60GB PS3 died, looking for advice [UPDATE: I FIXED IT!]

UPDATED:
Well guys i am near ecstatic right now, as I used the heat gun method and it is fixed! Is working fine and I am loving it Thought I'd give hope to people who are willing to try it. much love xx

---OP:------------------------------------------------------
Right, my 60GB PS3 is dead it seems. I turn it on, and it comes up with a yellow light, then goes to a flashing red light and beeps 3 times. That's it. I can't even turn it on to back up the data! I've tried removing and putting the hard drive back in, but no luck. So I'm wondering, what's the actual problem with the PS3?

I have already taken apart my 40GB PS3 (which I keep at home, 60GB comes to uni) so am confident in using the heat gun solution. But before I do that, is the motherboard the problem, as I thought that was the ylod?

Just a massive shame it happen now, just got in the LBP2 beta
Also I need my hard drive data back, as it's got alot of non backed p saves on it. Particularly my newly made GT5 save with all the licenses golded, and every possible special event so far golded too

Thanks guys

Ah yes, the YLOD. Well... Based on all the threads I've seen where this has happened and my own experience with the YLOD, you've got a few options... none of them are pleasant so prepare yourself.

1. Buy a new ps3 and kiss your old save data bye bye.

2. Send in your broken ps3 to Sony to fix for around $175 and you'll loose your data anyway because they will replace the HD. They will not copy over data, they will not send you the old HD back. (won't work anyway as all ps3 HD's will only work in the machine that the serial numbers match for anyway)

3. You can have someone local re-solder your ps3 and get it up and running for approximately 3 months before statistically it will fail again. The advantage of this is it's cheaper than having Sony do it and you can then back up the data from the HD and de authrorize your account so you can transfer all your stuff to a new ps3.

4. You can attempt to re-solder it yourself if you have the equipment, time and talent. There are several How To videos on You Tube that show you how to do this. Keeping in mind your still on borrowed time though like option 3.

I'd recommend option 3 if you absolutely must have your save data back but most repair guys charge around $50 at least so it's a little pricy (cheaper than Sony though and you can salvage your data)

Yep.... those are your options as far as I can recall. Sucks when it happens. Reminds me time and time again to tell people Back up your data while you can, when the yellow light shows up it's too late for backups unless you do the temp fix.

Good Luck!

Thanks Morgana, I'm going to go with option 4 for now, then see where I go from there So this flashing red light is the ylod?

Eit:
This is my other PS3 which I have taken apart, so hopefully a heat gun will do the trick on this one (I took apart that PS3 to re-apply the thermal paste, even though it was working fine! I did it for fun too really lol)
Also ignore the glue marks... I had to literally tear it apart! Stupid previous owner had ripped all the sliding mechanisms off so had to glue the case together, which I didn't know about at at the time of buying

The flashing red light is it dying. YLOD is pretty much guaranteed after it's been doing it for awhile. Mine made it three days flashing red before it went solid Yellow. Basically it's overheating like crazy when it's flashing red, which melts cheaply done solder points on the board and voila - Yellow light.

Good luck if your going to try it yourself. Maybe anyone here on lbpc who's done it can give you some tips. It looked tricky when I watched the videos. Might be because I haven't soldered since college and have never used a heat gun though. lol.

Guess you haven't seen the edit lol A heat gun is just as easy as using a hair dryer, which I'm sure you'll be familiar with It's strange thogh, I can't even turn my PS3 on at all with this flashing red light, surely it's as dead as it gets 2010-12-10 22:17:00

Mine died a few weeks ago also. Luckily I had -most- of my important data (LBP) backed up.

My ps3 has my LBP disk in it.
How hard is it to remove a disk manually?
EDIT: Solution via bounty (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=29607-I-ve-been-YLoDed-%28&p=513475&viewfull=1#post513475) worked perfectly.

Oh, and if I get a new PS3, how does logging into my existing ps3 account work?
EDIT: Great, thanks a bunch for confirmation Silverleon. =)

Nope we were posting simulatneously I guess. Looks like you know what your doing. Good Luck!

@ midnight_heist - I've heard it's not really easy. I think you end up having to unscrew a bunch of stuff which voids the warranty if your sending it to Sony. Not sure though - I was lucky enough to get mine out in time.

Oh, and if I get a new PS3, how does logging into my existing ps3 account work?

Pretty simple actually, just go to the "Sign up to Playstation Network" thing on XMB (as if you were making a new account) and once in it should ask "Make a new ccount" or "Use existing acount."

Simply select "Use existing account," input your account details, and presto!
Your account is in your new PS3, now you just need to DL all your stuff again and yer set to go!

Hope that helps!
