the 8/16 bit era

Archive: 11 posts

for those who grew up with the sega master system and mega drive/genesis, what were your favourite games? do you still have a working 8/16 bit console?

one game in particular really shaped my imagination as a kid,was splatterhouse,especially splatterhouse 2. i must of finished it hundreds of times,even tho its just a side scrolling beat em up basically. i draw alot,and even now i can still see how splatterhouse has shaped the things i see in my imagination,to put on paper.ill probaly remember the music from each level till the day i die too. sorry thats abit morbid.

i have the new splatterhouse,its great but imo the originals cant be beaten

Yeah, I still have a Mega Drive somewhere. It was my first console. I didn't have many games but I loved Landstalker. It's one of my favourite games, though if I played it now I might think it's pants, I dunno. I remember everything about it really clearly, the duke, that green sword that caused earthquakes when you fully charged it, the teleporting trees... your Splatterhouse is my Landstalker. <3

I can't remember many of them now. I remember hating California Games. That game was awful.

I had Zero Wing, but I don't remember it having the same ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US intro.

I made the mistake of throwing out our Commodore 64................................ Pooop!

I still have a fully functioning Sega Genesis and SNES, they get more plays than my PS3 for sure. Those were my first "consoles", I played NES at my friend's house though.

Favorite SNES games by far are Yoshi's Island and Donkey Kong Country. Genesis, can't beat Sonic 3 + Knuckles

Splatterhouse... Pffft.. Juvenile Rubbish, and it played like mince.
But it did have good graphics for the time.

the first game I can remember getting engrossed with was Elite on the Amstrad 24k (the 'luxury' version with an inbuilt tape deck - no seperate tape deck required!);
And I have fond memories of the 16 bit "Inindo: Way of The Ninja";

Both of those games could be remade today, with just a small graphical update, and still be immensely playable games.
The sheer size and scope of both of them was unbelievable considering the platforms they were on.

Modern games are tiny and linear in comparison - even supposedly "open" titles like Oblivion

And I can still put on my NES and have a game of Duck Hunt - the light gun still works perfectly.

thanks for replys everyone,Commodore 64? thats before my time lol, i still have a working mega drive and master system too,still working after well over ten years! i cant imagine whipping out my ps3 in 15+ years and it still working lol. oh yeah,duck hunt! i remember that,putting the gun point blank at the screen haha,i only had 3 games for the nes, duck hunt mario and castlevania,i think it was that,with the line "what a terrible night to have a curse" yeah macnme everyone says that about splatterhouse,well not in those exact words,it is a very simple game,but somthing about it just clicked with me.
there are loads of old games i would love to see remade,golden axe,zombies oh and another r type would be nice. tryed searching for elite on Amstrad 24k,couldnt find anything tho,shame i wanted to see what it looked like.

havent played zero wing but i seen the intro,only when i heard the meme lol. all your base are belong to us haha

I had a Master System and Mega Drive, (both gone now tho ) on Master System I loved playing "California Games" and "Kensiden" (i think thats how u spell it) and i liked "Sonic 2" and "Altered Beast" on the Mega Drive. anyone remember that secret kinda Snail Maze game on the Master System? where u hold the two buttons and Left on the D-Pad while it boots up (I think).. the theme song still gets stuck in my head.2010-12-04 03:07:00

Favorite SNES games by far are Yoshi's Island and Donkey Kong Country.
The first console I played was the NES but the first one I had was the SNES and, just like Foofles, Yoshi's Island and Donkey Kong Country were my favourites too. Unforunately we only rented those games and didn't actually buy them I sometimes set up my SNES and play either Super Mario Bros, Sim City, The Llion King or Pink Panther. Pink Panther was another great one. Those are the only 4 games we actually bought for the SNES.

I miss the 16bit days, back then games were actally difficult yet still fun, games these days are too easy in my opinion.

A little interesting fact is that we got a lifetime garuntee with our SNES, going good so far
