80gb ps3?
Archive: 37 posts
Hey! My Father is going to get a PS3 for me and the family, but he wants to get the 80GB because of Backward Compatibility. Now, I've heard that the 80GB model of the PS3 has bugs or something. Hence they discontinued it. So, I was wondering if you guys know if the 80GB PS3 has bugs, and if so, what kind? If the bugs are too drastic then I'll try to convince him not to get the 80GB model. I'd also appreciate it if you could state the model of PS3 YOU are using. You know, just gotta know which perspective your post comes from. My father is going to buy the Bc 80GB PS3 off the inernet. Please, no more comments stating to get a PS2 and a PS3. That is out of the question. Also: Does the 80GB PS3 have an overheating problem? Ahem, ALL USEFULL POSTS WILL BE THANKED Thanks! in advance. | 2010-12-21 00:07:00 Author: The-Questor Posts: 1328 |
Basically all I know is that the 80 gig has some problems playing some PS2 games... rendering some games unbeatable. Plus it's a LOT more expensive. /40 gigger | 2010-12-21 00:08:00 Author: RockSauron Posts: 10882 |
320 Gigs is the way to go. | 2010-12-21 00:13:00 Author: Unknown User |
The 80 gigs that could play PS2 games were the first batch from 2 years ago, they dont make them anymore. Any store bought ps3 will not play ps2 games. No matter what gig it is. @Rock 80gig costs $299 the 160gig is the expensive one /common knowledge | 2010-12-21 00:13:00 Author: Bremnen Posts: 1800 |

Well 320 really seems better than all of them (Well of course, duh) But the bundle comes with the Move and a game. So it's like your paying for a 160 gig and the Move, and the other Gigs on the PS3 are free. Or at least that's how I see it. | 2010-12-21 00:19:00 Author: Unknown User |
Ah yes, that's right, when we say 80 gig it needs to be an OLD 80 gigger... http://www.amazon.com/Playstation-3-80-GB-Backwards-Compatible/dp/B0011DNQLK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1292891026&sr=8-3 Quick amazon search. They're all very used so it's just... yeah. I'd REALLY recommend just buying a new PS3. They're new, they're the same price, they have more gigs, they' come with stuff. Plus the 80 gig just is glitchy and stuff. so yeah, I'd just get a new ps3 if I were you, and get a PS2 if you REALLY wanted to play PS2 games... | 2010-12-21 00:26:00 Author: RockSauron Posts: 10882 |
eh, the 80 gigger huh? used to have one... lasted 2 years! and then it started overheating quickly, stopped reading disks... and all sorts of crap, now ihave the 120... and just transfered my data, much better now | 2010-12-21 00:26:00 Author: theswweet Posts: 2468 |
Yeah, buying from a store, you won't be able to find any more PS2-compattible PS3s. Also, many (most?) 80Gb PS3s aren't backward ompatible either, I used to have a 80GB, bought it about 2 years ago, wouldn't play any of the many PS2 games I had. Your best bet would be to find any 60GB or lower PS3s, or if you want for Backward compatibility only, you can always just buy a cheap-'ol PS2, and a slim PS3 for PS3 stuff. (Used to own 80GB Fat PS3, Currently own 250GB Slim PS3.) | 2010-12-21 00:53:00 Author: Silverleon Posts: 6707 |

I'm asking about the bugs of the PS3 80GB, not which PS3 I should get. Sawwy. Plus the 80 gig just is glitchy and stuff. See, like what kind of Glitchy? REALLY Glitchy? Or Faintly Glitchy? eh, the 80 gigger huh? used to have one... lasted 2 years! and then it started overheating quickly, stopped reading disks... and all sorts of crap. That's discouraging. Was it the Backward Compatible one? | 2010-12-21 00:57:00 Author: The-Questor Posts: 1328 |
Try a happy medium maybe and look for a 60GB? Although they're kinda rare to come across these days aaaaaaaand my one broke. >: ( On second thoughts, why not just go for a new model and leave the PS2 games for the PS2? | 2010-12-21 01:02:00 Author: Mr_T-Shirt Posts: 1477 |

Well, it only has a .5% failure rate. And thats for 2 years so....no real need to worry. Most of that .5% was the first batch(the one you're looking for) | 2010-12-21 01:12:00 Author: Bremnen Posts: 1800 |
I honestly don't think you can get the 80GB B/C models any more, unless you buy a used one (or happen to find some store that just uncovered an old dusty case of them down in their basement). That said, we have had our 80GB B/C PS3 (with 4 USB ports) since Christmas, 2008. We've seen no evidence of any glitches and it has played every PS2 game we own without any trouble. It is a fantastic machine. We've also not had any overheating issues (we keep it outside the regular entertainment center, standing up tower-style, and slightly away from the wall. Dunno if that has made any difference to the overheating issue, but it's always been my belief). We paid $600 for it new. Now you can get twice the HD for half the price. But no B/C, no flash card reader and only two USB ports. The only truly consistent force in the universe is change. | 2010-12-21 01:16:00 Author: v0rtex Posts: 1878 |
What Happened to your 80GB PS3? Did it brake? OOH! OP Update. Oh, no, I took really good care of it, cleaning it daily and such (can't really afford a new one. XD) so it lasted me, I traded it in on that "$200 for any PS3" offer they haad a while back, I knew that's the most I was getting for it, so I traded it in, and got the one I have atm. (But tbh, I doubt it would have lasted me 1/2 more, another reason why I traded it in. ) PS3 Slim takes A LOT less electricity, its waaaay quieter, les prone to crashing, and easier to maintaining, so I would reccomdn just getting that instead if you got the option. | 2010-12-21 01:20:00 Author: Silverleon Posts: 6707 |
@All 3 of the Posts Below: Finally! Some posts that didn't end in: "It only lasted me 2 years." Well, it only has a .5% failure rate. And thats for 2 years so....no real need to worry. Most of that .5% was the first batch(the one you're looking for) Ah, so the later batch of the 80GB PS3s are the better ones? Please, no more comments stating to get a PS2 and a PS3. That is out of the question. Sorry to bring it up again but if this is just personal preference then I wouldn't be too quick to rule it out. I've had the original 60GB version since release. I kept it well ventilated and cleaned it a couple of times a year. It got the YLOD just a couple of weeks back, so it's lasted 3 years roughly and probably would have lasted longer with more regular cleaning. In the end it overheated while playing a DVD's, they always seemed to make it run very hard and quite hot, games didn't have the same effect. I'm now getting the 320GB Slim for Christmas and for all my PS2 games I'm just going to bring the ol' PS2 back out. Apart from the excessive heat while playing DVD's the only bug I experienced was, while playing PS2 games, the textures would look wrong as if they were the negative image. This didn't happen often though and when it did it was only for a split second. IMO it's a gamble buying an older version of a PS3, especially a pre-owned one as most would be, you may get a great one that will last you or you be looking at buying another PS3 not to long in the future. EDIT: btw I always had me PS3 lying flat, and I live in a very hot, dusty and humid climate. Every electronic item ends up getting dust in it that then glues itself to the components because of the humidity just read your above post as well. | 2010-12-21 01:54:00 Author: SR20DETDOG Posts: 2431 |

THIS IS SERIOUS MAN!!! Does your PS3 ctash/ freeze often? Do you leave it on for long periods of time? Do you clean it often, making sure the Vents are as dust-free as possible? Have you accidentally damaged it lately? (geting hit/ frpping, etc.) If your answeres match any of the following: Yes Yes No Yes Then you may wanna think on getting it replaced soon, m8. | 2010-12-21 12:39:00 Author: Silverleon Posts: 6707 |

The relevance of whether or not it plays PS2 games is because that's the version of PS3 their talking about that has a tendency to burn out. i've cleaned my 60GB launch date PS3 once when it broke, and it has never broken for a period of more than an hour. It's backwards compatible mostly, there's a couple of games (like most of the ratchet and clank series) that lag horribly on it though. | 2010-12-21 22:53:00 Author: resistance1 Posts: 812 |
Not sure what effect it might have but I always leave mine on standy. Gently whispering "I love you" every once in a while also helps. And I mean I've had 0% problems that weren't caused by the game itself.....I love you PS3 Enjoy your new PS3 | 2010-12-21 22:59:00 Author: MrFunctionality Posts: 637 |
I would recommend ether the 20GB PS3 or the 40GB PS3, and then buying a bigger HDD for it (e.g. 80GB, 160GB, 320GB, or 500GB I would go with the 40GB PS3 and get a 500GB HDD for it) Right now I own the 160GB Stock PS3 and I regret asking my dad to get this one and not the the 80GB =( Anyways happy buying 40GB PS3 *MINT* = Here (http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-PlayStation-3-40-GB-Black-NEW-SONY-/330510785723?pt=Video_Games&hash=item4cf3fa5cbb#ht_1011wt_1139) 500GB PS3 HDD *NEW* = Here (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136692) | 2010-12-21 23:00:00 Author: chinook3 Posts: 453 |

As far as I know, it was the 60GB that had the backwards compatability, and 4 USB slots etc. 250GB Slim is the way forward though | 2010-12-21 23:35:00 Author: TehUberZac Posts: 587 |
What does that mean? It means positioning the ps3 like so...... http://benchmarkreviews.com/images/articles/2008_Year_In_Review/Sony_PlayStation_3_Gaming_Console.jpg Come on now..... | 2010-12-21 23:48:00 Author: MrFunctionality Posts: 637 |

Kind of answers itself.... As far as I know, it was the 60GB that had the backwards compatability, and 4 USB slots etc. 250GB Slim is the way forward though Is the 250GB Backward Compatable? If not then.... | 2010-12-23 18:03:00 Author: The-Questor Posts: 1328 |
20 GB CECHBxx 60 GB CECHAxx Are the models with full backwards compatability. 80 GB CECHExx Is a model that is mostly backwards compatable with some PS2 games running poorly or not at all. All BC PS3's will have 4 USB ports. The older models of PS3 are more prone to overheating issues due to them using more power to run and therefore generating more heat in the system. I know the newer models are not relevant to your interests but my newer 250 GB slim runs much quieter and cooler than my old 60 GB ever did. | 2010-12-23 19:26:00 Author: Rabid-Coot Posts: 6728 |
