Syroc
Sack of all trades!
Interview conducted by DayneOram (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/member.php?8878)

Hello and welcome to another edition of the Creator Spotlight! This time we'll be uncovering the deep and dark secrets of the somewhat unknown creator; Syroc! Wait... What's that? You DO know him? Well, I guess we'll have to try a little harder to bring you something interesting.

It has definitely been interesting to write, I can tell you now! The levels he's made are rather varied, but they all feature very unique movement. Now that's definitely something Syroc has going for himself, if not his brilliant visuals, attention to detail and an astounding ability to make you think!

Keep reading for a peak into the mind of someone you claim to know so well! (No, I still don't believe you )

All right, this one isn?t really a question, but if you would be so kind, please list the levels you?ve published to date and any statistics you?d like to share with us, i.e. plays, hearts, how many rocket animals per level, etc. Whatever you feel like sharing.

Operation Sackeater
Speedmapping 1
Snowys Little Adventure
Lost Temple
Japanese Garden
ToS - The Valley of Birds
ToS2 - On the Island of Sultan Cazimi
A Journey
SlamBall
Just hatched!
Cave Story

The only two levels that got over 3000 plays are the ones that were featured in the MM Picks (Japanese Garden and On the Island of Sultan Cazimi). At least that was the case when I last checked. It's been a while.
All of the levels are rated 4 stars, though that says more about the rating system than the quality of my levels.

Here is a random statistic:
40% of those level contain at least one hidden Mr Molecule cutout.

Now, tell me... of these levels, which is your favorite? And why?
Oh, that?s a difficult question. Usually my favourite level is the level I most recently worked on. But to give you a proper answer, at the moment it's probably Cave Story. I don't think there are many other people who really like, but I actually build it with that in mind. I got a bit bored of those levels that just tell you all the time where to go and what to do next.
I?m also a bit proud of the characters in that level. I know they are not as good as characters created by other creators, but I?m not actually good a making characters and this was the first time I?m actually happy with the ones I created.

How long have you been playing LBP?
Since the very first public beta back in 2008.

What was the first full level you ever built? And what was it like?
It was called ?This and That. Random stuff? or something similar to that. It's still somewhere on my moon, but for some foolish reason I've edited it at some point and now it's unplayable. It was basically a series of random game play ideas strung together. If I remember correctly I started it on the first day of the beta and finished it 15 hours later at 6 in the morning. Back then I thought it was awesome, but it really isn?t!
If people are curious about my first steps in LBP you can Operation Sackeater. That?s the second level I built and it's much better than my first.

What creators and levels (if any) have inspired you to create?
Oh, difficult question? I rarely play community levels - probably missing out on a lot of fantastic levels - but if I had to point at any specific levels which inspired me it would probably be the levels by o-tera and also geosautus.

Aside from drawing inspiration from other creators and levels, is there anything in the world outside of LittleBigPlanet that inspires you? This could be a hobby, profession, or even a particular movie or type of music. Pretty much it can be anything in your personal life that has contributed to your experiences as well as inspired you as a creator.
Hah, it's certainly not the courses at university that serve as my muse. Politics, law and economics are not what one might call creative arts.
No, I think I get my inspiration directly from nature. I know this sounds a bit pretentious but it's true. Most of the gameplay ideas that I have are in one way or another inspired by nature. You might not notice it when you play the levels, because I usually have to make some changes to it to actually work as gameplay. In The Island of Sultan Cazimi for instance there is one section where you have to swing along some wooden beams that are attached to the ground using some spring bolts, so that they sway a bit if you hold on to them. I got the idea after watching grass sway in the wind.

The music that I listen to while creating also has quite an influence on what I actually build. And I think you see that in my levels. If a level has a consistent style throughout it I probably only listened to one style of music, but if there are few different styles and locations I've probably listened to different styles of music. A Journey is a good example for this; when I started building the level I listened to the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack hence the ship and cave section in the beginning. The area around the yellow castle was build while I was listening to more cheerful music and finally the swamp section was built under the influence of the beats of Pendulum.

What are some of your favorite video games (excluding LBP) - new and old?
I loved SimCity 2000 back in the days, though admittedly my cities usually want bankrupt pretty soon if I wasn?t using the editor to give me a bit of head start. In my defense though I was not even 10, so the concept of income tax and all that didn?t mean too much to me.
On the Nintendo 64 I loved Super Mario 64. Still do actually. The Zelda games on that console were also pretty good and I spend ages playing V-Rally.
My favorite recent game is Demon?s Souls. That game is just great. It's very challenging in the beginning but so rewarding once you get the hang of it.

If you could list your favorite things about LittleBigPlanet, what would they be?
My favorite thing is without a shadow of doubt the create mode. It's so good to have accessible editor and to be able to, more or less, create whatever you want.

And your least favorite thing(s)?
Wobble bolts. Wobble bolts and the pop-it.
The wobble bolts are obvious, I guess. They simply are a pain to set up.

The pop-it frustrates me because now there is so much stuff to scroll through that even placing two different stickers takes ages. Ok, that may be a slight exaggeration, but I do think that the pop-it isn?t really suited for the amount of objects, materials and stickers most people have by now.

I really don't like that is almost impossible to find good levels unless those making these level spend hours republishing their levels to get to the front page. That in itself is another problem of LBP. I would have liked if MM had updated the news section (Remember that thing? No? It's on your left moon.) with great levels like they used to in the beginning when the MMpicks were featured there.

What?s the worst thing that?s happened while creating?
I once wanted to rebuilt Japanese Garden, because I really wasn?t very happy with the visuals anymore and to get of some plain boring section.
After working on it for a few hours I decided to take a break. When I loaded the level the next all of the progress was lost. Cue me muttering some expletives and turning the game off.
I guess that happened to quite a few people at some point.

On a sort of similar subject, have there ever been any great ideas you had that failed or for any other reason you never implemented?
Oh, there are loads of great ideas I couldn?t realize because either the tools didn?t allow it or, and that was the case most of the time, I simply lacked the ability to set up all the logic correctly.
LittleBigPlanet 2 will solve most of those problems though! I actually tried out one idea during the Game Jam that I wasn?t able to realize in LBP 1, but with LBP 2 in only took one or two hours to set it all up.

If you worked for Media Molecule, what would your first order of business be? This could be anything from adding materials or tools to eradicating H4H.
First I would change the rules when it comes to hiring people. At least if I was supposed to work for them as an artist or something like that. There are dozens of people in the community who would be more suited for that than me.
After that is done I would pursue them to give players the option to turn off the notifications you get when someone publishes/republishes a level or achieved a high score and get rid of the humming in create mode as well as the screeching rewind sound. Oh, and maybe make a change to the scoreboard so that it displays only your friends and maybe the next highest score. Not sure all that many people care about xXx-Sn1p3r-Killa98-xXx's score.

Inspired by nature and looks great!
Scene from "A Journey"

http://imgur.com/TwHzS.png

"ToS2 - On the Island of Saltan Cazimi" is a very intricately designed level, with lots of moving parts, ranging from autumn leaves falling from trees, to whole sections of level turning up-side down! What were the biggest problems you ran into with these dynamic sections?
It's been almost 1 and half years, I believe, since I have published that level so it's a bit difficult to say which of those elements were the hardest to get right. I had actually forgotten about the leaves.
I recall having quite a few problems with magic carpet bit at the start of the level. These days (and probably back then) most creators would simply use some sort of cart high above the carpet to get it from A to B. I apparently didn't think of doing it that way and instead opted for very long pistons. As I discovered around that time stiff pistons aren't actually all that stiff if they have to carry a lot of weight over a long distance so I had some problems keeping it in a straight line and more importantly have it line up with the second magic carpet even if four players weigh down the first carpet. Considering that I only used two carpets in the first place because I decided to use pistons to make them "fly" the whole thing is overly complicated and I would definitely do it differently today. If only we had Movers and Followers back then...

On the same level, how on earth did you come up with such an exotic and authentic sounding name?!
Haha, this is going to be a bit complicated.
I knew it was supposed to be set on a flying island (the one you see at the end of Valley of Birds) so there is the first part of the name. Valley of Birds was set somewhere on the Arabian peninsula and was actually going to be called wadi al-tair, which basically means valley of birds (not that I speak Arabic). I got that name from an island called jabal al-tair somewhere off the coast of Yemen. I think I noticed that island one day when I was looking at maps from that region (don't ask me why... I just do that from time to time^.^).
That's the island part of the name covered. The Sultan Cazimi bit is not much simpler. I wanted an exotic name and because Valley of Birds had an Arabic theme I thought it would be nice to have another Arabic word in it. How exactly I got to Cazimi I don't know anymore, but I probably followed some wild trajectory from al-tair to Altair, which is not only a fictional dude backstabbing guards, but also a star. Cazimi is an Arabic astrological term which means "heart of the sun". Light was supposed to play a major role in the level and the final boss fight. I had the idea that you would fight some light god at the end. None of this made it into the final level though...
So, yeah I somehow made connections between all those things and came up with that name.

The crazy thing is I'm not even making this stuff up, that is actually how my brain sometimes works.

In "A Journey" we see a lot of nice little touches such as moss on rocks, little pockets of water, and torches lining cave walls. Do you add these features as you make that particular section, or do you go through at the end to put them in? And why do you prefer to do it this way?
Thank you.
I think in that particular case I build the rock formation first (which took forever because it was all done with the corner editor) and later went back to add all the little touches like moss, puddles and most importantly lights. That's usually the way I built levels simply because decorating can be a bit frustrating in my opinion and if I decide to delete a section I don't lose an hour worth of placing stickers and decorations. But I'm happy that you noticed the little touches, because that was the first level were I paid more attention to details.

"Cave Story" is a brilliant level, that manages to retain its great gameplay even when the lights (which are ingeniously disguised as fireflies!) are few and far between. I can see why you say you are inspired by nature as the darkness adds another dimension to the experience. What advice would you give so that people can keep dimly lit levels playable?
Err, none. I can't actually give you any advice based on that level, because that started out with intention of being hard to navigate (i.e. a more realistic cave).
But yeah in general I tried to guide the player a little bit by illuminating the right path a tiny bit more than the rest. I later went and added some point bubbles to make it even easier, because hardly anyone managed to finish it and I wanted them to at least see the rest of the cave. That's pretty much all; carefully placed lights and some strategically placed bubbles are good ways to guide players through dim lit sections. The latter is of course a lot less subtle.

Now I'd like to mention one of your brilliant LBP2 Beta levels, "Revenge of the T Block". What is the story behind this level? Is there a particular "niggle" you have in Tetris?
I'm glad you asked. I actually came up with the idea for this level just after I and several other people went to the Community Jam at MM earlier this year to get an early look at LBP 2. And when I say "just after" I mean a few hours later when I was on the train back to the airport. That was literally the first clear idea of what to build since the minute they showed us the game. Before that I had far too many ideas at once.
Only had to wait a few month to see whether it was actually possible to build it. Or more precisely whether I had the skills to build it. Thankfully LBP 2 new tools make all this dead easy. ^.^

The only niggle I have with Tetris is that I haven't been able to play the original on an old Gameboy in well over a decade... And the L-Block appearing never when I need it, but always when I don't need it.

Whilst we're on the subject of the beta, I've noticed you're producing mini games a lot more than regular levels. Is this because the levels won't transfer, and we have limited time, or do you just prefer making minigames with the new tools?
I prefer arcade games over all and not just in LBP 2 to be honest. They are often much more fun than your average 10 hour game or a 20 minute platformer in LBP. But, yeah I mostly use this beta to practice with all the new tools (and find bugs of course! Ahem... )so every level I publish usually focuses on one aspect like for example the movers. That's also why I borrow some of the basic gameplay ideas from other games. I hoping to make deeper, more complex and original arcade games once the full game is out, but for now I'm sticking to those little games that take a day or two to make.
I don't think there will be very many levels coming from me that will actually include Sackboy in the way we had to use it in LBP 1. I may still do some platformers, though I think first I will try bring back loads of old games and add a new spin to them.

You've been a member of LBPC for a long time now, so you must have come across some real gems of all sorts... What are some of your funniest moments that you can recall over this period of time?
Hmm, funniest...? Maybe not the funniest but dawesbr's xp challenge threads were great. This one (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=17748-1500xp-challenge), this one (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=17785-3000-xp-giveaway%21-Sequel-to-the-smash-hit%21) and this one (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=18157-5000xp-Challenge-Epic-final%E9). That guy clearly had too much time at his disposal.
Oh, I should mention all the tutorial threads as well. They helped me a lot. Not that I make much use of logic in my levels, but sometimes it's interesting to see what you can achieve if wanted to but a bit more effort into making custom switches. Thank god we don't have to do that anymore in LBP2.

Now, I know they say you start to lose your memory at old age, but can you remember when you first joined the site? Why did you join, and did you have any experiences you'd like to share from your first couple of weeks?
I can't, actually! But thanks to the wonders of modern technology I found out that I joined on May 5th 2009. I must have been looking for a better forum after having spend a few month on the dreadful site that is the Workshop. Why is it that official websites are often times worse than websites run by fans in their spare time? Anyway, someone pointed me in this direction and I just sign-up. Helps that you lot are all very friendly.
Though sometimes a bit too much value is put on harmony and friendliness.

And now... A light-hearted question; Tell us why you love LBP2!
Because there is just more. More of everything!

Seriously though, all the added features and tweaks just allow us to more easily create what we really want to create. The fact that you don't need to spend hours on handmade logic anymore also greatly improves the game. It's just generally easy and faster to make what you want to make.
Judging by the current beta we will see a much bigger variety of gameplay and design styles. Really looking forward to see what the community can do beyond the kind of levels we grown used to over the last two years.

Oh, yeah, I'm sure the story level will be good fun too.

Finally, is there anything you, as a creator, would like to add to this? Or any other experiences you?d like to share? If not, I?d like to ask one more question of you: If you could give any bit of advice to new creators out there who are thinking about entering the wonderful world of creating, what would it be?
It's perfectly ok to practice by remaking your favourite levels. Once you feel like you know enough, start unleashing awesomeness onto the community! Most importantly build what you would like to play and take your time to do it. There is no one behind you forcing you to build in a certain way or a certain thing. It's your sandbox!

Quite a fun and interesting mini game from the Beta by Syroc! ..even though it is a demo!

http://imgur.com/TgGre.png

Camping, a pesky stray cat, ancient artifacts, treasure, and a mysterious underground mansion leads the team to an almost forgotten closeup with Syroc. You could almost call that "A Journey" in itself!

For those of you with shiny iPads and iPhones, here's the direct link to the video:

Well, in this episode we've flown piston powered carpets, fought Tetris pieces and caused Indiana Jones to fall to his doom. Sounds like a job well done to me! But really, the highlight was the filling of the proverbial video sandwich - Syroc's levels! I just love to hear about little creator gems and secrets, showing how you don't need to overload your level with logic to be successful! Unless you're making a mini-game. In which case you can use tons of logic to recreate those retro classics. And maybe one or two modern ones if you're as ambitious as this guy!

That's all, folks! We hope you have enjoyed this installment of the Creator Spotlight. For past spotlights, please visit this link (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?100-Creator-Spotlight-Archive). See you next time!

Sorry for the delay everyone, we've had quite a few issues with the busy holiday season!

Extra special thanks to Jwwphotos for putting up with me, and managing almost every aspect of the video! (minus the actual editing).

Enjoy

That's ok. I haven't really made up my mind on how to pronounce my PSN name either.

I said the same thing.... about the pronunciation ... I've always said it See-rock.

Good job on the video, guys... I'm sorry that I wasn't really a part of this one AT ALL. Last month has been probably one of the worst months of my life health-wise.

My favorite part of the video was that ghost that came out of the box. I just realized that it was sorta a "box ghost" LOL. And I have no idea how Leather did that thing where he makes the movie screen go onto the screen in game, probably green screen, but it was awesome.

Oh, and Syroc, I found your spoken interview to be rather enjoyable. I sort of liked that you were nervous about it. It added to the charm of the whole thing. It reminds us that the creators are real people when they're nervous.

First off a huge congratulations and thanks to Syroc for putting up with us over the past few months. Thanks again for being such a great visit for a closeup and a wonderful, interesting interview. Really loved the behind the scenes bits especially to show off some stuff from the Beta.

To our friends and fans here at LBPC, Thanks for your support and praise. It means quite a bit after all this work. So sorry about being so late with this edition, but things happen. These just take longer than anyone can ever imagine with the amount of work that needs to be done. From the interview and writing the intro and final thoughts, meeting up and recording with the creator, to conjuring up and writing the story line for the video, set creation, special effects, lighting, decoration, then on to recording, which takes a bit of acting as well as in this case a quite a bit of sackbot programming and finally the editing. Plus a huge heapin' helpin' of organization to make it all happen.. whew!! lol

Anyway.. none of this can be done all on your own. ..though I have tried! lol It takes a great team and I have to especially thank TheCountessZ for some amazing LBP sets as well as helping me out in doing some acting. A huge thanks to Dayne for quite a bit of LBP set work as well as a bit of acting. I also have to thank Leather-Monkey for stepping in last minute to try and set a world record on editing. If only the recording was going as fast as the editing!!! Seriously though.. an awesome job of editing with some jaw dropping masking and green screen work in the movie theater bit as well as the reverb for the cave and well parts.. Perfect!! So sad that we found out we had more time granted to us by youtube AFTER we trimmed down even more two days ago!! Gheeesh... always something... lol

Thanks again!!!

Thnx for putting links to video so it plays on YouTube because I hate it when there's videos on a forum that I can't play because the iPad doesn't have flash2010-12-10 16:22:00

Really nice read! I very much appreciatte all the effort the crator spotlight team puts into this, and I'm looking forward to the next onr!
Also, congratulations, Syroc! I have to admit, though, that I didn't exepect you being spotlighted, but it's still a much pleasant surprise!
Believe me, I was quite surprised as well. Didn't expect it at all.

I always read his name in my language for some reason
Good, that's how I want people to pronounce it.

Wow. Another awesome spotlight! The beginning and ending of it did not feel as dynamic as many of the previous spotlight, but it is still very good!

Whenever i watch one of these spotlights i just wanna go create some awesome new levels so that i might get spotlighted someday... Well i think i should go work on my levels right now!

lol.. thanks so much! One thing we try to consider is the creator themselves for the storyline . For example DrunkenFist_Lee is totally hinged on insanity with levels all over the place where Syroc is very laid back and his levels at least in LBP1, more classic and stately. Therefore DFL's storyline was way way out there, where Syroc's we took a much calmer approach. At least that is what we hope we are doing.

Glad you enjoyed them!

Hey Syroc and the Creator Spotlight Crew,

Congratulations on the Spotlight Syroc. I was waiting for your time under the spotlight, and I'm glad it's finally here. Anyways, I thoroughly enjoyed playing all your levels, and you really are a Renaissance man of a creator. Hehe. Keep up the great work, and I can't wait to play more of your levels when LBP2 comes out!

As for the Creator Spotlight Crew, you guys have done it again! Thank you so much for creating such a high quality interview and video--it is a great gift to this community. I look forward to the next one!

Congratulations on your brilliant spotlight Syroc and thank you for showing us your levels. Thoroughly enjoyed the video, the logic made my mind boggle! Loved the part when you asked jw what your level was called and he didn't know either! So funny! Lovely to hear your voice.

Thanks to all the crew, the video is amazing, the story, visuals and sound were all stunning. The sound of your voice coming from the bottom of the well was superb jw. You guys are genius!

Thanks so much Icey! Means quite a bit.

The added reverb for the well shots were courtesy of the amazingly talented Leather-Monkey as part of his editing prowess.

Umm... Yeah... A little problems about the poem for Syroc, relating to what may be christmas and a teeny tiny bit of laziness, so I would really appreciate if this would stay open some time (a few hours) longer so I may, before this is locked write my poem after playing the levels required. Am to update this post with it as soon as possible.

..well, it just so happens we sorta took a break since we ran into issues getting this one as well as the next one ready in time. HEY!! It's the holidays!!!

So it might be Tuesday or even Wednesday before the next one appears!

Wait, does that mean I promised my little sister half of my share of the once forgotten chocolate treasure in vain?! NUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!! Anyways, the poem (which I post here because I could not resist to joke about my karma)...

Ahem...

A journey. Far, far away. further beyond any place.
What wonders do you think we might be able to face?
Through caves, castles and everything more,
It satisfies an adventurer trough his/her very core.

To the island of sultan Casimi we arrive
Complex yet in a simple way like a bee's hive.
Everything twisting and turning, like imagination,
This island, a dream of high quality sensation!

What a cave story. I am not a toy, but food I am not too
I shall stand tall, you hungry cave dweller, and still live, woohoo!
Freedom I pursue, cages can never hold me still
Though you are a big n' ugly one I'm full of will!!!

Syroc, you sack of all trades, master of fun
Is there no middle of awesomeness you can't shun?
I cannot wait for the awesomeness which will arrive from you
In what is to be Little Big Planet 2!!!
