so christmas is around the corner and myfather asked me what i wanted.
the only thing i can think of is a new pc upgrade.
iv narowed it down to a new processer.
as of now my processer is a genuineintel_-_x86_family_6_model_15. ie a stock chip.
im in the market for something that can run gta4 at a decent rate and relitively pricy(400 to 600)

im no tech gurue so i figure this is better suited for you guys to help me with.

What computer do you have? You could also consider just getting a video card.2010-11-29 01:20:00

well reading off what i can(one again im not an expert here) my pc is a "compaq presario pc" and it allready has a nvidia geforce 8800gts. so graphical capabilitys is not an issue i asume it is just a matter of processing the mass amount of data involved with a high end game.

so iunno where to go. full new processer(a name if posible plese) or maby just get a butt load more ram.

thank you for your help

A processor upgrade may help improve the performance of a game but you might also require additional RAM and video card memory.

If you really want to upgrade the CPU, I could point you in the right direction if you can provide the model number of your Compaq.

The 8800's were a really good graphics card some 2 - 3 years ago, but also depends on how much memory you have on the card. Seems the GTS model came in 512mb and 320mb though it has been awhile since I thought about them! lol I have two 8800 GTX OC each with 768mb in SLI mode running in my current rig and don't have any graphic speed issues that I have found on any game so far. ...so far.. lol

However if I found the correct information your MB is a ASUS IPILP-LC (http://www.pnjcom.com/Hp-Compaq-Asus-Motherboard-ipilp-lc-Pn-5189-0462-ipilp-lc.htm) and doesn't support SLI. So if you needed more GPU, then you would have to get a huge honking card rather than just adding a second of the same make and model.

Looks like you might have some choices as far as CPU's. If what I read was correct and didn't get lost on the way.. You currently have

Intel E2160 1.80GHz, 1 MB L2 Cache, 800 MHz Front Side Bus

and can upgrade...
Socket type: 775
Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:

Core 2 Duo E4x00 with Dual Core technology (Conroe) up to E4400 <<< this would probably be your only upgrade since the next level down you have the best choice.

Pentium E2000 series (Conroe) up to E2160

Pentium D 9xx with Dual Core technology (Presler) up to 960

Pentium 4 6x1 series (Cedar Mill) up to 661

Celeron 4xx series up to 440

Celeron D 3xx series (Cedar Mill) up to 365

Celeron D 3xx series (Prescott) up to 355

So not sure what you want to do actually. I don't know anything about GT 4, but to make yourself a more stable gaming platform you might need to bump GPU power as well as quite a bit of CPU. To be totally honest, it would be handy to have an MB with a bunch more future flexibilty.. like SLI enabled as well as offering Quad as well as Dual cpu's. ...but then my suggestions usually start small and have you spending much more quickly.

If you did a bit of research and checked out what type of memory, you might find a good MB, CPU combo at either Tiger Direct or NewEgg and be able to use your existing memory and be within your price range as well as give you a ton more choices down the road.

Jwwphotos summed it up perfectly. You can upgrade the processor to an Intel Core 2 Duo E4400 (http://www.compuvest.com/Desc.jsp;jsessionid=a56420d1bec417283cdbd4b1e89d?i id=1553881)

I do fear that the upgrade might not be worth the performance increase. Benchmark (measure of processor performance) tests for the E2160 vs. E4400 are apart by 166 (according to cpubenchmark.net)

While this will give you a slightly faster system, It may become too slow for near future needs. (The E4400 is already considerably outdated to today's standards)
According to the GTA IV system requirements, you would only meet the minimum requirements. You would still need a better processor to meet the recommended system requirements.

At this point I would suggest that you either consider buying a new computer or upgrading the motherboard on your current one. Many computers are relatively cheap now but may become obsolete within a few years. Eventually you have to decide when its more cost efficient to just replace the entire computer rather than spend hundreds on an upgrade that may still make your computer outdated.

If you have any questions or don't understand something, feel free to ask about it.

Exactly... for the money, I don't think he would really notice the improvement and still be pretty outdated. I think he would be better off looking for a new MB (or a new system from the ground up for that matter) that might fit into that case that comes with a more modern CPU, though memory might have to be purchased as well. Just depends, but there are quite a few ASUS boards that accept all kinds of memory that might fit in your case size. Although a really quality case like an Ultra can be had quite cheaply.

Let us know if you have any other questions! I don't pretend to know everything, just had quite a bit of experience plopping pc's together over the years.
