The "I wish this material was in it" thread

Archive: 70 posts

Well I don't have the game yet so I can't really decide on all of the materials I wish were in it but I'd like to see a kind of muck material that slowed you down (got the idea from MSR) and a flexible material that bends under pressure.

What about you guys?

I think they took ice out due to gameplay complications. Sand would be cool, and reflective materials. Maybe a mirror!

i dont understand how it hurt the gameplay, i know glass replaced it, but no one said we couldnt have both!

Ice froze you but you could still move around I think. It was a danger like fire but it may have created some glitches and exploits.

a) Crystal clear glass... I could really use this something fierce.. the glass that's default in the game works sometimes, but a lot of times it's not transparent "enough"

b) White Felt... Was playing around on a blank level and was making a football field and had no white felt to go with the green.. cotton beige definitely did not work, and I hated wasting sticker space for the white coloring... Of course, I threw that level away after seeing a few football field ones.

c) Glossy Silver metal. (most of the other colors I can get through stickers but I can't make a gloss-silver (like the top of glass salt-shakers)).

that might be a little too graphic for lbp,

how bout a material that, when activated like dissolving matrerial, will crumble into rubble, but wont dissapear, and it could be tweaked to change the density of the rubble, and the formations it cracks in... wait, that would be awesome! and that was off the top of my head!

How about... plastic?

It's clear (sort of like class), and you won't slip around too much on it either.... not only that, stickers show up clearly on it =P

Stick it in with another idea and it should be good. If you really wanted to you could do it with switches but it would take a lot of effort. I wouldn't want them to add so much to the game as to make it easy to create anything.

This is what i wrote in the questions for Alex Evans

My materials i would like to see would be Water (or more to the point LIQUIDS) which is an obvious one, sand could be fun, jelly (that would wobble), cloth also that could be grabbed and used as a bridge to walk across - Think Armadillo Run if anyone has played that (loved it)

I used to love playing Armadillo Run and LBP reminds me of Armadillo Run/LineRider
For those of you that have never played Armadillo Run then THIS IT IT VVVVVV

i want a better slippery surface... glass sucks, if you put a glass ramp, and glass block, for some reason theres little specs the get stuck... it's annoying... we need a matieral that is slippery and good for building... not just decorative...2008-11-05 23:17:00

Gelatin.

Since water physics are extremely complicated, why not have gelatin? Works just like water (you can swim around in it), but it sort of moves around like any other object with physics.

that's not the glass, it's the fact that even a circle is made up of many sides (20 if you use the default circle tool). A ramp, for instance, is made up of many flat sides. You can smooth it out by adding more.

cloth, felt etc... SOmething that can be grabbed onto by the player (like sponge) but is very flexible, it would bend on its own when yo grab it. It would be very helpful.2008-11-06 00:49:00

it makes the room all foggy, and when you touch it... well... that's the not-fun part, hehe.

I don't know if it is in as I haven't finished all the story levels yet, but I would love to have a magnetic material. It could be attracted to (and attract) metallic materials, but would be repelled by other magnetic materials. The size of the object itself would determine how magnetic it is 2008-11-06 20:09:00

This isn't so much a different material as just a different approach.. I wish instead of using dissolve material it just had a "dissolve tool" where you could designate any material to dissolve.2008-11-06 20:12:00

Yes, sometimes you don't want people to be able to grab things you want to dissolve, or you want them to have a specific texture...

It looks so fun to bounce around on. I was so dissapointed when I learned it was just an object, not a material...

And I also wish we had fabric that we could run under like at GDC.

Id like some sort of magnetic material that sackboy can be 'attracted' to, or when set to inverted, repel against.2008-11-09 18:57:00

Here are some ideas:

Fur - Very Light Material, grabbable, slightly heavier than a pink floaty, so it gently floats to the ground if falling. The fur would move and bounce as its pulled around in the game world.

For stickers, more solid color options. A circle gradient. No black edges on stickers. Sometimes you can't get a sticker big enough, and you put another sticker on to blend it in, but it leaves behind a black line border that kind of ruins it.

As mentioned above:

Plastic - Basic Light Material, like cardboard, except it would be glossier and sound more "plasticky" when things collided with it

Transparent glass would also be welcome, and glass panes without the wobbly faces, too. Sometimes I'd just rather have smooth glass with a nice reflection, like some of the metal textures.

Sand would be nice, though making it deformable would probably require a major update to the game engine. Even without it deforming, a nice sand burst particle effect would be nice when your sackboy or any other object moves over it.

Setting materials to be breakable upon a specified amount of force would be great, too, as we know the functionality exists since explosions can blow up some materials.

Lead, a ridiculously heavy material, a small square on a small grid weighs the same as a block of stone 3 times it's size, while the heaviest, it'll look kinda ugly at times.2008-12-15 18:20:00

I forget where i heard this but sand can be created by useing the stone tool and cloning it and making it tiny. I really wish there was a kind of frosted glass material. It would look very nice with some of my levels. Good for christmas too.2008-12-18 22:53:00

i like all of those materials, but one thing they need to add is the ability to make the string an active object, so the string does not go through things but interacts with them, such as making pullies or other stuff like that and including an intire set of that kind of object, like chain, string, and a bunch of other stuff.

Cheers!

How about new varieties of Dark Matter that have effects on gravity.
A brand of the special Dark Matter, for example will have vertical gravity strong enough to lift very light materials... The range of the gravitational pull could be something like double the length/width of used Dark Matter. Materials secured to heavier materials wouldn't be affected. Another brand of the material would have the same effect, only horizontally. A third type would effect both.

Surrounding yourself in enough of this special Dark Matter to pull your sack, and you'll float. Fun stuff. How about materials with reverse gravity?

Run with it, Mm.

New types of dissolve material that dissolve differently would be cool, too.
Dissolve to rubble, twinkle away, turn into a bunch of bubbles, and float off...

...Bouncy materials, and swimming-type have already been mentioned a few times... They're awesome, too.

Realistically though, I just want more futuristic looking metals, smooth glass, and maybe some bricks. More polystyrene, too. That section is empty.

Well, since people seem to be against the idea of being able to edit material properties a-la cow glitch, I have a new one I would absolutely need. "Light" Dissolve material. The current Dissolve material is much too heavy, it would be really useful to have Dissolve material that weighs as little as cardboard.2008-12-22 15:00:00

White Floaty - This material acts like the orange(?) stuff, but it's path of ascension cannot be disturbed unless it hits a ceiling.
Switching-Existance - This material may change from solid to walk-throughable with the touch of a button, and back again, unlike Dissolve.

You could make the powder yourself, just a load of small objects, material depends on how you want it to behave. It will probaply wreak havoc on your thermometer though..

I know many people have mentioned water before but instead of it being either a danger/ area where sackboy can swim they could make it both. If they put in a tweaking menu for it then you would be able to set is as dangerous/ safe and if you set it as dangerous there would be a tweakable air limit. Also they could maybe make options for how solid/ liquid it is.

*01philip01* what he meant was what people could use it for would be too graphic (mature) for LBP.
