ARABESK Level Project [WIP]

Archive: 58 posts

http://images.gamekult.com/blog/imgdb/000/000/540/508_2.png

I never reallly shared about or advertised my levels before actually publishing them, but let's try with this one!
No epic, complex, or game recreation project here, it's just a regular LBP level, the first one I will make when LBP2 will be out! The beta and LBP2 coming really soon, it really motivates me to finally work on this level that was meant to be done in LBP1 originally.... *sigh* lazyness...

http://images.gamekult.com/blog/imgdb/000/000/540/509_2.jpg

In few words, this level will features :

Cinematic cutscenes (during the playthrough or in an separate intro level)
Action packed and fun gameplay I hope
My first Boss fight
Sackbots characters and custom made and animated NPC/animals
Detailled and "realistic" arabian settings and architectural elements

http://images.gamekult.com/blog/imgdb/000/000/540/510_2.jpg

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Work in progress...
This is just an early stage presentation, so many things might change, but I'm only sharing what I have in mind at the moment, and what I created and tested so far. But let's say that , thanks to the "easy-to-use" new tools and logic , this will be my most long and advanced level.
I'll update the thread when I have new things in progress.

• UPDATE : Final sackbots characters

Custom Music / Help wanted
Update : No more help needed

If you have any comment, advice, ideas, feel free to post!

Thanks for reading

This looks extremely epic and I'm looking forward to it! I would help with the music, but I've pretty much got my hands full with about 5 or 6 projects. D; Not sure if I can handle making music for that many projects. So I hope you find someone for that. :32010-12-30 20:59:00

Thanks for the kind comments guys... I'm under pressure now lol

I made some little testing in create mode, and I'm already doubting of what I want to do... :
- mainly because of thermo problem : few scenery parts, 3 characters and 3 sackbot, and the level is almost full... ! It's because of my scenery shapes that are a little complex...
- and because I wanted to use a sackbot as the main player, but after some testing, it's seems complicated to make everything works the way I want (cameras/player sensor...)

So, I'm thinking of maybe only making a movie level with this (with maybe a simple mini-game linked to it)...
What do you think? Would it be dissapointing if it's not a gameplay level?

Apart from that, here the 3 first sackbots characters
(just early drafts as I don't know what costumes will be getting in LBP2 yet)

http://images.gamekult.com/blog/imgdb/000/000/541/019_3.png

And I also made a quick few seconds cinematic, to try something...and because I was bored
The evil Sultan is preparing something.... duhduhduh

Hum yes...thanks! :/

Well, I need to simplify things then, because of the thermo :
Maybe I'll make an intro movie level, which will be linked to the regular gameplay level (but without cinematics in this one)

After that, I still have that problem with the playable sackbot : the first problem is that when you remotecontrol a sackbot with the DCS, it's not really considered as a player (normal cameras, sensor...) and you can't use the grappling hook...
Why doesn't Mm allow the sackbot to be completely considered as the player..? I don't think it would be that complex to make.

Or I just make it playable normally, by 1 to 4 players, dressed in zombies, fairy, and robots....
Arf, I just wanted a very coherent theme...

I love the idea of a purely cinematic level linked to a minigame, and then you could have a few gameplay levels thrown into the mix!2011-01-02 02:47:00

If you take a thick piece of holo, make it invisible, and place the transmitting controlinator (set to invisible in play mode) on the holo piece, you can use normal game cameras and collect point bubbles and such. Make the holo piece follow the sackbot through layers and 100% acceleration and players won't be able to tell the difference (usually). I dunno how to fix the grappling hook problem though. I understand why they made it that way, but the game should be able to recognize if a sackbot is being controlled by a player, in which case swimming, and all unusable powerups should become available.

I'd honestly be a bit disappointed if you didn't make this a playable level. However, if you really can't and keep the amazing visual style that I've seen so far, a movie would be the next best thing.

Eh thanks very much Aeroforce, i just tested it out and it seems to be the perfect way to do it!
Though finding the death and respawn system seems complex...as sometimes, the sackboy doesnt die when the sackbot do... :/

Anyway I have time to test that more, if I choose to keep the playable sackbot!

For spawning, I use a selector + tag sensors and emitters on the checkpoints. Your sackperson will never actually die, (unless you put a destroy switch on the holo piece) but you can remove points with a point giver if you really want to.

If you need help with the spawning, I can rip the microchip out of my socketbot and give it to you if you want.

I expected to see a project based on the old tv show Murder, she wrote (called Arabesque where I live), and then I saw your profile picture and all this... Wow! This looks really excellent. I'm not usually into arabian-themed level (that Iznogoud movie probably disgusted me) but your project looks very studied and neat. I love what you've done with the Music Sequencer. Mm can be proud of their tool, and you can be proud of you.

By the way, did you use the Funny Head Size option to make your characters? Anyway, they really look good this way.

Oh maybe it is not clear enough, but I didn't create those music ! (I wish...) .
They are just "real" examples of what I would like to have in the level... so I'm searching for someone talented who could help me

And yes I used the funny head size, to make them look a little less "kiddy"!

Oops, my bad! I should've read what you wrote thoroughly. Well at least I love the music you chose. The only thing I could do is making a music in LBP but as long as there's a video with someone, playing it on the piano. I couldn't make it in the game without a video, so I won't probably be very useful :/

Some new little infos :

Characters
Here's the final characters I'm gonna use in the level in a way or another... (yes, I also gave them names )

http://images.gamekult.com/blog/imgdb/000/000/548/897_3.jpg

Little storyline and biographies coming soon....

Gameplay

Finding the gameplay and the layout of the level scares me a little, but I have some few ideas I need to test.

Anyway, I made up my mind and I decided to use a sackbot as the main gameplay character (Asmar, the Hero), as I wanted something cohesive.
He will just act like a normal sackboy (jump, swing, grab...) and as it's possible, I also added a custom "flamy sword attack", really simple, L2 attack on the left / R2 attack on the right.
Nothing revolutionnary, but I think it will add some action to the gameplay, and I also think the fire effect looks cool!

Thanks Comph, your logic tips were very helpfull, I might bother you again..lol

Another thing I had completely forgot till now, and that is very frustrating,
it's how the central part of the MGS background changed in LBP2 :
It's completely dark and blurry now...
I was very happy to use that part when I started this in LBP1 cause it was woking great, but now no more...

I took some pictures few time ago, to see the differences :

LBP1 / Day- Night
http://images.gamekult.com/blog/imgdb/000/000/549/208_2.jpg http://images.gamekult.com/blog/imgdb/000/000/549/209_2.jpg

I don't really understand why they change it like that, we can't say retro compatbility for this...

Oh well, there's nothing I can do about it,... just my little complaint of the day

Sorry double post Some little news (for people who care...lol)

Custom Music : no need for help anymore ;p

Comishguy67 and Hilightnotes were kind enough to create 2 great musics for the level!
I'm really thankfull for this, and I love what they have done!

? Comishguy created a really nice, calm and smooth music piece, with a kind of modern twist to it,
that will fit perfectly in one of the section of the level.

? Hilightnotes created a great oriental tune, called "Arabian colourings", with some epic drums beats,
and this will be the main music theme of the level(s)
You can listen to it by checking his showcase level : http://lbp.me/v/x65q26

Cinematc intro :

I'm working on it at the moment, and it will be quite simple sadly (thermo issue...again)

http://images.gamekult.com/blog/imgdb/000/000/552/758_1.gif

I choose to use voice recording, and asked Claptonfan to tell the "narrator" lines.
Even if the quality is not the best, hope people will like it, as Clapton has a perfect voice for this!
Thanks very much to him!

Daj kindly gave me the opportunity to take this level for an early-stage test drive some weeks ago, and last night I got to see the full intro movie.

My verdict?

If you only play one level this year, make it Arabesk, because this level is not just looking "good"....it's looking like potentially the most awesome level ever created by anyone, anywhere, anytime. And I mean that with the deepest sincerity.

Though I'm starting to feel it was maybe a mistake to show "too much"... cause maybe the cinematic will be good, but the level itself will suck... >_> lol

I might give this a try later on when it's done. I'm assuming that the genre's going to be either platforming or hack-and-slash, right?

Anyways, you said earlier that L2 and R2 will cause the main character to attack left or right, right? Well, what if the character could also thrust upwards or downwards? If you'd like, I could send you some logic (may come with a piece of invisible holographic material that's supposed to follow the player around) that you could optionally use to allow the character to swing his sword with just the press of a single button, or even to aim in any direction with the R-stick.

Thanks you, yes it's gonna be more about regular platforming globally... So I don't want to make it too complicated :
As I choose to use a sackbot as the main playable character, for a more cohesive theme, I added the left/right attack just as a little extra that will allow some action parts... but it's not the main gameplay element though.

Thanks for your suggestion anyway, that's kind
