The PSP Side's Future...

Archive: 107 posts

This is something I've kinda concerned about for a while... I think that the PSP Side is beginning to... DIE! (Dun, dun, duuuun) Why, you might ask? Well let's go over the evidence and possible causes...

1.) The Lack of Levels - We've had a fantastic year of levels. But recently there has hardly been any decent levels published. (I'm excluding the 12DOC Project here!)

2.) The Lack Fresh Talent - Throughout the PSP's lifetime so far there has been fresh talent popping up from time to time. (Such as SketchNZ) But there hasn't been many new users within the past month that's really made me... WOW!

3.) LittleBigPlanet 2 - Possibly the PSP Side's biggest threat is LBP2. As quite a few of players on the PSP Side own PS3s, there is a high chance that some of them will by LBP2. (Admitadly, I have a huge project lined up for the game's release)

4.) The Big Names - The main factor that pushed the community from the beginning was the big name creators such as Amazingflyingpoo and Taffey. These creators have been moving onto other stuff recently. (Sorry if I sound like I'm bashing you guys. )

5.) The Recent DLC Announcement - Probably the biggest reason for the PSP Side's decline. DLC was factor that kept some players within the community, hoping that Cambridge would add more stuff we wanted and making the create mode more stable. Unfortunately these things are extremely unlikely to happen now.

Sorry to be a Mister Negative Pants but I wanted to get this off my chest. The shining light for the PSP Side is the 12DOC and Kindred. But I think we need something a little more permenent to keep the community together. (Such as contests)

Any suggestions or thoughts?

well i am hating the ps3 version. not the people just the game.
so ill be sticking around.
well seeing as im done for 12 doc unless i get a last min request.
that means im ready to kill myself on another project.
or just kill myself.
so if thats what your thinking then im up for it. if not then im still up for it.
but yes i will do anything for the community

I certainly hope that the PSP section doesn't die. I'm currently working on a great level for you guys, and it would be horrible if everyone suddenly...dissapeared.2010-12-22 23:12:00

I don't know why you guys are worrying about this so much. The PS3 side felt the same way until the gained more players, then they started to complain about all the levels being horrible.

Remember, LBP PS3 didn't gain much momentum the first year, so the same thing goes for the PSP. Besides, I'm sure there's a reason why Cambridge and Mm have dropped DLC production for the PSP.

From what I can remember... It's possible I'm wrong...
I think Taffey is going to stay on the PSP more than the PS3 side. Sure he will play LBP 2, but he plays Forza aswell. (And a lot of other PS1 classics.) What, can't we just play another game for awhile and get to LBP PSP later? It's not the first time we've seen creators play other games then come back to this. Sure, I might create level(s) on LBP2, but won't I come bac, to LBP PSP? Heck yes I will. Amazingflyingpoo might stay on both games because he's got along with the PSP side, and he didn't forget the PS3 side aswell. (I hope he finishes LBL series too! ) There are still reasons to why people get LBP PSP still. The fact that it is portable which is why I came here than to go to PS3. Taffey went to the PSP side because it was portable. (I think...) Sure there is decline in DLC, but there are still PSP creators who will stay here and some who will move on. We've got enough DLC anyway. When you mentioned you haven't seen people who wowed you, well, let's be honest, seeing creators like them are rare. Besides Christmas will come up, who knows what'll happen.

Well, LBP2 seems to be the only thing that's keeping the PS3 side running for now, if that were nonexistent, I doubt the forums would be much at all...
Very much unfortunate for you guys and the DLC news, I miss the DLC too, as I simply liked to see what thing they would come up with next.

LBP1 is dieing too, I don't know of any good creators, still creating, all too many are distracted by the LBP2 beta, and since I still play LBP1 quite a bit, this is a large disappointment.

What you guys should really do is...

I hope the PSP side keeps going, its always been great here. Lets hope all the big-name creators are too busy with Kindred for now to publish... With LBP2, of course its huge, but somehow I find the whole concept rather daunting. I don't think this community is going to die out just yet. 2010-12-23 11:56:00

Christmas is in 2 days!!!
Don't forget that!!!
I sure a ton of kids will be getting LBP PSP.

Recovery plan:
Everyone publish a level promoting LBPCentral.com!!!
Then hopefully a lot of more people will show up.
(That is how I found this site. I think it was a level called, "LBPC_Volcanoe" or something close to that. I think it had LBPCentral.com in the description. That is how I found my way here.)

I agree with that but I don't think it's entirely true. Speaking about the two systems in general, yes PS3 is by far the better system with better games, graphics, and amount of people using it. But when speaking about LBP for the two systems, I personally prefer the PSP since it is easier to get your level showcased and popular than on PS3 due to the smaller fan base and less competition. Also, I find it easier using static and dynamic pieces instead of attaching floaty material to everything. I think the PS3 side is great since you can play it with friends and there are great levels for that like bomb survivals and the like, but if you're really into creating and getting your levels noticed, I think the PSP version is better.

As B3 is currently silenced, he asked me to post this for him. (VIA a PM)

There is one important thing to note here: the PSP side will only die if we let it. It's not Cambridge's fault. It's not LBP2's fault. It will be our fault.

Now, there's an important distinction to be made here. Who is this "us"? It's easier to explain who it isn't. It's not the first few names you think of, it's not AFP, Taffey, or jeffcu28. Nor is it the trash we have to deal with, the real bottom-feeders of our little forum. You know who I'm talking about. It's you. The rest of us. The creators who put together awesome things, and yet have room to improve. It will be up to us to decide whether this little subcategory that could keeps going. Look at the Tavern - it's not a group of the ones who'll get creator spotlights, the ones who get little 'letter' levels made for them. It's the creators who put their all into their levels, pushing themselves to get better with each and every creation they publish. That's who this comes down to. So anyone looking for one of the big names to pull this together should look elsewhere. They're not going to save us. We have to save ourselves.

"That's nice. Real inspiring. Now what are we supposed to do about it?" Alright. It's not going to be easy. This is a war on two fronts. Believe it or not, the least important of the two is our levels. Don't get me wrong, making great levels is very important. After all, we're built around the game. So push yourself, think outside the box. If you're Fastbro, don't set out to make another Fastbro level. Set out to try something new. Sure, making another Jonzian platformer is easy, and fun, but the community needs innovation. And if you don't lead it, NO ONE will.

But the more important thing is how you act on this site. Let me explain why the PS3 section has worked. It worked because the trash, the same type of trash that pollutes our own side, was never given a foothold. Anyone came in with H4H, they were ignored, or better yet, told off. The section worked because they treated everyone as they deserved to be treated. People that made good levels were loved, those that threw together garbage were told to leave. Our own side has been weakened because we failed to do this. We, myself included made a big mistake.

"They'll get better. They'll start using basic grammar. They'll add music. They'll learn. All we have to do is play nice, and we'll have great new creators." Well, do you see any of these people making good levels? Do you see them getting spotlighted? Do you see them even trying? No. And they never will. They'll continue to ruin a good site. The mods won't help us get rid of them, either. No, the mods are still under the "play nice" spell. That's why it's up to us. Obviously we can't take the direct route, call them names, and insult them. That just leads to infractions. But there are other ways to heal the PSP section, which you'll see in the new year, if people are willing to stand with me. It won't be easy. It won't be fun. But it's what we must do to keep this section alive.

Lastly, a note for those who will attack me for this writing. I'm not doing this because I have some hatred of new members. Or some strong dislike of bad levels. I'm doing this because, as I've said before, I've seen this happen too many times before. Good sites, both bigger and smaller than LBPC, have fallen because of new members being allowed to go wild. Because of mods that were strict with the good members, while the troublemakers got away with murder. In the past, I just stood aside, fleeing to new sites after the ones I loved fell. This time, I'm not running. I don't want to see this site die. And so I'm putting my foot down this time. Is anyone with me?

So, I've been trying to get a spotlight for quite some time, but LBPC hates me.

B3s post: Wow. So thats what you have been writing. (I'm a bit late aren't I...)

For the most part, I agree. It will be us giving up that lets this die. If there is no LBP PSP 2, who cares? Its a great game that deserves to stand alone. (Now this part is going to get me lynched...) However, you do have to remember that everyone once made some mistakes. Even you B3.

P.S: As for deliberate spammers, they deserve the worst fate of all. Soggy apricots will not suffice.

This could possibly lead to more good creators leaving this site

Ahem. May I say something?

I do not see the PSP Section dying. It is actually quite the opposite. 60% of the people I see posting here were not members when I first came to LBPC. And of those who were here, few have left. The PSP section has grown tremendously. There are many contests and many ways to involve yourself in community projects. Back when I first joined the thought of a community project was deemed unoriginal due to an attempt at one early on which failed.

Now I must say, Taffey, jeff, afp and salieri have not been posting much, BUT you have no idea how hard theyve been working behind the scenes. Taffey has not only been juggling work and video games along side lbp, but has comitted himself to selflessly helping out the psp and ps3ers of the site. He has been making podcasts, recording videos for many many ppl, voice acting, organising PSP spotlights, helping out in PS3 spotlights, supporting community projects and liking my status updates on facebook.2010-12-23 23:25:00

It should not be an expectation for him to create awesome levels to "keep the community alive". This community is thriving! The PSP side has its own creator spotlight! CheezeBo has a lbp Vlog which contains much psp news. MyMoonMedia is producing LBP PSP machinima. Kindred and 12 d.o.c are producing quality levels for everyone to enjoy. Feedback is often given to your levels. Everyone is friendly. Contests are aplenty. The community is not too big so posts r not drowned.2010-12-23 23:33:00

The PSP side is definitely not dying. If anything, people have been absent because they are too busy creating and contributing.

This is seeming like a 2012 type argument. In 2012, it says that the world as we know it is going to change, not asplode and kill everyone.

No. I'm being serious. Nobody ever said that everyone is going to dye. They only said that the world is going to change. People took it wrong and said everyone will dye.
I'm exited for Planet X!
They say that in 2012, we will be able to see it, as it passes through the solar system.

I thought the Mayan or Aztec calendar ends on December 21, 2010. That's why people think we're going to die. people think the mayans/aztecs were really really good astronomers (which they were) but took it to the extreme saying they knew the world was going to end. I personally, as a Christian, don't believe any of this.

Yeah, there is more to it than the Mayan calender ending. There is this thing about a pole shift that has got me worried. Albert Einstein said it will happen. (http://aliendesire.tripod.com/poleshift.html)

and 11:11 21/12/2012 is just when the universe resets and we become closer to previous times.
you need a non linear veiw of time to understand this...
so are you happy about the 2012 situation?

Great post B3!
I'll join your Reformation, or as you called it, Реформатион, but with one condition: the word is spelled wrong. It's spelled Реформация. Trust me, I'm Russian.

You know, I don't like these predictions and there is a joke I like - Mayas ended their calendar because they had run out of space and ink.
Sorry for off-topic post.

I have noticed a slight decline in quality levels on the psp side over the last month. Spotlighted levels have become fewer, and it something that has been bothering me too. I blame it on lbp2, and the fact that most everyone is getting a ps3 now. I have had a ps3 since 06. Lbp1 since day one. And I can not wait for lbp2 to be released. I never got into create mode on ps3. psp is where I feel more comfortable, and I have made a name for myself over here. I do plan on diving into create mode in lbp2. I can hear that game calling my name, and I cannot resist it's sweet voice. However, I will never stop creating on psp. I have tons more free time with my psp than my ps3. With my psp, I can create anytime, anywhere, and that is the big draw for me. I do alot of work out of town, and my psp is always by my side. If I have more than a minute to kill, my psp is on, and I am doing something in create mode. So, I guess what I am saying is that, I plan on moving to lbp2, but you guy's will never be rid of me over here.2010-12-24 18:02:00

Does no one else think, the decline of levels, is solely because of community projects.

To me, it seemed so obvious, quality creators are spending more time creating on community projects than individual levels. And since our community is already small, with more than one project, more than a majority of the community is not building individual levels.

I just started making my next level. I made the logic for it a few weeks ago, but now I'm adding the actual level.

Anyway, I think you are right. I was going to start another community project, but I see that two at a time is enough.

Maybe the decline in levels is just because some of us are a bit slow at creating.

We must remember that 'noob' is a stage in the creator growth span. Eventually it will become 'master', but it takes time.

I really hope this section doesn't die. I started out in the vast LittleBigUniverse in this section, and I am grateful I did. If I started out in the ps3 section, I would have probably been overwhelmed with all of the stuff going on. The creators here have true talent, and they always know how to make a level more than just a level, but a story. I felt comfortable for the time I was here, and it would be terrible if it disappeared... just like that.2010-12-24 20:39:00

hehehe. yeah...

Ali is part of the project, so that's why he hasn't been here too often.

I don't see what the big deal is with LBL. I mean, when I had to do the layout for the 12 DOC Mega Thread there, they don't have half the code we can use. They don't even have [CENTER]!!! Also, our threads are much nicer anyways.

Well, to be honest, the reason you guys aren't as "active" as the PS3 side is because you stay on one thread and/or in one section and spam a thread to death, then you go after another one. -_-'

Seriously, how many of you went to the PS3 side and started a conversation there besides in the General Stuff forums?

Well I haven't really read through all the posts because there are too many, but in response to the OP...

I feel it's quite amazing that the PSP community has made it this far, especially with all the stability problems early on, the lack of creation tools in comparison to the PS3 version, and the sheer amount of time this game has been out for--it really has lasted quite awhile and still seems to be going on strong.

You'd be surprised, there probably are a lot more members than you think, especially those like me, who do not post much but regularly check the news section. I also use the level promotion section for when I went to pick up another batch of levels from the community moon, to get some decent levels to add to the "newest" community levels I like to download just to see what's out there, even though most are mediocre. I may not always take the time to respond to posts and give reviews, but I post on occasion when something piques my interest or if I bothered to make a level (only 1 so far haha).

Anyway, even if the PSP started to die soon, for me, I'd just see it as a great run and not lose sleep over it. If there is a LBP PSP 2, I'm sure that would revitalize the community, and even if there isn't one, it's been fun, and great new levels are still being published. I made an account for modnation racers central, thinking that would be like LBPC 2.0, but never even got to post because that PSP section died within a week or two due to lack of depth in the game itself. I think it just goes to show how good this game and community really is.

I agree with metsfan1025. I've been a [fairly] active member of both the PS3 and PSP sides of these forums, and good creators have come and gone but the community always stays persistent. It's completely true that the PSP side is wholly inferior to the PS3 Version(s) and that could be a reason why the support is waning, but it's also easier to create on the PSP version and a lot more gratifying in my opinion. I was always angry about the countless bugs in LBP PSP that never got fixed, but I could not stay away from the portable creating game for long.

I really hope a LBP PSP2 is in the works, because it could really turn out great. But until then, I'll be trying to finish up the Space Temples Trilogy, and gearing up for LittleBigPlanet 2.

Great topic Fastbro! I've been without a computer for the last few days thanks to all my Christmas travels, so that is my excuse for replying so late (I just read the thread all the way through ).

To start out, I share the same fear that you have, though I never really thought that Taffey, Jeff, and I were indicators of how the PSP community is doing (and if we are, then just look at the fact that Taffey and Jeff are still pumping out Community Spotlights, and Taffey and I are still doing Creator Spotlights. I would think that that would show that we are strongly behind PSP, even if we currently don't have time to make levels).

I am actually under the impression that the PSP community is very strong. I must admit that I have not been able to play as many new levels as I would like, but considering that all of my levels (except Shallow Springs) have been pushed off of page 1 of Highest rated, and most have been pushed off of page 2 in the last few months, it seems to me that we are actually having a large influx of great levels unless everyone is just rating levels 5 stars for fun now The Right Stuffing and Zen have even been pushed off of page 1!

I would figure that this bodes well for the PSP community, right? It means that other authors are making levels that are being accepted as better than the levels by Taffey, Jeff, and me. While this might be a bit disheartening for me since levels like Greenie Go Home couldn't even make it to page 3, it shows that people are making levels that are being enjoyed by a lot of people, and isn't that what the community needs?

Either way, I have wondered the same thing as you Fastbro. If you listen to episode 2 of PocketMoonPodcast then you will hear Taffey and I discussing this very point. I leaned more toward doom and gloom while he is very positive (I'm guessing that both of us are actually more in the gray area, but it makes a better discussion if you take opposite sides).

well, ive got a PS3 now, along with LBP, but i would never leave my psp or the psp side for that matter. I have made a few mates over on the psp side and i aint gonna be leaving in a hurry.

Besides, the PSPers are special as some of us can create beautiful levels with low graphics and a limited create system. The PS3 version is good, yes brilliant in fact but i think of it more as holiday villa whereas the PSP side is my true home....

ThankYou *Wipes eyes*
