Weight Puzzle Beta Test

Archive: 2 posts

Look for Weight Puzzle Beta Test under my PSN ID Stellakris. It is going to be part of upcoming level I am working on and apart from some decoration (instructions in the form of hieroglyphs) and tweaking, I consider it finished. Give it a test run, if you like. I appreciate all feedback, but what I am particularly looking for is: did you find this puzzle too difficult? Or, do you think other players will consider this puzzle too hard?

There is not much to tweak at this puzzle to make it easier; you either see the solution or you don't. If it turns out too hard for most people, I will rather make it an optional puzzle in the level in order to get some extra point bubbles or prices.

So, tell me.

I think you've done a good job designing this puzzle. It has a clear and logical goal for the player. It appears to be simple at first glance, but in actuality it's not. I personally had no problem figuring out the solution to the puzzle and if anything the controls were initially more overwhelming than the puzzle itself. The controls weren't bad, though, because they were easy to learn and were represented well by visual cues. It's just that the controls aren't clear until the player has grabbed each switch to learn what it does, which is fine, because I think that method of teaching controls to a player is better than a swarm of text bubbles. What I've said by no means is criticism, I'm just pointing out things I noticed while playing through the puzzle. I think you should just keep it in the level as it's easy enough to figure out by trial and error combined with very basic logic. But on the other hand, I may just be one of those people as you put it who "see the solution."

I think it's important to ask yourself who are you targeting to satisfy with this level? Are you trying to please a wide variety of the community or are you going for a more niche group? Also, does the puzzle pop up abruptly or were there previous puzzles before it? If the latter is the case, then by the time the player reaches this puzzle it wouldn't be a problem if it was too hard because you know they are good enough to at least get to that point. The decision whether to keep the puzzle or not, in my opinion really shouldn't be based on whether it's too hard or not, but more on who your target demographic is and whether it fits the previous difficulty of the level. I understand you made this post in order to learn whether the puzzle is too hard or not. But I feel like I can't give you a definitive answer in whether you should keep it in the level, as I don't know what your intentions for the level are or who your target demographic is.

To recap: I thought the puzzle wasn't very hard, but my opinion on it's difficulty isn't a good one to base your decisions on, as I tend to play a lot of puzzle games, which may just make this seem easy to me. Also, if you do come to the consensus that it's a difficult puzzle (I don't think that'll be the case but), that's no reason to take it out. The decision should be based upon your basic intentions for the level and who your target audience is. I hope my post is helpful for when you are making your decision on whether to keep the puzzle or not.

Sorry if there are any typos/grammar errors, I'm too lazy to proofread this.
