Visual Design

I'm thinking of making a follow-up to my "Platform Incredible" level and I've already got a couple of gameplay ideas going around in my mind. But if the original was criticised for one thing it was its visuals. So what techniques do others use to go about creating a visually appealing level? (Especially when the level has no particular theme and just wants to look pretty) A couple of tricks would be helpful so I can begin creating 2010-12-08 16:45:00

Hey to help the thread and or people to view what you are looking to do.

Have a look at these (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=35967-Platform-Incredible)

My recommendation is that you add some blotches on the back layer to break up the empty space in the open. Also make some lights with some warm/cold colours (for which effect you want) which add some atmosphere. Also consider adding some stickers and decorations on the empty parts to add some detail. Other than that make the obstacles look pretty and the sections look visually pleasing

Well, If it has no theme, then just try to make everything in the level look like it goes together. You should try to pick a loose theme. At least for your visuals. Try to use a few materials, and stick with em. Repeat them throughout the level. I always build the level "loose", so I can make changes easily. Once you get the main part done. then go back, and start adding detail. After you get the detail in then try to spruce it up with some accessories from your stickers, and don't forget to add lighting. IMO good lighting can make, or break the visual design of a level. Usually the only time it breaks it, is if the creator doesn't use it. Hope this helps. Good luck! 2010-12-08 22:12:00

Use lots of sharp edges, and less it's supposed to be a clean, sanitary factory or lab, then try not to use straight edges. ALWAYS put little chinks and bumps in it to make it seem more "real". Also add layers, borders and lots of different kinds of stickers (As long as they conform to your theme).

Also, pick just 4 materials or so.
