No one can find you to put you in your rightful place, climb to the top of the tree and complete the festive decorations. Seems like a simple enough task - and maybe it is - or maybe it's not. This level looked very good. The 3d wood plank floor with all the presents looked amazing. Most of the platforming was pretty good. The big problem that i had was the boss. I played 4 times and each time there was some kind of problem. One time i kept grabbing the yellow stars and nothing ever happened. Then one time he never dropped the yellow stars. The one time i beat the boss and he was trying to escape, i killed him and it didn't remove the gas. Please fix these problems and i will try again. Would you mind giving feedback on my Fall of the Dark Queen level. | 2010-12-26 05:45:00 Author: Xx_Mr_Orange_xX Posts: 115 |
Ok first of all, that level badge is one of my favourite in LBP . And the Christmas music was also awesome. Sometimes I did find the level a bit confusing, but i found my way eventually, so its not that big of a deal. Like Xx_Mr_Orange_xX I also had a problem with the boss at the end, but I am not really sure what it was. I beat it but there was nowhere to go after. Other than the boss bug the level is well done . Please F4F this ------> https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=42030-Tomb-of-the-Pharaoh | 2010-12-26 07:02:00 Author: sanji101 Posts: 35 |
I did a quick fix for it dropping yellow stars - but I am reworking it a bit - I never seemed to manage to make the starfish bring down the gas - let alone not take it away - but will check it out too, or at least add a backup timer. I guess I kinda expected direction-wise that the level description kinda said it and the R1 was enough otherwise - where did you find was not clear enough? | 2010-12-26 17:35:00 Author: Unknown User |
Hi Troll_sb!! so far i'm Enjoying ur level a lot!! but i'm kinda stuck after beating the star boss too. after I pop the "lil run away" guy, I don't know how to get out of the dark realm looking place. i run to the left and it gasses me, if i run to the right it stops me like an invisible wall.. I don't wana post feedback just yet becoz i wana finish the whole level 1st, I reali wana finish it. | 2010-12-29 08:42:00 Author: Brixx101 Posts: 277 |
The little guy is "meant to remove the gas - I have to look into it - I just have been flat out with work - should make the necessary revisions tonight | 2010-12-29 09:24:00 Author: Unknown User |
These be my thoughts on your level: I got a really cool Toy Story vibe from the whole thing which is, needless to say, a good thing. I thought your custom music was super cool! I was confused a few times as to where the platforms were behind the pine needles, but was able to figure it out without too much trouble. I also think the way the boss fight with the star sneaks up on you is pretty classy, it caught me totally by surprise. That's where my only real trouble lies. I wasn't able to figure out exactly what to do. If I missed something message me and I'll try again. Really cool design and AWESOME custom music work! :star::star::star::star: | 2010-12-30 22:08:00 Author: skumchunk Posts: 57 |
I was unsure if I should have some instruction, my husband said nah they'll figure it out... :S Might have to stick in an army man on timer if you dont start defeating it after a little while. But basically - front layer, shoot it five times, it drops a pulsing power star - grab it. Big star should then lose a light - and spout of some cheesy star pun smack talk. Repeat, 5 times. Then the next part should be clear | 2010-12-31 00:34:00 Author: Unknown User |
Hi, returning F4F. Positives Trapped soldiers at the beginning - this was my favorite part. Liked the nails in the floorboards and use of feathers on the tree. Arrows on score bubbles to direct player were a good idea. Liked the effect when reaching the top of the tree. Negatives The race starting point looked a bit crammed in. After completing the boss fight I was unable to reach the scoreboard as nothing happened. This was the case both times I played, so either something is triggering sporadically or not at all. Overall I thought the concept was great and the artwork pretty good. :star::star::star::star: | 2011-01-02 16:19:00 Author: Destiny_Waits Posts: 49 |
Witt he scoreboard - did you just fall off left from the final tree? if you jump right, you can explore the room, but you have to jump back up on plant base to hit the score board. Or do you mean that once the big star dropped the smallr one didnt appear? | 2011-01-02 23:22:00 Author: Unknown User |
Those pics look awesome, the level looks alot of fun, ill check this soon next time im on LBP ^___^. | 2011-01-03 20:33:00 Author: Bloo_boy Posts: 1019 |

Or do you mean that once the big star dropped the smallr one didnt appear? The small star appeared but after defeating it nothing happened, I couldn't go anywhere other than to the left or right which were blocked by gas. | 2011-01-03 23:32:00 Author: Destiny_Waits Posts: 49 |
Well left like the little guy wants to go initially is to the exit back to the platform on which you cam or is the gas just after the checkpoint on the way back not vanishing? I was sure I fixed that | 2011-01-04 00:35:00 Author: Unknown User |
Well left like the little guy wants to go initially is to the exit back to the platform on which you cam or is the gas just after the checkpoint on the way back not vanishing? I was sure I fixed that yes no problems getting back to the platform, I went back to it a few times as I thought that was the case, but it didn't activate for me | 2011-01-04 00:50:00 Author: Destiny_Waits Posts: 49 |
takes a few seconds and is require all - perhaps I should add a light and a thing that says - it takes about as long as the first one does... | 2011-01-04 00:52:00 Author: Unknown User |
The level was great, I really loved the feeling of being in that huge house, the scenery is awesome, thats one of the best 3D ive ever seen. The tree was awesome, idk if you played Banjo Kazooie, but this reminded me of that a little, thats a good thing. I Loved how you decorated the tree, it really felt like a christmas tree, it was a little short but with everything the level had I understand that, especially all awesome decorations. I liked the boss, the story was creative and cool I really liked it. The star game a hard time at first but then I got the hang of it ^___^ I gave the level 5 stars cause it really deserves 5 stars I can imagine how hard you worked on this, and Brilliant and a Heart =). Great level, if your planning on LBP2 maybe you should join the Banjo Project, if your familiar with that, this level really took me back to my childhood >_< But great job =) Awesome level | 2011-01-04 16:43:00 Author: Bloo_boy Posts: 1019 |
Glad you enjoyed it - was about 2.5 weeks full time including doing music ( now much easier I have my methods) I never played banjo - I just played some other tree climbing levels and thought they are rubbish trees, i'll make a better tree - and then the whole thing got kinda outta hand It is as short as it is - mostly because I felt climbing the tree got old fast - even with the traps and obstacles - hence the pulley - easy to add more I spose. I had about 2 bars of thermo left before I went nuts with the tiny lights in the minature room - but they are easily scaled back - all they do is make it lag like *** really. If you have anything you think may work a a trap in the tree feel free to suggest and I can move up the pulley branch - I think... | 2011-01-04 16:50:00 Author: Unknown User |
Hi Trol_sub. Nice game! Real great use of the 3d, made me laugh, the noises from the grunty soldiers too.Great original music too! Slightly confusing to where to go, but not an issue, as it means you feel like you are working it out for your self rather than lots of hints and arrows everywhere. My only problem was the boss (GREAT boss scene, and some funny dialog BTW) but I killed it, and then killed the 'LITTLE' star, but couldn't go anywhere, so it would seem the bug is still happening If you want me to take a look and offer suggestions, feel free to add me 'shade_seeker'. Great game, shame I couldn't get to the score board. Sorry for regurgitating what has already been said, but hey, very little new to add. If you could F4F my level 'House of the flying diggers' I'd appreciate it. Shade. | 2011-01-04 21:06:00 Author: Shade_seeker Posts: 328 |
Okay - gas issue fixed again - i don't see how it can fail now (fingers crossed) ( i did finally get the bug when i played a few times before i fixed it) Platform wait time after boss greatly reduced. Trigger method for power star grabs should now also be more reliable as apparently the little paint balls were going through one wall and into the next .... I will play your level very soon and hope I have time to do write up before i can go get my car. | 2011-01-05 04:38:00 Author: Unknown User |
OK, let's break this down. Visuals - Fantastic. Your 3D room, presents, et. al. were amazing! Wish I could do anything half as good as that. Loved your stickering, and your decoration-ing, and...well, everything about the level. Absolutely five stars, looks-wise. Concept - This was...interesting. I went into the level expecting a fun, bright, Christmasy-level. I came out of the level having played a fun, strange, and downright terrifying level. Don't get me wrong, that's not a bad thing. It was unique, but man I felt like such a jerk after killing the star. I said to the friend I was playing with the I really should just give up on the horror-themed level I'm making, because nothing will be able to top this one. Hahaha. Platforming - Enjoyable, but it was hard to see exactly where to jump a lot of the times on the tree. Some of the traps were rather devious, too! I did enjoy stacking the toy soldiers to get onto the tree, though. Boss - I constantly felt myself not being able to tell if I was hitting the boss with my Paintinator or not. Also, when he throws the stars at you, there isn't really much of an indication that you're supposed to grab them. I found out by dumb luck. Speaking of the boss, the characterization was brilliant. I was laughing at some of the awful puns it was spouting. It really added to the mood whiplash this whole level gives you. And then I was back to not-laughing because I felt like such a jerk when I killed it. Overall, an enjoyable level, but not really to my tastes, and some of the platforming and boss sections are a bit too unintuitive or tricky for my liking. Thanks for the feedback - there should be a little soldier dude who tells you to grab the power stars if you don't start doing it after a few goes, he also tells you to be in the front layer to shoot. The bosses attacks alternate between the front 2 layers, so with switching layers you can avoid being hit, making it single layer would save confusion, but it would also make it a bit tougher - I could slow down his electric paint ball spin speed and frequency so there is some gaps - hmmm not sure - open to suggestions. I apologise killing a pathetic little usurping star made you feel like a jerk, need to be an egocentric angel who believes it's their rightful place I suppose. I don't have the thermo to make an alternative happy ending where you an share the tree else that may have worked. My aim was to have the player annoyed at the boss and his insults - so then hen the little star who is behind it is pathetic and whingy you'd be like will you just shut up! I toss up between moving some of the feather decorations to make next branches easier to see, and keeping a more random less-platformy look, I tried to make it so that missed jumps were not too punishing - and you can just easily try again - were there any in particular took more than a second go? the first jump up on I did put an invisible platform in line with the feather decoration to make it an easier jump, but you still have to be up a layer - I might go in and make that layer a little higher so there is a wider range you can make the jump from. | 2011-01-07 15:05:00 Author: Unknown User |
No, I wouldn't say that any took more than a second go. Once I could see where to go next it wasn't too bad going up the tree. I think that if I were playing it alone it would have been a bit better since the camera would have been zoomed in more. I'll have to test that out this weekend and get back to you on that. I don't remember the soldier during the boss fight at all. Either something glitched or I just wasn't doing it right - or playing with a friend may have mixed it up a bit. Again, I'll do a solo run and report my findings in this thread. I forgot to mention the custom music in the initial review - very well done. Added to the atmosphere (which was weird and wonderful). My only question is about the bells chiming Joy To The World at the beginning - is the music set to play after a certain switch is passed? I kept hearing the first eight notes again and again when dragging the soldiers, and it took it a few goes before it continued with more of the song. Was that by design? | 2011-01-07 18:04:00 Author: The Doctor Posts: 18 |
The soldier appears if you haven't managed to figure to grab a yellow star after about a minute, I have various timed hints - for those who are getting stuck to ideally save people rage quitting. I guess it may fail to emit if I have it a bit too low so the player can be in the way..... must check. The music should just play constantly with a 15 sec gap before repeating- the logic is far away but the set of speakers is in the box you get on top of after the bear if you go further away from it you wont hear it anymore - so maybe it was timing .... I had never heard it get stuck before I will go have a listen in case it broke after last edit. if you bring one grenade soldier over - guy in front layer i find usually easiest to grab and have him standing upright or in his head - using a corner jump you can get up with just one With one player the camera stays fairly close - which helps reduce lag from the buttload of decorations. | 2011-01-08 01:48:00 Author: Unknown User |
Great level! There are lots of good visual tricks here, including the glow at the top of the tree, the use of extra layers to give a great sense of depth, and the miniature tree trick at the end that makes it look like the camera is back really far. The floor boards look amazing. The use of feathers as pine needles works surprisingly well. Great use of custom music! It all sounded really professional and set the scene well. The stuff with the toy soldiers was great! The cutsene worked really well. I'd like to see you do a level that's just living toys. I'd love to play that and I think you'd be really good at it. The bear's arm kept falling further and further down the more I bounced on it, and after about 2 or 3 bounces, it was too low for me to reach that bauble above it. It was no big deal, because I could just leap past it, but maybe you could put a wobble bolt there with a motion sensor with a small trigger radius that would bring the arm back up. When I stepped on the pad to blow up the lights, the camera angle prevented me from getting a good look at what happened. Also, when I set off that rocket(?) to get rid of that blockade, I really couldn't see what happened there, either. I played that part twice, and I still don't really know what happened. I think you could easily fix this by putting magic mouths on the things you're activating off-camera, setting a camera zone, and wiring them to whatever mechanism you use to trigger those events. This is a trick I just learned about in the last few days (from people on these boards) and it's really added a sheen of polish to my levels. At the start of the race, I was not sure where to go. And when I figured it out, I had to restart because I'd already triggered that red bauble that takes you to the top of the tree and it hadn't fallen back down for me to do it again. You can fix this by adding an emitter (with inverse magnetic key switch) that will cause a new red bauble to appear if the first one disappears. Once you enter that weird, trippy realm where you fight the boss, it might be a good idea to extend the gas background past the lethal gas wall, that way you can't see the regular room to the left when you die there. It kind of pulled me out of the scene. Better still, add an invisible wall instead of a gas barrier, like you do on the other side. In my opinion, there's no reason to needlessly kill people here. A minor thing, but I found a feather ("pine needle") stuck to a window sill in the background. Not sure if that was on purpose. The boss battle was great. I was really fun and I actually felt conflicted about killing the fleeing/begging-for-his-life star. I guess he couldn't be trusted and had to go. I liked the way you showed the star's decreasing health with those Christmas lights that would turn off, one by one. That was pretty genius. Especially since the star starts to look less dim and more smudged up the lower his health gets. Bravo. The one problem I had with the boss was that it was a pain in the butt to stand there, firing the paintinator up in the air at him becuase he was out of range probably 90% of the time. I wonder now if I was supposed to stand on those little yellow stars he was spitting out. I avoided them because I figured they were going to explode or something. Oh well. All the logic all seemed to work really well, and I liked how you had multiple lines of dialogue coming from one character. (Plus one point for the Sirius joke!) I think I have an idea how you did this, but it's something I never thought to do. Great level. Very worth playing, and very deserving of a heart. For F4F, please play one (or both, if you're feeling generous) of these levels. I'd really like you to play my Christmas level, and give me some feedback. All will be appreciated! wow! amazingly good looking level. i really need to take lessons one of these days on how to make nice looking levels. i played this level awhile back and glitched the bobble in the winch that brings you up to the end of the race. it pulled me up and i let go and i fell but it never did... anyway i think that's why i didn't leave feedback, cuz i never finished the level. everything about this level was well done. i wish i could give you some bugs to work out or problems to fix but i found none maybe i wasn't picky enough while i was playing? one wierd thing that happened was when i first went in to fight the star boss, my paint balls would only go about halfway up to him, even shooting straight up. i eventually died and the problem went away. i think it was just a fluke and not something for you to worry about though. thanks for the feedback BTW! ...now that i think of it, the army men right at the beggining were glued together. not sure if that was intentional but it seemed odd to me. | 2011-01-12 03:11:00 Author: harbingernaut Posts: 126 |
Great use of custom music! It all sounded really professional and set the scene well. Glad you enjoyed it - both are available in the level in the green bubbles if you would like to use them. ...now that i think of it, the army men right at the beggining were glued together. not sure if that was intentional but it seemed odd to me. I will check they shouldn't be stuck might be quite tangled though - they are glued to dissolve strips when packed to stop them breaking in the box and to give them the falling jolt when you open the package. --Just checked - none glued i could sort them all out but dragging them - some were tangled but zero glue. It moves whenever you grab it, so you can position it at will. It is more of an obstacle than a lift the bauble above it just lets you see the special green prize bubble (which you cannot get to that way) and not much else - jumping to the top of the present is the way to go When I stepped on the pad to blow up the lights, the camera angle prevented me from getting a good look at what happened. The forced camera on the explosion is actually to hide it mostly - so you hear rather than see, and the second is just a burning bush - I was thinking of doing a missile but thought maybe a burning arrow and decide it was all a bit lame and went for spontaneous combustion :S - I will see what thermo i have to make something slightly more reasonable - i put star stickers for where it "set traps", but they kinda blend in maybe ill make stick on wobbly ones to try and allude more as to what is happening. At the start of the race, I was not sure where to go. And when I figured it out, I had to restart because I'd already triggered that red bauble that takes you to the top of the tree and it hadn't fallen back down for me to do it again. You can fix this by adding an emitter (with inverse magnetic key switch) that will cause a new red bauble to appear if the first one disappears. i played this level awhile back and glitched the bobble in the winch that brings you up to the end of the race. it pulled me up and i let go and i fell but it never did... I built that thing early on and there is a winch to pull it out ( there is 3 on it total) but some people have said it broke - so maybe ill make one ready to replace it is supposed to go up and down for those who like collecting points but i think I am clever enough now to do that even with a re-emitting one. In my opinion, there's no reason to needlessly kill people here. will do - never tested going left - might just bung a forced camera there to look other way as well for good measure. A minor thing, but I found a feather ("pine needle") stuck to a window sill in the background. Not sure if that was on purpose. Nope not on purpose - ill go searching for that little sucker. The boss battle was great. I was really fun and I actually felt conflicted about killing the fleeing/begging-for-his-life star. I guess he couldn't be trusted and had to go. I'd hoped his whinging would make im annoying and worth a kick - maybe ill make him become more insulting if you leave him go - thought of having an alternate ending but the mini room is very thermo expensive - and even then he'd just stab you in the back - trust me on that one. The one problem I had with the boss was that it was a pain in the butt to stand there, firing the paintinator up in the air at him because he was out of range probably 90% of the time. I wonder now if I was supposed to stand on those little yellow stars he was spitting out. I avoided them because I figured they were going to explode or something. Oh well. one wierd thing that happened was when i first went in to fight the star boss, my paint balls would only go about halfway up to him, even shooting straight up. i eventually died and the problem went away. i think it was just a fluke and not something for you to worry about though. After about 55sec a soldier "should" pop up and tell you what to do - might change it so star shooty spot is 2 layers deep - will save some confusion. The paintball height thing is not a fluke - I am a little clever how I get you to the miniature room - basically the boss area moves on pistons - it's obvious from the effect on the gas when you know. The physics doesn't like this - it does take 25 sec to get to the top - then the paintinator fires properly - i tried going slower - but it just prolongs the problem - lower speed doesn't help it and faster snaps all my nifty floaty stars in the gas Maybe its a waiting feature - perhaps I may have the star comment on your firing being a bit short or some sort of euphemism and tell you to try harder - by which time you will be at the top. I could have used a teleport - but I really hate so many levels you cannot ever ace - so I made a continuous run possible and it even gives you the whole miniature end room if you do All the logic all seemed to work really well, and I liked how you had multiple lines of dialogue coming from one character. (Plus one point for the Sirius joke!) I think I have an idea how you did this, but it's something I never thought to do. Happy to show you in create mode if you like - its basically a load of magic mouth each with their cheesy star pun attached to a switch - when the power star is grabbed - it fires a paintball from an emitted to my little walls which count - when each well is hit, it sets off a counter - the logic is a bit more complex than need be because i changed my method and didn't want to redo and break the rest - each registered grab sets off an individual circuit which powers off one of the lights and turns on magic mouth - same goes for the next 3 and that last dissolves the block the star is attached to so he falls. We( my husband, boyfriend and I) were worried that the Sirius pun would go over peoples heads and they assume it was a misspelling it is the most academic of the puns, and is also a reference to a shocking old british TV game show - star quality. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuujqG0Dzh8 watch from 1:55 | 2011-01-12 17:20:00 Author: Unknown User |
