A Snake Question

Archive: 14 posts

OK, can anyone tell me what kind of snake this is? I am assuming it is a type of boa, but not sure. It is about 8 ft. long I believe. It is my roommate's snake. He owes me money for rent and utilities and has been gone since the 1st of Dec. and has yet to pay me even after i spoke with him several times at his work. It is to the point now where my student loan payment will be late, because he has not paid me, so I can't pay my own bills. So, I decided to take it upon myself to sell the snake for him, so I can get my money. Thanks in advance for your help.

I am not sure. I didn't try yet. I didn't want to sound like a total idiot when selling it, so I wanted to get as much info as possible. Plus, I don't want to get ripped off...not that it is my snake, but if I can get more money out of it, I sure will try.2010-12-16 22:45:00

How does it constrict its food?

Around the neck (boa) or body (python)?

Pythons and boas are hard to tell apart with the naked eye, and patterns vary within a species. If you brought it to an expert who might buy it, maybe he could identify it.

Also keep in mind that profits vary greatly. The ballpark price for an 8-foot common commercial snake like that one is $40-$120. It might sell for less.

Burmese pythons are one of the most common big constrictor pets in the US. I used to have one and don't see any reasons why that snake couldn't be a Burmese python.

How can you tell?

The patterns. I was sure it was a reticulated, but then I googled it and the patterns don't match. He didn't catch the thing so obviously it came from a pet store and the Buramese is a popular choice. Does it have a redtail? If so then a red tailed boa is what you have there.

Ya, I think it is a red tail. Oh, and he volunteers at a zoo, so it came from a zoo, not sure if that makes it worth more money lol.2010-12-16 23:42:00

R U Sure it came from a zoo? Zoos are not usually the type to give free samples of their products to their employees.2010-12-16 23:49:00
