Anyone else gonna see the Lunar Eclipse?

Archive: 76 posts

Showtime for the lunar eclipse
After weeks of buildup, it's finally time to go outside and see the full moon go dark - or, if it's cloudy, watch the total lunar eclipse over the Internet.

Darn in, was gonna post about this! >_<
Yeah...a rare eclipse, happening the same day as Winter Solstice, hasn't happened since about 200 of 400 something years if I recall corectly.
Won't hapen again until about 209X I think.

So...yeah, big event.

Starts I believe at 12:15am on Central time, no?
Will end at about 4am, and full eclipse at 2:45am?

Must be a lucky sign that it's occurring on my birthday. I feel special.

Really is an amazing thing. Share what it's like if you guys see it. I'll be long asleep by then and it's far too cold to go outside...

When it in NZ? If it is

You could watch it on live streams, there's a lot seting them up right about now, exactly for those who can't see it for w/e reason, (except if its because you're asleep fo course. ) and you can see videos of it tomorrow if you can't today.

As for here we're recording it!

LOL
Its an eclipse, i'll see another one in 2014. A solstice? I experience 2 of those a year.
Just because they are happening at the same time doesn't mean ****.

You think the eclipse is so amazing? Take a picture now and then and compare, they'll look the same.
You're going to experience more in your lifetime, a rock blocking the light from a ball of gas isn't special.

@LWBear; Congrats on getting a double post kill streak. Your care package is waiting.

I don't get the "ZOMG THIS IS DOUBLE RAINBOW MEETS PUDDI MEETS CHUCK NORRIS MEETS PIE" reactions people are dishin' out, it's the moon going dark, then lighting back up.

It's a rooooooooooooock. A roooooooooooooock. It would have made sense if you would have said 'simple' things in life, but a rock going from glowy, to not glowy, to glowy again, is not pretty IMO.

Well, without this roooooooooooock you seem to underestimate, this is what the world would be:
1. The day would be eight hours long.
2. The winds would be much stronger.
3. Complex life might not exist yet.
4. When life did arrive, it would have a different biology.

So we come here to see something scientifically interesting that only happens once every X years, and then Brem comes along to burst everyone's bubble and start an argument...Was that really needed? I'm not estimating the value of the moon, i'm estimating the value of your intelligence.
You said it only happens every 300-500 years. When it CLEARLY happens every 4 years, with the next one being in 2014.

So apparently, your mathematical skills are off.

Actually, the last lunar eclipse on a solstice occurred 400 years ago.

*456 to be exact.

Oh, and remember a lot of users on this site are kids. And even the ones that aren't don't want their mood to be ruined. You wouldn't walk up to a kid playing with some new toys on christmas and say "That's a bit rubbish, and they'll probably break soon anyway. Also, your parents didn't pay much for them."

There is really no need, nor anything productive, friendly, funny or nice about pulling everyone out of their good moods and telling them they're being stupid for admiring something beautiful.

But, whatever helps you sleep at night, Bremnen.

Yea dayne, I know their ages, they are 14-15 years old, a few younger(very few).
When you hit puberty, an eclipse shouldn't be amazing anymore.

Morgana isn't a kid, Foofles isn't a kid, Silverleon isn't a kid... Just because we find it interesting doesn't mean you have to.

And don't think you offended me with your little comment, I already tell kids they are spoiled when they ask/get stuff for christmas since all they ask for is expensive stuff, go check the christmas thread so you can make me a bad guy from that if you want.

Offend you?! Ha! It'll take nothing short of time travelling ghosts to make scrooge see sense. Although even with the mightiest logic you wouldn't be able to make a troll see it.

And don't try and correct me.
I said 300-500 because that's what everyone else has been saying, sorry I didn't google the exact date like you.

I didn't google it. They mentioned it on the news. I'm sorry for trying to back up someone from your relentless rain of hate.

As for me, I find eclipses very interesting. I find sunsets interesting. In fact I find most things interesting, despite the fact I'm almost 41 years old! Those of you who like to see the magic in nature and the world around us, please continue to discuss. Those who don't - take your negativity and move along Before anyone else decides to post anything derogatory, please consider the following: Who are you to tell another person what they can and can't find beautiful or fascinating?

As I expected it was too cloudy to see anything from my home. I haz a sad nao. Loving the pictures and videos of it though.

About all the drama - disappointed would be the word I'd choose. Not that you guys that aren't into this aren't into this but that you choose to ridicule anyone who is and post in a thread that you clearly have no interest in the topic.

Astronomy and the goings on of the Universe is not small potatoes and not just something little kids find wonder and amazement in. Looking up at the night sky, looking at photos from Hubble and thinking of how small we are in an infinite universe are as close to spiritual experiences as I can get. I'd hope people would respect that just cuz they aren't into it doesn't mean it's not significant for some of us.

I wanted to see it and thought of staying up a bit longer. However upon looking outside, it was snowing and completely overcast and no chance at all to see anything except the sky become dimmer and then brighter.

I was really bummed as I love to see events such as these..

Non-teen reporting in:

It was a beautiful crystal clear cold nite. The type of full moon light that can trick you into thinking the moon is daylighting... [or is that versa-visca?] Cool unwordly blueish white hues... Then of course-- caught complete unaware's the skies went dark. The Moon turned blood red... then black. My God has been angered. I have lost my mind. All my rage and misfortune must be heaped on the head of an innocent to slaughter. I must appease my mistress! A sacrifice.

No- Nothing of interest here Bremnen. Go about your day (and/ or night) unaware... It'll be easier that way.

Of course, you're hardly innocent though are you?:hrmf:

Sure, the chat went of topic as [censored], but hey.

Hey gaiz, guess wut?

The eclipse is ovar, we can drop this subject nao.

Astro can't read, as usual.

Inan is correct, argument is over, eclipse is over, move along.

Actually, we partially recorded it here (not continuously, we recorded a while, then stopped for a bit, then checked again about every 20 mins.)
May be able to get it into may PS3 and Upload it, for those who missed it.

So, do NOT move along quite yet!

*sigh*

Using the logic put forward by Bremnen and Inanimacy, once an event is over it is no longer up for discussion? So does that mean we can't discuss movies we've seen in the past or LBP levels we've played or created in the past? Come on

The only reason I'm not locking this is because the derailment has not been by those who have a genuine interest. I don't usually do this kind of thing publicly, but let me make this very clear. Bremnen and Inanimacy - GO AWAY from this thread. You clearly have no desire to add to the discussion, so please do not. That is my final warning.

Sorry to be off topic myself. Go ahead and discuss the wonders of the universe. Anyone got some footage to post from last night? It didn't happen here.. moon was white - although I was tired and didn't sit up for very long.

EDIT: About the deleted posts below - Posting fake agreements or hidden arguments does not constitute valid posts in this thread. And the defiance of my request has been dealt with
