Gyro

Not a gyroscope per se, but a device which can detect whether an object is tilted forward or backward and apply appropriate corrective action to bring the object back to a level orientation. In the beta I had experimented creating such a device to keep a rocket-equipped rectangle in a "hovering" position. The basic device was a hollowed-out square with two magnetic key switches on either side and a round piece of orange floaty material inside with a magnetic key attached to it. When the floaty material moved to either side, a weak rocket was activated by the switch to tilt the rectangle in the opposite direction. This worked well as long as the force used to correct the orientation was not too strong. Over-correcting led to an almost automatic loss of control I had intended to perfect and use the device to make a self-leveling zeppelin. | 2008-11-04 16:46:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |
This sounds complex, to say the least, but well done for nearly doing it in the beta. Good luck to you, I'm sure you'll get this perfect in the full game, which I'm getting TOMORROW! | 2008-11-04 17:46:00 Author: mongoose7 Posts: 473 |

Hey, I should be getting the game tomorrow also (or if I pray to the FSM a lot... today ) Yes, it was fairly complex, I've gone through several prototypes before finally finding something that works. Once I've perfected it, I will give it away as a prize if people are interested in it. Using it should only be a simple question of gluing it to whatever needs to be level and then tying up the two switches to whatever needs to be activated. | 2008-11-04 17:52:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |
That sounds like an admirable goal. . . something I might give a shot. | 2008-11-08 01:09:00 Author: Trader Sam Posts: 92 |
i think you could improve on the design a little by making the floating material half a layer, so it cant be grabbed onto and shoved. hmm... another idea. instead of a square, it could be a circle. going sideways behind the circle would be two thin peices of glass going across (glued onto the big circle). inside of that would be a small, thin glass circle with a magnetic key on it. this way, when you rotate the circle by walking, the key will slide to the side of the circle. add magnetic key switches to the ends of the circle, and tada! a rudimentary, REAL gyroscope. you could also add the same glass bars perpendicular to the ones in the back to the front, along with its own set of keys and switches, for a more advanced gyro. | 2008-11-08 01:33:00 Author: altanonymous Posts: 22 |
I had actually started out thinking of a glass device, unfortunately I found out that most materials are more affected by momentum than by gravity. This resulted in the gyro not functioning if it is moving forward or backward The physics in the game take some getting used to. | 2008-11-08 14:33:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |
