Quicksand! D:

Archive: 17 posts

XD so I had an idea strike me today that I might end up using as an idea on one of my levels.

Basically, quicksand (or slime, or a tarpit, or anything your little heart desires) MIGHT be do-able, via a huge amount of small spheres (probably sponge spheres). Upon trying to cross the pit, Sackboy might sink down. This wouldn't be lethal in itself, but if you had poison gas at the bottom, that could signify someone drowning (or suffocating) when they go too deep.

Totally something I'm going to do for one of my level/series-of-levels ideas. ^^

Wow sounds like a good idea, but it would look kinda weird. They should just add it as a danger in a patch or something.2008-11-05 00:50:00

sounds like a decent idea. my one concern is that it would be probably impossible to really make sure it was difficult but always doable. i could see the small spheres often arranging themselves such that no matter what you did you couldn't get across. thus is the problem with physics based games. doesn't always go exactly as you want. but if you give it a try, let us know. i'm curious to see the result.2008-11-05 01:37:00

you yould make the sinking work a little better with a hold that opens in the bottom of the pit, activated at a certain point by a player proximity switch, by the way, anyone notice it looks like a little cute spider? anyways, that way it would make sinking more efficient. otherwise, it would be way to easy to jusy jump alot to get across2008-11-05 02:29:00

wouldnt work....i think...anyway the sponges will crush each other but im thinking extremely small layers of dissolve material, and then a sand looking material on the C4 layer. The very very front layer.2008-11-05 05:17:00

Heh, I just tried your way and the results were....interesting. Other than the terrible lag and the fact that the thermometer filled up almost instantly, it worked rather well. It was pretty loud too. If you make the particles small enough, they actually pass through each other, it's weird.2008-11-08 01:38:00

i tried it and i sank ok but if u jump all the time you get across2008-11-08 20:35:00

a simple aproach would be using a pice of whatever that sinks when you stand on it ( sensor switch) and comes up by jumping. you would have to calibrate it so that if the player rushes over it he dies but if he constantly jumps he would JUUUUUST make it.
below youd need like gas-hazard and to cover it all oud just plaze a layer of something to the very front and paint it with what you like ( i instantly think of a skelleton peeking throu the sand :-P )

Ironically, today, I was thinking just the opposite, but identical to what Shanmuir was thinking... I've been trying to figure out how to make a 'Flooding" room... and Shan's idea was what exactly came to mind... the floor slowly rises as the material below it (water or water-like material) fills up in the thin layer in front of you. (if the "floor" gets to the ceiling before you get out... squishy (drowned!)

So I think it would work exactly the same the other way around for quicksand... floor that goes down (into a lethal contraption), with a 'sand' sticker in front of it...

make a floor of float in place material and hide it behind a thin peice of wood.

use loose elastic if you have to, but when the player walks across, he'll only see his head going down behind the wood and not know that the float material is under his feet.

i like this idea cuz it creates the illusion of sinking plus you could put gas under so you could die

you could make very thin layers of dissolve, and when someone steps in it, they start deleting, one by one, excpet there is a sandy cover infront, so as to appear to be "sinking" when your actually falling slowly...2008-11-15 04:04:00

Sounds like a cool idea. But it may be a little hard to make. Such as using dissolve to make it sink or something. Anyway, cool idea. 2008-11-17 19:59:00

Exactly what I was thinking. Maybe have them dissolve via motion sensor, with the speed setting. (is there an impact setting/switch, because that would work great)

it depends just how small the spheres are and how many you have, because the game isn't fond of having to handle too much movement and physics to deal with 2008-11-30 13:38:00

Just wanted to let you guys know, I was very intrigued by this idea so I tried it, and surprisingly, it acts most like jelly. But here is the most interesting part: it SOUNDS like water, like the creators put in sound effects for when you make a bunch of small particles and put them together, because it sounds exactly like some sort of of muddy water. When you jump on it the particles behave very strange, like passing through each other and being crushed, and the game litterally lags to death, I had to restart my ps3 to get it to work again. But all in all, interesting and you should all try it .2008-12-13 22:11:00
