LBP2 - Top Down

Archive: 11 posts

Like most people i can't wait for the second game to come out, one of the features im looking forward to the most is the ability to have top down levels, I didn't make the beta so was just woundering if someone could give me some info on how this feature actually works?

How many layers do you have to play with? is it still 3 plus 4 thin?
Can you jump or use the bounce pads?
What about the grappling hook?
What about gravity? how does top down affect this?

Any feedback would be helpfull in my early level designs for when it comes out.

Cheers!

Top down is just an illusion. You're still using the same layers and same ... everything, you're just drawing it to appear from a bird's eye view.

Controllinator seats can orient sackpeople/bots to appear top down as well, to heighten the illusion. Gravity doesn't operate in a "top down" fashion, etc. You'd have to simulate gravity going into the screen if you needed it.

It's basically the same as trying to make an LBP1 top-down. There aren't any "top-down" settings. It's just building a level up with 0 g and a concept you want to use. You can jump, but not into the foreground layers, and bouncepads work normally as well.

So it's just using LBP2 Tools to make a better topdown...

Cheers guys, one last question though, how does water interact with the top down illusion?2010-12-03 15:50:00

Well... it would be a line.
Top-down IS THE SAME EDIT MODE as "un"top-down, so the water is exactly the same.

Well yea, depends, water physics (things going to surface) could ruin the illusion and if there gonna be water surface visible it definitly ruins the effect. But if you play it well it might be useful for something, underwater topdown view for example, i think controllinator on holo should not be effected by water.2010-12-03 16:10:00

On the plus side, there are materials available that look like water, so while you can't really use the real water in a top down level, there are ways of mimicking it.2010-12-03 17:56:00

Can someone get the link to the video of craft earth crusaders? That should show this guy the stuff visually. (note, the 3d layers are used in that)2010-12-03 17:58:00

Oh yea you can use layer glitch in it and make buildings or mountains but only 3-4 hights levels would be playable

That airship tech demo by jump_button is good example of using background layers as lower layers in top-down
