New Headers

Archive: 51 posts

I'm still sick and on a really weird sleep schedule, so it's not really a surprise to me that I woke up about an hour ago with no immediate desire to go back to bed. I sat there and thought for a little while, and I suddenly remembered how outdated our headers were. I know you guys have been asking for it for a while, but I've been putting it off because there really wasn't enough header-worthy content to work with. I figured now, over a month after the last time I looked into it, there must be something - and there was. As I looked, I noticed a good deal of images were watermarked or too small for our purposes, but thanks in part to Sony's press content distribution site I did manage to get my hands on fifteen (same number as before) good-to-awesome screenshots, exclusively of LBP2. They're in the rotation (as I'm sure you've noticed) and the old ones have been phased out (though not deleted - never!). Hope you enjoy!

Note: If for some reason you're still seeing the old ones, it's due to the fact that your browser is retaining them in its cache. You'll need to clear that cache (or wait for your browser to do it itself) in order to see the new content. Modern browsers will detect changes and update automatically, so most people won't even have to think about it.

what do you mean why? that's like asking why would you want gevurah22 to make another level?

because it's awesome and you want more of it

in this site's case along with new headers some other visual enhancements in the site would be nice as well

even midnight agrees with me

LBPCentral should add Screenshots from LBP1, LBP2, and LBP PSP!

Thus proving they are ultimate in LittleBigStuff.

I just noticed that there was a LBP2 picture up there. So I checked if there was an thread for it and here I am.

The pictures are looking fantastic, thanks CC.

Looks very nice! Though it makes the sites background look as if it could do with an update. The fluffy electronic look of LBP2 doesn't work too well with the paper and paint look of LBP1, in my opinion anyway. But I know how much work was put into that background, so I don't expect a new revamp just because of some new headers.

Anyway, thanks CC and get well soon!

EDIT: I was seeing LBP2 pics, right up until I posted this... then it went back to an LBP1 pic... Huh? Ah well, I'm sure Safari will sort itself out soon ^^

EDIT 2: Oh wait, LBP2 ones again! xD

I was gonna post that I had done the exact same thing as Alec, but DayneOram here has beat me to it.

Also, thanks for including the Turkeynator! He's my favorite boss out of the ones I've seen!

That's my opinion too.
I'm sure there are tons of people on LBPC that would be willing to help out.
For example, with the increased photo size via the beta, we could easily make a titled version of the tech-cardboard. Or even some non-official headers.

We should hold a contest or something.

Anyways...the headers are great, the old images were good too, but new is good huh?

Actually i like the idea of submitting custom pics that could win a place in the headers and maybe help design a new cardboard background or something 2010-12-03 00:11:00

That's a great idea; we could even have images of more influential members in their levels. Of course, it would be cool to have photo contests.
Anyway, the new headers are great!

Sweet! I've been waiting for these!
Thanks CC, you're the best!

EDIT: btw, even with the old ones, I was always refreshing to the same picture, there wasn't an rotation of the pictures. It still happens with the new ones too. Do my profile has some sort of problem or something? :S

It would be nice, but it's in no way a priority for us. By all modern standards the site looks great and it serves its purpose well - changing the way we look is expensive, in both time and resources, and it's not worth the other opportunities we could use those resources on instead. The only way I could see us changing our look is if it becomes obsolete in some way or we literally don't have anywhere else to focus our energies. Right now, neither is the case.

There's a setting in General Settings that enables/disables header rotation. Check to make sure you've got it enabled.

Are you open to the idea of someone from the community (willing to spend their time) creating a new one?
Leather-Monkey brought up a good point how the visuals clash.
I'm no host/coding expert, but surely it can't be that difficult to replace some images? Especially if we supply some for you.

Overhauling the way a site looks does involve lots of redesigning individual images, but it also involves a ton of other smaller things (CSS tweaks, primarily) that need to be changed to match the new look. And that's if you're building a style from an existing design - if you're designing from scratch, it takes even longer. This style alone probably took me two weeks of 6-8 hours of work a day to design, iron out, and optimize - not much time if I was working in an actual workplace, but a ton of time considering I'm a student with school/other responsibilities to focus on.

On that note, yes - if someone could convince me they had the experience and skill to design something cool, I'd give them the freedom to try, but they'd need to be able to show that they at least have a) past vBulletin experience and b) a history in web design. I wouldn't be available to guide someone through the process.

There is another, much more expensive option: if you guys can round up enough support in the form of donations, I can buy the services of a team that works in designing vBulletin skins for a living. It's a very expensive path ($700-$1500, depending on the team), which is why I've always opted to simply design the skin myself, but if you guys want it sooner and there's enough people throwing financial support behind it, it's certainly feasible.

That reminds me... don't upgrade VB anytime soon. They added new stylevars and it messes up some of the stuff on the style if its not updated properly.

This does sound like a fun project tho. We could let the community make some rly cool visual changes to the site. I can help anyone who is interested since I've got a copy of the software.

The new headers look great, I love them! I still like the look of the of site a lot, it sounds like a ton of work to change it. Unless a sponser steps up to fund it, or enough donations are raised to hire it out, I would say leave it- you guys have enough work on your hands already! Thanks, you guys do a great job!2010-12-05 00:17:00

Personally, if we do ever go down the re-design route, I'd love to see the design work come from a true fan of LBP, rather than a professional design team hired to do a job. This is a fan site after all and when all content is fan-made, I think that makes it extra special. And yeah, it'd be way cheaper, but that concern is secondary as far as I'm concerned.

You could trying saving the source code and replacing image links with custom images of your own that correspond with the image sizes here. I don't know how well that would work though...

And who designed this layout? Was it mrsupercomputer?

I think CC said somewhere that he designed it himself.

Mrsupercomputer helped out quite a bit - he "stickerified" the logo and provided lots of feedback while the design was being worked on. It's why his name is in the footer alongside mine.
