Best Videogame Character Ever?
Archive: 150 posts
Put your votes in now. Who do you think is the best? Please make your reasons good ones! The only rule is that the character must have ORIGINATED in a video game, so you can't have, for example, Donatello from the TMNT just because he was in a video game. Cliche as it is, my personal vote goes to Sephiroth. He 's got a great backstory, that seems simple enough at first, but is really expanded on throughout the game (and additionally FFVII: Advent Children), he has a cool look, no mercy, and a stupidly big sword. He's my choice, who is yours? http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7c/Sepheac2.jpg | 2008-11-05 18:47:00 Author: flakmagnet Posts: 1084 |
Hummm... =/ there's so many videogame characters out there, but I'm lazy and don't want to have to think, so i'm just going to say Yoshi.. yoooshiii.. | 2008-11-05 18:49:00 Author: Ozymandias Posts: 223 |
Pshhh, Sephiroth. If that's the case, my favorite video game character is Kefka from FFVI. The hellishly cunning, cruel and psychotic antagonist of Final Fantasy VI. Seriously, what's better than a guy dressed like a clown, who's killed dozens of people, and has a madman's personality...He even has his own evil laugh Now that's original. My favorite thing about him though, is that he's the only FF Villain that actually succeeded in his goals. Its just a prime example on how popularity isn't a good way to judge how awesome and great a villain is. Hell, Kefka's laugh is more epic than Sephiroth himself. Its just a shame that the greater villains of FF are overlooked (Kefka/Kuja) while the masses prefer that mama's boy. <_< My opinion. http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i83/Renzokukenlionheart/kefka.jpg | 2008-11-05 18:59:00 Author: Forsaken Posts: 950 |

The Skull Kid from Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, I was only ten when I first played the game, but I love that character. The way he gave into corruption because he lost all of his friends... so sad. ;_; | 2008-11-05 21:04:00 Author: Code1337 Posts: 3476 |

Yoshi So I'm a Senior and we had Spirit Week two weeks ago, and our theme was Super Smash Senior, of course I chose Yoshi and I had big white green dotted eggs, filled with confetti and I just went to school and started throwing them at everyone. Yes, I am a Senior  | 2008-11-05 23:20:00 Author: Whalio Cappuccino Posts: 5250 |
Gray Fox...? Yeah, he's awesome. Terrible life, and all that. But I never really got what was so special about Sephiroth. He never struck me as the awesomeness that all the people voting him to the top of all the polls and stuff make him out to be. Hm... anyone here ever play the Tales of games? Eh, I suppose Yggdrasial or however you spell his name is cool because he wants to create a world free of rascism or whatever but goes the wrong way. but I like Tales of the Abyss more because I like clone stories in general or something, but no super awesome characters there- D'OH! JADE! >_> He's cool... | 2008-11-05 23:31:00 Author: RockSauron Posts: 10882 |
But I never really got what was so special about Sephiroth. He never struck me as the awesomeness that all the people voting him to the top of all the polls and stuff make him out to be. Give a villain a ridiculously big sword, devilish looks, long gray hair, cool one-liners, a..."cool" backstory, and there you have it. Guaranteed to win 90% of people who see him. And let's not forget his own theme song which shouts "SEPHIROTH!" every 4 seconds. xD @ Whaaale: And here I expected some kind of Whale character I never heard of | 2008-11-06 00:03:00 Author: Forsaken Posts: 950 |
Big Boss. Because he killed his mom, who was his mentor to clear his name. After killing her, her reputation was that of a terrorist. The woman he loved betrayed him and almost killed him. But I never really got what was so special about Sephiroth. He never struck me as the awesomeness that all the people voting him to the top of all the polls and stuff make him out to be. Warning - There will be spoilers in here, most minor, but still. So if you see the game's title and haven't finished it yet and still plan to, you have been warned! For me, it's not because he is supposed to be (in universe) "Awesome" as in imposing, or powerful (which he is) and really, it's not about the looks or stupidly large sword (though they help) it is his nature and thinking, his cut-throat villany, and the fact that at the time, he was the first VG villain I hated, not because of how frustrating he was to defeat, but because of his actions, both against Aeris (Say what you like, that's what she was called when I played it) and Nibleheim. The other thing is (and I freely admit) it is a somewhat slanted choice, as FFVII was the first game I knowingly spent 120+ game hours on. That doesn't include non-saves, deaths, and the one time I had a power cut. And that was just the first time through. Now, obviously, that was going to put some slant in the kind of bias I would put in, and we didn't know Aeris for long enough, Cloud is (IMO) a self-obsessed jerk, Barret is a gun-nut without much backstory, Yuffie stole my BLEEPING materia, Tifa has a good backstory but lacks a little emotional depth to ever be much more than the "other girl" and Vincent didn't have much more backstory that I picked up on other than "he's a vampire" or something. Of the playable characters, my favorites are actually Cait Sith (though not for gameplay reasons) and Red XIII, but neither were strong enough to overshadow the villain of the piece for me. It's still a close thing for me. Jack, the faceless character of Bioshock, has a great history, but then so do Andrew Ryan and Fontaine and Atlas. They are always close in the running, and I suspect given more time in reflection, may take over the position after more nostalgia (something which ALWAYS affects people in these kinds of poll). Other people with great characters are Holly, my Fallout 3 character, but I can't vote for her, partly, because I made her who she is and no-one will have the exact same character, and partly also because I haven't finished the game yet. Also, when you have read the books, the master chief and Cortana from the Halo series have great depth, especially Cortana, but, most of the character building is in outside material, and whilst it is considered canon, it can hardly count as why the characters are great, especially given the general concensus as to the chief's personality or lack thereof in the games. | 2008-11-06 08:55:00 Author: flakmagnet Posts: 1084 |
Revolver Ocelot. I love how he handles his gun. Plus I think that the Colt Single Action Army is a good gun to use because in real life one shot and your dead | 2008-11-06 13:04:00 Author: Unknown User |
Big Boss. Because he killed his mom, who was his mentor to clear his name. After killing her, her reputation was that of a terrorist. The woman he loved betrayed him and almost killed him. He later led an army to save the world, just because he could. *slaps forehead* The Boss could be the greatest character for her sacrifice. Ocelot in MGS3 was also fantastic. Probably the best character in the series. | 2008-11-06 14:46:00 Author: ryryryan Posts: 3767 |
Well flak, at least you like Sephiroth for the right reasons >_> Not just a follower. *slaps forehead* The Boss could be the greatest character for her sacrifice. Ocelot in MGS3 was also fantastic. Probably the best character in the series. Hahah xD I was just waiting for someone to comment on "Big Boss' Mom". The Boss was indeed a very cool character. Not just because of her sacrifice, everything about her was cool. The CQC Boss fight at the end of MGS3 was epic. Also, Spoilers ahead. The Boss is Ocelot's mother. Proven many times <_< | 2008-11-06 15:01:00 Author: Forsaken Posts: 950 |

Personal my favorite I would say is Raiden from the Metal Gear series, I ve never saw anyones emotions perfectly portrayed and in such a sense that you actually feel sorry for him. Plus in MGS 4 hes just as bad *** killing machine | 2008-11-06 17:42:00 Author: Kyashu Posts: 447 |

You want a character you can feel sorry for? Today I was playing Fallout 3, Moira broke my heart. Specific Spoilers ahead: I read somewhere that if you convince her not to continue with the book anymore, you get better deals at her store, she can repair better, and you get an ability. These are true. But, then everytime I talk to her, she seems like a broken woman, the poor thing has nothing to look forward to anymore! I know there are some that don't like her, but I did, she was a cheery ray of sunshine in a post-apocolyptic wasteland. And I broke her spirit. The wasteland got a little darker after I did that. I'm almost considering reloading to an earlier save, but I think I've gone too far into the game after it now to warrant it! Please note, this is NOT a nomination for her, but a response to the post about Raiden being emotionally moving. Moira moved me today in a way I did not expect. | 2008-11-06 20:32:00 Author: flakmagnet Posts: 1084 |

I had to think it over.. but I narrowed mine down to the OBVIOUS choice Captain Quark... The GREATEST!BESTEST!SUPEREST!MOSTPERFECTIST! Superhero/Supervillian ever made. Big Boss, Snake, Sephy and all them others... did they ever have their own video game made after them in the middle of a video game? I think not! And that's how you determine greatness... you have a video game made after you.. you're the GREATEST!BESTEST!SUPEREST!MOSTPERFECTIST! in the world | 2008-11-06 22:08:00 Author: DaSaintFan Posts: 136 |

I'm changing. Phoenix Wright would be perfect if he was more confident. Everyone thinks I should be lawyer cause I'm a smooth talker and will force people to believe what I believe through sheer badgering and resilience. | 2008-11-07 02:55:00 Author: Unknown User |
Let me explain my choice, Max Payne. To be honest, I've never actually played the Max Payne series. However, I am in ways familiar with it. And Max really is an incredibly well-developed character. His motivations, how he reacts, all of it is very human. He's got some real emotion and texture. And he's got his share of faults and weaknesses, too. Plus, the fact that he does combat in bullet-time, while dual-wielding, helps a lot from the coolness angle. | 2008-11-07 03:17:00 Author: Mark D. Stroyer Posts: 632 |

Hrmm... who is my favorite video game character... ? I've never actually thought about it, but the more I do, the more I realize that I really like Doctor Vidic from Assassin's Creed... @_@ I think it was his arrogant attitude of total condescension that appealed to me. Oh, and his awesome paragraphs of rant after rant. I'm weird like that. '>_> | 2008-11-07 17:46:00 Author: ScytheOfGrim Posts: 438 |

Who remembers how in Max Payne, the very first game, how the character always had that same smile on his face, the very same texture throughout? xD Shooting people - awkward smile. Having weird visions - awkward smile. Having to deal with the death of his family - awkward smile. xD Anyway, my favourite has to be Leon from RE4 =D He was just so ******* xD | 2008-11-07 23:49:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |

Bridget from Guilty Gear, obviously. He's so obscenely cute, and also my best character in the game. If I were to pick a 2nd favorite, though, I'd actually go with Wario. Aside from the fact that I've *always* been a huuuuuuuuge fan of the Mario universe, Wario's line of games has always been a major favorite of mine. In particular the absolute genius that was Wario Land 2. He's also just such a fun character, and makes a great rival to Mario. | 2008-11-12 01:38:00 Author: Bridget Posts: 334 |

....mmmmm... spent so long thinking about this. As much as I want to say Snake (either one ) and all the other great vedio game characters. My choice is going to have to be Conrad Hart from Flashback a game I totaly fell in love with as soon as I had played it. I'd have to say Super Mario or Sackboy. Super Mario has been there forever and EVERYONE knows who he is. And Sackboy to me is like the Neo-Mario. It's just so, unique. And the best part of Sackboy is that he's an extension of yourself. He's [Or She] is the most innovative character out there. | 2008-11-15 18:27:00 Author: Night Angel Posts: 1214 |

I think that E.T. game was actually voted the worst game of all time. Thankfully I never played it. It basically destroyed the videogame industry! Well, and games like it. It was made in 5 weeks, so it's an accomplishment that it could barely be playable then... was made to make sure it could make the Christmas rush to cash in, so they made it in 5 weeks. They just overestimated how popular it would be, and ended up with thousands of unsold copies. they buried them somewhere in the Arizona Desert, I believe. It was the prime example of no quality control for the Atari that made almost every game horrible that caused the video game crash of 1983. The industry was saved by a plumber a few years later. Yep, Joe the Plumber. He's the best! He SAVED Videogames! | 2008-11-16 23:54:00 Author: RockSauron Posts: 10882 |

I'd have to agree on Kratos being definitely among the best video game characters. I'm not sure I thought so highly of him after God of War II, but Chains of Olympus sealed the deal for me. Amazing game; on par with the PS2 games in my opinion. | 2008-11-20 16:27:00 Author: supersickie Posts: 1366 |
A fan of the silent protagonist eh? I've always liked Link, he is in my top 10, but the Skull kid from Majora's Mask beats him imo. skull kid was pretty cool, but but when Link turns to Fierce Deity Link, that was AWESOME! xD The best mask EVER! | 2008-11-20 23:33:00 Author: Sage Posts: 2068 |

Solid Snake/Raiden/Ninja Grey Fox I'm not even going to explain why. For those of you i would of had to explain to, you should be shot. But that sounds too mean, so shot, but while you watched pokemon, bringing back all your greatest childhood memories. Also Nathan Hale since Resistance 1 is still probably my greatest game of the ever, regardless of his inability to speak. | 2008-11-22 18:53:00 Author: FrozenNeon Posts: 77 |

But that's an anime character, not a video game character... o__o Sure, he's been in games, but so has Shaquille O'Neal... Exactly, first post was very clear, the character must have originated in videogaming. Another vote for me, can't beat Cortana. Smart, sassy, full of personality that makes up for the lack of the chief's complete lack of on screen character. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/76/Cortana_h3.png | 2008-11-25 07:31:00 Author: flakmagnet Posts: 1084 |

Arthas, from the Warcraft series of games. The old WC3 videos in his armor gave me the chills it was so amazing. Also his character is amazing...Paladin on a mission to save Azeroth turned into a Death Knight and pawn of the Lich King. Too cool!! Tidus from FFX. FFX is, for me, the masterpiece of the FF series and probably always will be. The reason is all down to the player being as alone as Tidus at the beginning and we go through and understand the world in FFX at the same pace as he does. | 2008-12-01 21:22:00 Author: Dave-la-kingenbo Posts: 43 |

My favourite game character was tough, but it would have to be Raiden from MGS2 and MGS4. His story was hard to follow for a lot of people I think, but I understood him and felt bad for him. He was always being kicked around in MGS2 although he was pretty awesome. In MGS4 he owned Vamp... for a while anyway. | 2008-12-19 20:10:00 Author: Bear Posts: 2079 |
I'd probably have to say 'Lynch' from 'Kane & Lynch'. I thought he was really funny, in a psychotic kinda way, like how he responded to Kane concerning his actions in the bank job | 2008-12-20 00:13:00 Author: Sack-Andreas Posts: 70 |

Flash absolutely does not count. He's been in comics for about 50 years (I'm not wiki-ing it for his first appearace, it's somewhere near that number) and his first videogame appearance wasn't until about 10 years ago. | 2008-12-21 08:12:00 Author: flakmagnet Posts: 1084 |

Call me generic or old but the best videogame character ever made for me is Mario. Why? What's an hero? What's a mascot? They pretty much all share specific resemblance don't they? Most heros are strong, are beautiful. They do something you dream to do. They have a cool sounding name and awesome jobs and habits. Now Mario is absolutely not like that. It fascinate me because he's the perfect non-hero. Something just clicked in his oddness and he became the most popular character ever in videogames and even to this day he still is. That's why he fascinates me. -Mario doesn't have a cool name but more the name of your old uncle. -He's a freaking plumber! who dreams to be a plumber? -He's fat with flashy clothes and a mustache. He can't be beautiful and attractive. Mario is the best hero without having any hero characteristics. Seriously, he wins hands down. | 2009-01-19 19:17:00 Author: RangerZero Posts: 3901 |

Hard question man. Too many to choose from... Its kind of like asking "What is your favourite movie character of all times?" So, I'll narrow it down to my favourite UNDEAD video-game characters. =) http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k268/I_Clavdivs/jan04_sidekick_03_morte.jpg -Morte, from Planescape. A foul mouth floating skill sidekick. What is not awesome about that? http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k268/I_Clavdivs/Sandro.jpg -Sandro, from Heroes of Might and Magic. An utter meanie and evil genius. Never mess with a necromancer... http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k268/I_Clavdivs/54-manny.gif -Manuel Calavera, from Grim Fandango. Salesman, Casino Owner, Ship Captain, Messiah... This dude kicks ***. http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k268/I_Clavdivs/MI3-Murray.gif -Murray, From Monkey Island. Mind of like Morte, sans levitation abilities, which leaves him a slightly more pisst off animated skull. Honourable undead mentions go to the Dread Pirate LeChuck and Stubbs the Zombie = ) | 2009-01-20 07:01:00 Author: Morrinn3 Posts: 493 |
The first one is the dog from Okami. DOG!?? Reverse that word and you're on the mark. It's Amaterasu, the Wolf Sun God from Okami, a horribly under-rated action adventure game on PS2 and Wii. Also, the second one was Lucas and Claus from Mother 3. | 2009-01-20 18:32:00 Author: UmJammerSully Posts: 1097 |
Move Murray to the top. Do it now! Otherwise, good list. | 2009-01-20 19:34:00 Author: flakmagnet Posts: 1084 |
I have to pick just one? Hmmm... I'll cheat. Commander Keen, Duke Nukem, Lara Croft, Mario, Solid Snake, Sonic the Hedgehog. Sorry, I just can't isolate the most badass of them all, they are all equally special to me but for different reasons. | 2009-01-20 22:55:00 Author: Foofles Posts: 2278 |
Also, the second one was Lucas and Claus from Mother 3. Mother 3 is such an awesome game (funnily enough, I'm not really a big fan of Earthbound. I liked the humour and everything, but the gameplay was boring to me. Mother 3 just seems different somehow, and I really enjoyed it). Oh, and I'm chipping in a vote for Mr Saturn as best game character. I guess he should tie with Murray or something. | 2009-01-21 00:00:00 Author: Ace Posts: 118 |

Raziel and Kain from Legacy of Kain and Soul Reaver They are vampires, Raziel can also switch dimension, they're cruel and hungry of souls the first and blood the second. I loved them since the first Legacy of Kain on PSOne. I wish they'll make an episode for PS3, but they won't for sure. | 2009-01-30 00:25:00 Author: Miglioshin Posts: 336 |

Kefka from Final Fantasy III/VI. Because, unlike every single other JRPG villain ever made, he knows how to get business done. And his body count is kind of ridiculous. | 2009-02-01 11:22:00 Author: UCHU Posts: 73 |

Eldred. Who you ask? Main character from the best game ever made (I'm sorry to say it but it's humour even rivals that of LBP) Sacrifice!!! Reasons: Included in the best game ever made, my favourite voice actor from then on 'Paul Eiding' (Mainly known from MGS by everyone but me) did his voice and he has a weird cape which is bony but not... | 2009-02-04 20:33:00 Author: Shermzor Posts: 1330 |

Raziel's a good one... I loved the first Blood Omen and Soul Reaver, but didn't like the action take on all the other one's. I liked the Zelda elements in the originals, and that's what I wanted in the sequels. Alucard is my personal favorite, because Symphony of the Night is my favorite game. I've even got a costume made for him that I throw on depending on the level. I really need to get around to making that SotN level... I remember reading in projects that someone was making one. | 2009-02-04 22:38:00 Author: Unknown User |
Without a doubt... the Boss from MGS3. The greatest character I've ever seen in a game. Enigmatic, loyal, patriotic, beautiful, strong-willed, deep... I could go on. Her story in that game is the best character arc I've witnessed in games and I doubt any character will ever overtake her. http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2004/reviews/914828_20040820_screen006.jpg Big Boss. Because he killed his mom, who was his mentor to clear his name. After killing her, her reputation was that of a terrorist. The woman he loved betrayed him and almost killed him. He later led an army to save the world, just because he could. MGS3 Spoiler: The Boss wasn't Big Boss' mother. She was Ocelot's mother. The Sorrow was Ocelot's father. And I'm not sure if you know but the way you say it implies that you don't. The Boss was not a terrorist, she was incredibly patriotic and died in service to her country so that the US would not go to war. She gave Volgin the nukes to gain his trust so that she could get The Philosopher's Legacy and bring it back to the US. When Volgin launched the nuke (which she didn't know he would do), the Soviet Union blamed the US and the only way for them to clear their name was to kill the Boss as a traitor. She knew this and willingly went to battle with Snake which she knew would lead to her death if she lost. She didn't lose on purpose but she did die as a patriot, in service to her country. This is why I love her character, the loyalty is humbling. PS. Sorry if you did know all that . | 2009-02-05 00:45:00 Author: Burrich Posts: 1018 |
Oh, aside from Solid Snake and Naked Snake, I must say Zangief. Because in a competition initially chock-full of fireball throwers and stay-away-from-me tactics, he alone had the cajones to get up close and personal.
