Cog problems

Archive: 4 posts

I'm having a hard time using the 4 cogs from the story rewards. I can attach them to a surface using free-spinning bolts and one with a motor bolt. But they keep "catching" on each other, especially when I ramp up the speed. I think it has to do with the teeth being perfectly square as opposed to the teeth on a real gear having a more trapezoidal shape. So the hard edges keep just ever so slightly catching each other as the teeth intertwine and the cog ends up sticking.

Anyone have any tips for using the cogs?

no it is just that it is nearly impossible to center a motor bolt or whatever bolt directly in the center and because of that they become uneaven and do not work

i have had problems with this too, do not worry about it and think of another way to do whatever you are doing, as it is nearly impossible

Cheers!

i haven't tried using the cogs yet, but i have found that the bolts do seem to "lock" to the center of an object when you go to place them. when you drag them around looking for where you want to stick them down, they seem to jump into place right at (what i assume) is the center of the object. has anyone else noticed this? or is it perhaps not as exact as one might hope (thus causing problems with cogs)?2008-11-04 23:03:00

The bolts do seem to move on their own when you try to place them and doesn't always hit the middle, which is EXTREMELY annoying sometimes. They don't seem to move on their own when you have the grid turned off, though, so try this out:

First off, make sure you're using grid mode as much as possible when you create stuff, otherwise, sometimes it can be nearly impossible to center things like bolts.

So create a cog in medium or large grid mode. Make sure its nice and even with the grid.

Now go to your tools and select your motor bolt. Before you put it anywhere, switch the grid down a level. So if you were on the Big grid, switch down to the medium grid. If you were on the Medium, switch to the Small grid.

You should now be able to center it perfectly on your cog.

I haven't tried messing with gears, as I don't completely understand the purpose of gears other than just looking awesome when they spin. My guess is that if all the cogs are powered by motors, then it would increase the strength of whatever you're powering with each cog, but I'm slowly learning physics just through playing this game. : )

If the cogs are there more for decoration, just power one with a motor bolt and 10.0 tightness, and use regular bolts on the others with 0.0 tightness. I think this should solve the problem.
