Archive: 64 posts

The 1st map pack titled "First Strike" has it's first details.
It's 4 new MP maps & a new zombie map.
Discovery - Antarctic German research station, abandoned from World War II.
Kowloon – Inspired from the single-player campaign based off of Kowloon city in China. It's a rooftop map.
Stadium – Hockey rink in northeastern United States. (Have a feeling this is gonna annoy people)
Berlin Wall – Takes place at Checkpoint Charlie. Is a battle between East and West Berlin.
Ascension - Zombie map.
Release date -
360 - 1/2/2011
PC - TBA
PS3 - TBA
It will cost $15 (1200 MS points)Probably €15.
In case you missed it, MS signed a deal with Activision to have CoD packs released on 360 first, up to 2012.

Cool, new Map Pack! Treyarch still has to fix the server issues I've been seeing other people experience lately. (Come on, you think Activision's got enough money already!)
Hmmmm, Discovery sounds like its based off the Project Nova level, but which part, I wonder?
The rooftop part in Kowloon makes me think of Highrise from Modern Warfare 2.
Stadium, sounds interesting to me, like Killhouse from the Call of Duty 4 Variety Map Pack.
Berlin Wall, I'm wondering what they are gonna make of this map?
Ascension, its gonna get Activision more money, I'll probably want to buy it too though, I can't have enough of new maps for Zombies.

I always think of Activision (the C.E.O. mostly) going: "Money! More money for me! STAY AWAY THIS IS MINE!!". It is Activision's fuel: Greed.

I was hoping Activision and Treyarch would be nice to us and give us the map packs for $10 or $12. Guess that's not happening.

I think I'll hold off until the two-pack combo purchase.

Still 1200 MSP?

That is being shown to be terrible value um... today, actually.

BF: Vietnam expansion for BFBC2 - 4 maps (+1 unlockable from community challenge) and they are already matching CoD. The maps are also bigger and better... Then you get 15 new guns from the era, 6 new vehicles, new character models, 2 hours of music from the era... For he same price as 4 maps?

I prefer BFBC2, but i would have paid for the CoD maps if they were more reasonably priced. But for the same reason I haven't got the MW2 maps, I won't have these.

CoD=?15 for 4 maps (Based on campaign) and new zombie map.
BC2=?10 for 4 new maps, new guns & vehicles, music & trophies.
I think Activison need to look at themselves

& I bet you any money that the CoD map-pack outsells the BF:V add-on by at least 2 to 1.

So yeah, Activision will look at themselves and think "How can we extract even MORE money from these idiots?"
And the CoD fanboys will line up - wallet in hand - ready to bend over to Bobby Kotick and get shafted

Probably. Then I'll gameshare from a CoD fanboy just to play the zombies
What's the betting that Activision employees have solid gold, diamond encrusted fridges?

The share-holders and CEO certainly.
But the creative talent that actually makes the games for activision are treated like 2nd class citizens, they've been cutting team numbers left right and centre and convincing them all that their jobs are on the line, blaming it on the global recession & enforcing an air of fear, pessimism and skepticism on the devs.
Despite the fact the gaming industry is one of the few industries that is seen as "recession proof" - and Activision rake in Billions profit per quater annum.

Like I always thought, Activision is greedy. I'll list what I think to be their fuel source, their drive:
----------
Greed.
Need for money.
To be the richest in the world.
Possession of unsurpassed amounts of cash.
To hold unbelievable quantities of moolah.
To have a movement-freezing number of bags containing cash-ola.
----------
As you can see, these all point to the same thing: Greed. They are successful because of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Call of Duty 6: Modern Warfare 2. Call of Duty 7: Black Ops. Not so sure about Call of Duty 5: World At War, though, the most successful ones are not set during World War II, if I remember correctly. Though I'll admit, I'll keep wanting to buy Call of Duty games, I will never think good of Activision, unless they somehow get rid of their greed and start to treat their staff properly.

Activision know that among the people that complain, many people will still buy it.

I, however, will not be one of those people.

Lets say at $10 a cod map pack sells to 1 million people thats $10,000,000 in revenue.

At $15 they have to alienate over a third of the map pack buyers for it to be a bad idea.

666667 people buy that $15 map pack and its $10,000,005 in revenue.

66666 people buy that $15 map pack and its $9,999,990 in revenue.

Exactly, why charge you $10, when they can charge you $15 for the exact same content?

That's Activision in a nutshell.

It doesn't cost nothing to make, and what about the stores they put it on? Surely Sony and Microsoft charge for use of those? Even so, they could still eaisly make a lot from it.

the Real World

I hate that place! It smells of urine.

Value is a weird thing though... for instance - I can remember my Dad going out and buying himself PGA Pro Tour Golf for the Sega Master System - and it cost ?40.

Here we are 20 years later - and Console games still cost ?40 (or less). Where everything else has gone up in price - the cost of games has relatively fallen.

It's psychological.
The "cost" and the "value" of something are two seperate things.

As you say, it boils down to what we are 'willing' to pay, not what it actually costs.
I, for one, am not willing to pay that exorbitant price - and if everyone felt the same as me, they would lower the price.

It doesn't cost nothing to make,

Yeah, programmers and artists just need coffee and the occasional biscuit to keep them going....

@macnme: you're right, I probably should have said "cost", though maybe not - I get confused where these terms get used - business speak is all waffle and bull**** anyways - as long as you look like you know what you're saying you can get away with it But of course, the problem is down to the people who are willing to pay for it and there are a lot of those people. But then, remember that these are luxury items... As with all luxuries, if you don't want them enough to pay the asking price, then so be it. I can't justify the cost of a solid gold toilet (believe me I've checked), so I just get on with my life and make do with porcelain!

As for the games prices, I think mass production and andvances in development paradigms have helped there... But it's remarkable how much more you get for your ?40 nowadays... yet still people think games are over-priced!

I am just talking about revenue genetated at the two price points and how much of the dlc audience would have to be put off by the extra $5 before the price point would result in less revenue being generated.

Unfortunatly I don't have the indepth information on their expenses that need to be taken off to calculate the profit/loss that they would be making on the dlc but the only expense I can see altering between the two price points is the royalties paid to the platform holders.

Game prices haven't gone down I remember when you could get a game for ?30 and that was only a few years ago and now it's ?40 and and without naming names *cough COD* some games RRP are ?50. If anything they have gone skywards... anyway I won't be getting the map pack considering Black Ops is well, how can i put this S**T!.
BFBC2 Vietnam FTW! Not only is it cheaper but it comes out earlier as well with more content, triple win?

For calendar year 2010, Activision expects earnings per diluted share of $0.72 on net revenues of $4.2 billion (?2.9b).

Cost to develop Black Ops = reputedly $18 - $28 million

Prices have gone up and down over the years, my copy of Street Fighter 2 on the Mega Drive has the receipt in the box and it was ?40. In the PS1 era PS1 games were about ?30 and N64 stuff was ?50-60. During the PS2 era games had a ?40 RRP but the rise of online retailers got us a ?10 discount bringing us back to only paying ?30. In the current generation almost everything has a ?50 RRP but we still get a ?10 discount thanks to the online retailers COD has a RRP of ?55 with ?43 being the discounted price.

I myself paid ?22 for my new copy of BlackOps (on special offer and also got some money off the final total) - I don't even think you can buy it wholesale much cheaper than that - the supermarket must've been making a loss on the sale.

Which is why I consider paying half that again, just for a couple of maps, to be a bit rich (a bit rich.. see what I did there? I crack myself up)

I mean, the only thing my relatives ever buy me for holidays are PSN cards. Got $120 last year.

It's the only time I ever give Activision my money. I got Black Ops for free.

If you don't think it's worth buying, don't buy it.

To be honest, Treyarch is kind of greedy too.

Activision sells their map packs to meet consumer standards (in a way), and their profit line. World At War was very likely to have failed making any profit had Nazi Zombies not been included in there. Since then, Treyarch developed Nazi Zombies maps one at a time, so people bought their maps no matter how much they cost, simply because they wanted only one map: the Nazi Zombies maps. That's why they always sold the DLC with 3 online maps and 1 Nazi Zombies map, just to persuade the consumer it was a good deal when it really wasn't.

So right now, they're pretty much doing the same thing: 3 maps and 1 Zombie map. Majority of the community will probably play the Zombie map first. I know I would. Right now, I'm liking online, so I might get it. But to be honest, I think it should be at least $10. The tax that goes along with it already annoys me.

I spent less money on Minecraft, which is infinitely better than the full game of Black Ops. That makes it seems silly.

But in the end, I'm probably going to buy the map pack anyways.

For me; better game > maps, but unfortunately for most companies; money > community needs.

You don't know what goes on inside Treyarch's company or Activision.

Activision is the big boss, they tell Treyarch what to do, whether it be telling them to add another zombie map or leave it at one. The finalization has to be done by Activision. Therefore it's much more Activision's greediness then Treyarch's. I wouldn't be surprised if Treyarch actually wanted to add more to the DLC but Activision didn't approve of it.

http://media2.abc15.com//photo/2010/10/19/$8_million_iPhone_20101019120440_320_240.JPG

Like RTM said, all of this is a luxury. No body NEEDS more DLC, no body NEEDS to play video games. Therefore whether your paying 15 dollars for 4-5 maps, or paying 8 million dollars for a iPhone covered in diamonds, it's your choice, however the luxury will always be there.

TBH my brother spends most of his time on zombies, I spend most my time on multiplayer. 4 (Very awesome sounding) Maps for me and a Zombie map for him is well worth the money.

Obviously some people only play the Zombies and it is a bit of a cop out DLC for them, but remember if they buy a game full of content and they only use 1 part of that content then they probably don't mind only using a fifth of their DLC. It would be poor business strategy for them to market two separate DLC packs when they can join the content together and increase the price.

Also I think the Black Ops DLC is better than the MW2 map packs since they aren't throwing in a remake map. Although some remake W@W maps might be pretty fun XD

You or your brother, or WHOEVER plays it on our account... Should add my private account. "KlawwTheClown." Just saying.

Anyway, on subject of the cost, just think if it's worth it. I mean, it's hours of entertainment, and still cheaper than pizza, or McDonald's (for my family anyway), which lasts about 20 seconds.

Berlin Wall
The largest of the new maps prominently features its namesake, bisecting the map (there's a hole players can cross through) and essentially pitting East vs. West. There are plenty of tall buildings offering good spots for snipers. The most promising feature is an area called "No Man's Land." This big open space offers a shortcut, but provides no cover and is guarded by automated turrets. Pro tip: Run fast.

Discovery
A large map set in the Antarctic at an abandoned German outpost from World War II. A seemingly bottomless chasm separates the map. The catch? The icy bridges that lead players over the chasm can be blown up. Yes, you have an all new use for your C4.

Kowloon
You might remember visiting here from the single-player campaign, but the area was rebuilt completely for multiplayer. Olin promises a lot of verticality in the map. To help get around, Kowloon is the first and only map to offer ziplines. You'll get down to lower areas quickly, but you're completely exposed on the zipline. You know there will be campers waiting to pick off anyone who takes the risk -- so be smart about using these.

Stadium
The smallest map in First Strike, Stadium is still going to be bigger than something like Nuketown. Even though it's mid-sized compared to the full Black Ops offering, there's not a lot of open space. Sorry snipers! Stadium is for close-quarters combat. Olin advises players equip motion sensors or tactical insertion in any objective-based modes.

Zombies Mode Map - Ascension
Set in an "abandoned Soviet cosmodrome," Ascension features the regular cast of Zombies players (Takeo, Nikoli, Dempsey, and Rictoffen). But it does include new enemies, including Space Monkeys who steal perks. Uh.... what? New weapons include the Gersch Device or "Black Hole Bomb" and Matryoshka Dolls. Those ****ed dirty monkeys will be swiping new perks that include Stamin-Up and PhD Flopper, the benefits of which we're not quite sure.

It is hard to get much more play time out of CoD, as it is just re skinned/named every year Take a few years break, and call me when you've made it different from the rest, Activision

I thought this, and right now I can honestly say I have no intention of picking up the next one... but then I'll start getting sucked in by the hype machine and that will suddenly become "I won't get it full price at release" and then before you know it I've preordered and I'm at a midnight launch

Wow, and the update even said right on the menu, during those little scrolling messages:

"First strike map pack releases Fabruary 1st 2011"

On the PS3 version.

I know they said 360 was getting it first, but they didn't need to taunt the PS3 side with that message, like really Treyarch?

On another note... ZOMBIES!

Still wanna see the Black Hole Bomb thing, and the Dolls though.

Both multiplayer maps and the zombie map looks awesome. If it only wasn't that expensive... 2011-01-26 13:31:00

btw, just so everybody knows black ops was published by treyarch, not activision or infinity ward

EDIT: sorry, I read the first page where everyone was under the impression that black ops was published by activision.

Wonder what music will play on the new map when the musical easter egg is activated. 2011-01-27 10:27:00

The name of this map's song may be called "Abracadavre", because on PC the Game Over music filename is "mus_gameover_abracadavre".

And yeah, I'm assuming that's the name of the song, and we know it'll have the same intro as the game over song on Kino Der Toten. (Because the Verruckt one was in Nacht Der Untoten, the Shi No Numa one was in Verruckt, the Der Riese one was in Shi no Numa, and the Kino Der Toten one was in Der Riese.)

It's only a matter of the full song, now.

By the way, the Bowie Knife is gone now. Replaced with a sickle, if you hadn't heard already.

That looks sick, even though I don't usually buy the bowie knife (unless I already got a ballistic knife).
Now all we need is a hammer.

Oh, on this advertising poster...

It seems to show some cool stuff. Particularly...

-No Richtofen? There's some new dude. Unless he's been working out.
-Dempsey's holding the Wunderwaffe DG-2?
-And a sickle. Showoff.
-They're all holding wonder weapons: Ray Gun, Winter's Howl, Thundergun/Gersch Device, Wunderwaffe.
-They look older, like usual.
-Gas zombies return

From the trailer, I could've sworn I saw Richtofen, though...
