles and such, it's my 1st individual Youtube production

Great work Ricky! Here is a tip for you: when playing first speech bubble, trigger second one. When player will close the bubble, camera returns to player and then the second bubble activates. Unfortunately, when camera returns to player, he can move and run away from the sensor (like in your level). BUT this method is very useful when player is in box (I want to use this method in prologue of our project), so you can create some sort of film. In such way you can make a sequence of cutscenes. (Unfortunately, speech bubbles can't zoom in/out)
And you should try (I didn't try yet) to put camera in a place where sensor switch is placed and zoom out. That can help in giving less time for player to move and deactivate speech bubble.
I plan to use one-speech-bubble method when you enter the level and it shows you the entire level.

Lol thats exactly how I wanted to do this...
EDIT:I meant cutscene making, not how to make them...
Yeah, I suck at choosing words

a new era in little big planet for play station portable?
I might try and put together a crudely designed level with cut scenes like that.

UPDATE: Hey, I updated the cut scene level, and now there are two examples. I thought up an entirely new logic gate that can either be dissolve or piston based to work. It can be used to get both pistons to retract at the same time to get the cutscene to go diagonally, and then the pistons work individually, it's pretty cool. So example 2 goes 1. zoom in on sackboy. 2. moves diagonal to view another sackboy on a cliff (normally out of view). 3. Moves right to a 3rd sackboy. Definitely worth seeing, it also works much better than the 1st.

Thanks for your opinions guys!

Izhuk- I had at first thought of using multiple mouths, but like you said the camera goes back to you when you exit out, and I personally thought that made it not worth it. However, you're box idea sounds like it would work. Maybe for out project we could do something like sackboy jumps in the box, and then a tv thin layer goes down to restrict his movement entirely. I'll get working on a level that displays all forms of possible cutscenes. Thanks for your ideas.

Jimmy- A new era indeed, but not just from this. I guess you could say a new era in LBP is upon us if you count the new year, homemade cut scene tools, no future DLC, AND Cory's objects placed on sackboy glitch. Together these could change LBP almost as much as the 3rd layer glitch and material gas.

Keep the cutscene ideas coming! Maybe in the near future we'll be able to think up enough ways to simulate cut scenes in every way LBP2 has them!

Hey Ricky
sooo, Ive read your thread, but haven't unfortunately played LBP PSP since I bought the ps3 version.......first off, WOW what a blast from the past omg, brings back memories of struggling with just basic logic, and the joy of discovering all the new features in the ps3 version. I truly can't remember a lot of the features on the PSP version, were there no cameras? Or was it just no cut scenes...yeah thats it......so you have rigged sensors to 'trip' the cameras into action right? (sorry, a little confused, bit early in the morning (after a late night on LBP lol)
Keep up the good work, and GREAT video quality, how you getting on with the tutorial? Would like to see what you did in create mode.
Shade.

Hey thanks a lot man! Yes, there are cameras in PSP, but sackboy has to constantly stay in view or it doesn't work. I decided to use a magic mouth so I could constantly zoom in, then I used invisi material and invisible pistons rigged with delayed perma switches. I'm working on a tutorial and I'll make a PS3 and PSP version for you and everyone else on the other side. I'll make another link on the PS3 side as well once I release the tutorial on PS3. I was also surprised with the video quality. I used PSP component cables to my 720 HDTV, and I used a 480 recorder stacked on a laundry bin on my couch to steady it! . Thanks a lot for the feedback I'm going to go play your level now.2011-01-05 23:45:00

Pretty good stuff you got there! Chaining the magic mouth scene things together would make for a better, longer cutscene.2011-01-07 01:12:00

What do you mean chaining? Just so you know (not in rude way, just factual) through my method and new logic gate I invented the cutscenes are capable of being set to any time (delay per scene or time for moving scenes), can move up, down, left, right, diagonally, stop, and go to a same position more than once. I can explain everything more once I get my tutorial level out. So far I've got the 2 example cutscenes (with another different version coming, the one suggested my izhuk), a brief intro drawn out, and all the logic gates made. I am expecting it to be done in 7-11 days or so.2011-01-08 04:51:00

yeah I'm going to, it's just that I've been pretty wrapped up in LBP2 and homework right now and dont have a lot of time. I'm making a tutorial level of it, and I'm at 70% ish right now. By the way I made a new thread in the tutorials section for it2011-02-17 23:40:00

I never looked at this before. This is similar to an idea a had a while ago, though I wasn't making a level. I never looked into making it.

I like this idea.

Lol I decided to click on this thread after seeing it up for awhile and whatdoyaknow? I was mentioned haha. (I just get this tingly feeling everyone says my name...username.) Yeah umm Trecoox, this thread was completely about "Cutscene Tool Logic" and not at all my version of the creatinator. Check out the level showcase thread for my PSP Creatinator and double check where you're posting random things too

I'm really liking this idea Ricky and am planning on using it, or something like it in my next level.

Great job man!

Great job man!

Thanks man! I'm (obviously) running late on releasing, and haven't worked on it in a few weeks. Bad brew of school, sports, and too much LBP2 . If you want it in your level before I can release it just PM me and I'll fill you in on it, and maybe you can demo what I have in the level so far.

^Same for anyone else who wants to use it before I can release

If you could PM me before I leave tomorrow that would be great (before around 12:00 NOON Central Time. I'll try to showcase your cutscene in one of my levels too.
