Archive: 24 posts

Hi everyone! I just got a new laptop for christmas. It is a Dell Inspiron Mini. I dont want this laptop to be uber-virused like my other computers so can you ppl give me some tips on how to not get viruses on my computer. I have MacAfe viruse protection for 15 months but i know that those virus protection programs dont keep out every virus......
P.S.
Since i got a laptop i will probably be going on LBPC alot more now because i used to use my PS3 browser.

Stay offline and never use any external devices or media.

That's not enough.

Take it outside and smash it with a hammer. Then blow it up and scatter the pieces in the ocean. Only then are you ready for step 2.

Be careful on the internet. Stay on websites you know and trust, don't follow any unknown links, and never download anything unless you're sure it won't contain any viruses. You'll still need an anti-virus program of some sort, but the majority of viruses can be easily avoided just by being careful.

Get "Avast" its a free anti-virus program, pretty good, since they make the top notch charged-for anti-viruses for big companies, they make the older still really good versions for free to the public.

Get pop-up blockers, and all that, and just stay within non-suspicious sites.

If you're poor and lazy (like many), I'd stick with Leon's idea and go with Avast.

If you've got money and can tolerate long installations, get Norton Anti-Virus. It cleans up a bad computer, and keeps a good computer clean. That, and, being a veteran computer-crasher, every indirect attempt I've made so far to crash the family labtop has been averted thanks to Norton.

Yeah, I'd go for Avast too. I had AVG, the other version on my laptop before and it managed to completely screw itself over and become completely redundant and wouldnt work, and i was unable to replace it. Oh, i was cheesed off.... had to restore it back to it's factory settings. But since i've had Avast, my laptops been fine.

Either that, or get Norton if you can afford it.

The biggest security threat to a laptop is the end-user letting viruses onto the machine - usually in the form of Trojans (software that contains hidden viruses);

So given that YOU will be the most likely cause of infection (downloading untrusted/unverified content) - the answer is "Be More Carefull!"

DO NOT GET NORTON. My family has Norton and we've had several computer-breaking viruses. Even the guy that saved the computer from these viruses (a trained professional) agreed that Norton is a total waste of money.

I have Avast on my laptop and it's great, and Malwarebytes is good too. They're both free as well, unlike Norton.

Yeh Norton's pretty ****, it constantly mistakes clean files for viruses, stopping certain programs from running properly, and deleting files when extracting with WinRar. Avast all the way.

Common Sense 2011 works like a charm for me.

of course, you'll always need something to fall back on when that fails...

McAffee came with my new laptop free of charge for a few months. When it expired I recently googled around a bit and ended up with Microsoft Security Essentials and common sense. It's so user friendly compared to all the other anti-virus progs I've had before, even nod32. And it's FREE!2010-12-29 23:16:00

This guy, he speaks the truth. I have Norton and my computer is so slow! And it's not what you think, my internet connection is immaculate. And... Guess what, just did a full scan with Norton, no threats detected.

Conclusion: Avoid Norton.

Well, for my family, it works fine. No problems here. :

That, and... I somehow still managed to crash the computer with Avast installed... the last 3-4 times. Hence why my family finally opted out to get some fancy software.

But whatev. If it works with him, then that's fine with me.

I still haven't had any problems with Avast, its been a good virus blocker. It updates frequently, it lets you know when something's up, but most importantly- I can set the language to Pirate Talk.

But just be smart about your browsing, and you should do pretty well. Eventually everyone gets a virus, but with safe browsing that shouldn't happen too often.

Go with Avast, it's in the Google pack, then try to go to "Nasty" sites to see if it works correctly 2010-12-30 07:33:00

Give it some vitamin c to improve it's immune system?

Well I use AVG because its free I think I've had 3 viruses but that's only because i downloaded some things with viruses on but AVG seemed to deal with them pretty well once I had them so it worthwhile trying it out.
