So, where do YOUR ideas come from?

Archive: 7 posts

A) How do these ideas come to your mind? Do you sit and meditate about LBP? Do you play games for inspiration? Do you ask other people for suggestions? How do you do it?!

B) Do you write them down? Doodle them? Keep 'em in your mind?

As for me...
A) My ideas come from when I'm driving for 2 hours...or when I'm in a BOOORIIING college class (Microeconomy...BLECK!!).

B) I have many written in a Notepad... Not to mention the back of my notebook has a lot of sketches and doodles! ;D

A) Well, for the History level I've thought up of (see the topic labeled Very Big LBP Idea), it came after I saw someone on Gamefaqs come up with an idea that was related to rock, and had segments that would be a sort of play on the title of a song (example, a bolt of lightning = Ride the Lightning by Metallica). So I figured, I'd make a themed sort of level, so I came up with the History of Man level.

The others were just ideas for remakes or stuff that recently came to my mind, like Okami (beautiful Japanese art)

B) I actually think about these all in my mind first, then I write them down. I honestly dont know how I would draw them out, so I'm waiting to play throught the single player in LBP for ideas on how to make it work.

Depends on how I feel. If I'm bored, I look at things as though I was 3 inches tall. Some things make sense and some things don't. If I'm feeling nostalgic, I think pull ideas from whatever I'm being nostalgic about.

I don't write them down.

My job requires me to observe the human condition for hours at a time...

this provides me with inspiration and time to think of levels that would cause a emotional response good or bad...

combine this with 30 years of movies, cartoons, music, t.v...

and you have the basis for my level creation...

I just purchased a small sketch book to record and outline my ideas...

Holy crap...I just thought of an awesome LBPC themed level...WOW!...it will only be kool to us...off to sketch...

They usually come from other sources, such as books, short stories (whether it's ones I have read or written myself), movies, tv shows. There is almost always an inspiration for my level ideas, so while the gameplay mechanics may be original enough, the inspiration for the level as a whole is rarely completely original.

I rarely consciously think of level ideas, they usually just come to me or I'll see something and think, "Hey that could be a great level for LBP!"

I haven't started sketching out my levels yet, though I do have some parts of my Lord of the Rings level thought out already. I must start sketching soon though, because I don't want to be influenced too strongly by the levels that are in the game...

Aside: Hey Noonian, what do ya do? "Observing the human condition" sounds like Psychiatry or Medicine... close?

Things just pop into my head, I'm weird like that.. Say I was already thinking of a catapult, I'll end up building a whole level around that, just from that 1 item lol. All in my head...And then I'll try to draw it2008-08-06 13:04:00
