US Versions Of UK TV Shows

Archive: 21 posts

Last night one of my friends linked me a clip from a US version of the British show "Shameless." I'll let you find it yourself, as it's VERY adult content, but I must ask why do the US TV networks always do this?

It must be a money thing right? "If it works in the UK it will work here!" mentality?

I understand that they want to make the shows relate to the US audience, but is it really so hard for the audience to watch the originals themselves?

The rest of the world watches many US shows without feeling lost, im sure the US public could embrace our media too without having to 'Americanize' it.......hmm maybe not.

Here are a couple of examples...

Top Gear

Why why why?

It saddens me that American TV companies have murdered so many of my favourite british comedies, but im hanging onto the hope that since shameless is gonna be an HBO production and made by the guy who did a few good dramas like ER and West Wing that they might not make such a wreck of shameless as other remakes have been2010-12-14 13:49:00

Some of it is the difference in how the shows are made. We generally do 6-8 episodes in a season and 2-3 seasons. If one of thease performs reasonably well in syndication over ther the big networks will want it on their main channels but they want more then what we make so they'll attemt their own with around 20 episodes per season and hope it'll do well enough to get 6 or more seasons.2010-12-14 14:08:00

Wow! I didn't know they even attempted that!

True, but I'd consider 'The Office' a success. Pretty much the only UK/US show that works, but isn't some god awful talent show!

I for one am glad Whose Line Is it Anyway came to the U.S. even though it was cancelled after a good couple of years.

Oh well, time for some more Whose Line Youtube videos!

Fair enough. They do it with movies too - I mean, not nessecarilly English to American movies but here's some recent examples:

Let the right one in (Spanish?)- Let me in (American)
Rec (Spanish I think) - Quarantine (American)
Rec 2 (Same as above) - (There'll probably be a Quarantine 2) (American)

Don't get me started on this subject. Theres also serious talk of an American version of the BAFTA award winning 'Misfits'.

Here's a perfect example of why America should NEVER be allowed to do it's own version of ANYTHING!

Shot? Wow.. kinda harsh for something that you can simply choose not to watch doncha think? lol

I have no idea why the US networks attempt to remake perfectly fine UK shows. but I am sure it has something to do with money. To me, I love Top Gear and to me there is only one version and thankfully, no one that I know of ever tried to make a US version of Monty Python. lol

Have you watched it though?
I think a summary execution would be disproportionate, in that they deserve much, MUCH worse

Maybe a few months being tortured first (by making them watch it, again & again)

There's been a few Multi Doctor stories on anniversaries but I havn't seen those so I can't comment on their quality. Time Crash worked but I'd put that down to it being short.
