I finally made the thread for this level! =D

In-Depth Analysis

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii220/blackfalcon_album/APhoto_13.jpg

This level is all about the visuals; the opening cutscene is something I’m really proud, there’s some really cool tricks of perspective if you look closely. The goal with this intro was to convey a story with only sounds and music, and I like to think I’ve achieved that. Huge thanks to Midnight_Heist, Brixx101, theageoflolz and Outlaw_Jack for designing the awesome sackpeople you see in the cutscene and at the end.

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii220/blackfalcon_album/APhoto_6.jpg

After the cool cutscene you begin to play; you are a witch on a mission, soaring through the skies whilst catching sweets and evading pumpkins. In my opinion everything looks great; the stickering turned out good, and the scenery rushing past gives the illusion of high speed flight. However, there’s no denying that the gameplay is flawed. The level is still playable but several bugs impede the player’s immersion, hence the low play count. This doesn’t bother me greatly; like I said before the level is all about what you see, and come next Hallowe’en I can guarantee that the ‘what you do’ bit will be vastly improved thanks to LBP2. So when/if you give feedback I’d appreciate some constructive criticism regarding the opening cutscene, the overall visuals and the concept. I’ll work on the gameplay in the meantime, I really shouldn’t have left that till last in October.

If only I'd spent as long on the gameplay as I did on this door. xD

So, final thoughts on this level? I think I’ve finally released a level that I can partially be proud of. It looks really good and I know LBP2 will allow me to fix the gameplay and make a truly great (I hope) level. If you play it I hope you enjoy it, I had lots of fun making it! And to those that have already played it I’d love to hear some feedback!

This is the one you want me to play for F4F, right? Looks great by the way, I'll give feedback later today or tommorrow

EDIT: OK, sorry it was late. Here goes. I'm writing this as I play it, so hopefully it'll be easy to understand (also, my foot is killing me for some reason, so sorry if it's more negative than usual xD)

I thought I was controlling the intro at first, but clearly not. It's very nice though. Oh wait, I am. Wait, wha? I'm at the end. OK, replaying, as I didn't get it.

OK, I get it now, I'm flying around trying to collect stuff. Hmmm, I'm not entirely sure how I crashed, I'd add a meter or something. OK, as the level wasn't what I'd thought, I'll do a more traditional Good/Improvment list.

Good
+Nice, original idea
+Looks very nice
+Very fun once you get it

Improvments
-Some sort of description telling the player what to do
-Some way of knowing how we lose, and how close we are to losing
-What's the one-shot magic burst (R1) for?

Overall, I gave :star::star::star:, because it was a very nice and original level, but it's quite confusing also.

Hmm, there were instructions at the start (after the cutscene), did you not see them? A meter is a very good idea, I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for the feedback!

Explosive Adventures is in My Queue, I'll try to play it for real soon!

Hi there Blackfalcon.

Now I LOVE to see pretty levels, and this was very nicely done. Enjoyed the game play, and though linea, it was fun (was gutted I only got 7th place)

It took me a while to realise what was going on as kirby man mentioned. I get the impression you didn't want to add any speech bubbles, but even though you did a great job in the intro, it still wasn't that CLEAR that you were in control of the witch (cleverly done by the way). I really do think you need at least one speech bubble explaining this.

Real eye 'candy' level, well done! I hope you plan on continuing this with lbp 2, using this as the WHOLE intro, to a longer level?

If you could F4F my level 'House of the flying diggers' that would be grand.

Great level, the visuals were awesome! You did a pretty good job of explaining the story without words, which was pretty cool. The gameplay was original, but it was kinda hard to control the witch. I am also assuming you built this level with a full screen tv, because on my wide screen you can see the edges of the background in the cut scene, you might wanna extend them.

Cool level, 5 stars! F4F: Fight for Justice... link is in my sig.

+ Level description.
- Extend the title card to widescreen. Some dark matter emitters, moving block on piston (end of level) also visible.
++ Cutscene! Bonus points for having no dialog. Good sound effects and music, and visuals/animation obviously.
+ Skippable also.
+ Gamplay in general.
+ Thanks for the credit at the end, that little rain of candy looked great. Full credit to you for making this level.

Wow, really neat idea.
I liked how the witch controlled (although she did fall over once), she looked/played like she was actually flying.
Cutscene, visuals, and concept are great. Can't wait till the LBP2 version where you perfect the gameplay.
<3
Some great F4F threads around this week!

EDIT:

@midnight_heist: Thanks for all the '+'s! How do I "extend the title card to widescreen"?
Just corner edit the square (behind the text) into a landscape size rectangle.

D'oh! Also, you already played Explosive Adventures, that was my response

Sorry, I can play it again if you like, I might know what I'm doing, so I'll be able to give better feedback.

Great work on this level. This has one of the best cutscenes, if not the best cutscene, I've seen in LBP. I can tell this took a lot of time and effort.

Visuals looked good, and the broomstick flight was fun. Whatever hidden mechanics you used to make this work were effective, although not perfect. Flying was a little weird and controlling the witch was sluggish. But I can't fault you for that because you've done amazing things with LBP that it was never intended to be used for -- a real cutscene and playing as someone other than sackboy/girl. I've seen other levels where you control a little space ship or something, but your commitment to cartoon-quality visuals makes this experience unique. The idea of collecting candy corn (which looked and worked great) and dodging the pumpkins was clever and I felt like I was playing some old school side-scroller.

I really wish the flight had been a bit longer. By the time I got used to dodging and collecting, it was all over. But that's a good problem to have, I guess. And the fact that you made the cutscene skippable by hitting R1 makes repeat experiences not a chore, but as fun as they should be.

Also, it was cool that you let other level developers "cameo" at the end.

I have a Halloween-themed level out right now as well, and I would really like some feedback on it from you if you have some spare time and feel like playing someone else's spooky level. It's called Trick or Terror! and the thread for it is here:

Thanks all for your great and generous feedback! I'm working my way through F4F!

@Shade_Seeker: I looked at my cutscene again, and it doesn't convey the story as well as I'd like. Sorry it wasn't very clear, I really wanted to do a cutscene without speech bubbles. I'm glad you (and others) appreciate the witch controlling system, it's not perfect but I think it's pretty clever. I do indeed plan to remake this in LBP2, hopefully in time for next Hallowe'en! It's good to know what needs improving, thanks!

@SackRacer77: Again, thanks for compliments on the cutscene, it's undoubtedly the best bit of the level! Thanks so much for telling me about the wide screen problem, I'll try to remedy this in the remake!

@midnight_heist: Thanks for all the '+'s! How do I "extend the title card to widescreen"? The witch does sometimes fall over, it's a bit of a bandy system, sorry. Like you said LBP2 will fix this.

@kirbyman62: Actually, I never played your level, I only watched the video, which isn't fair since you played mine. I have now played it, so I'll be able to give some feedback from a player's point of view!

@BronchoNate: You said such nice things, thanks! ^__^ Everything you said was bang on, I appreciate the honesty and the willingness to write a lengthy review!

Expect F4F sometime soon guys. xD

Hey I forgot if I had posted my comments or not...I think I just left notes on your level. Very good intro and story, absolutly thought it was wonderful. I also liked the ending of the players being named. THe gameplay itself was a wonderful idea, and I loved the art, but I ran into control issues. I was not able to move up or down much and only randomly, the first time I played the witch broke off and was just being dragged on the ground when she hit a pumpkin. THe sedond time I was not able to fly to get any of the magic until right before I died. I loevd the option, just wish she would move up and down or back and forth. I have not made a side scroller yet, but I was able to make a pod for the main spaceship in a level that would fly using a jetpack and two pistons set on 0 strength, it allowed it to move pretty well, not sure if you are trying something else. For the work that went into that level, you really need to just touch up controls because it rocked. Oh some of the trees would vanish about 2/3rds into the screen as they passed (forefront trees). As always thanks for the feedback you already gave me, and I was just happy to finally play one of your levels.2011-01-19 00:11:00

I'm really sorry you had such a bad time with the gameplay Celsus, it's extremely temperamental, but it works okay sometimes. The control system is a bit convoluted, it would work better if the witch was lighter (and even better still with a Controlinator!). The sackboy isn't actually in the witch, he activates sensors that move pistons holding the witch. It's an interesting device, might publish it since it's completely obsolete now. I'll do this level up in LBP2 sometime, and I promise it will be way more fun to play, and even nicer to look at! Thanks!
