TI-LBP Calculator - REDUX

Archive: 11 posts

That's right, here I go again on a somewhat useless endeavor. I'm going to create a new calculator that is more powerful than my previously made TI-LBP: The LittleBIGPlanet Calculator (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=20045-TI-LBP-The-LittleBIGPlanet-Calculator). I've got a general idea of how all of it will work.

The big question: Is it worth it to even start this project with LBP2 coming out so soon?
(I know, most of you will think that making a calculator is pointless no matter what the situation is, but think of this as a logic system demo, not as a calculator)

**I know that all of my work will be made obsolete when LBP2 comes out. As will anything else logic-based that people have made in LBP1. Figured I would end this "era" with a bang **

For those who care about the specifics:
Here's what I'm thinking the specs are going to be:

adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides
input range of -9999 to 9999 (!)
output range of -99,980,001 to 99,980,001 (!)
calculation time:

with sequential calculation, ~10 seconds for add and subtract
with sequential calculation, ~15 minutes for multiplication and division
with simultaneous calculation, ~2 seconds for add and subtract
with simultaneous calculation, ~20 seconds for multiplication and division

NO PURE BINARY OR BCD CALCULATIONS WHATSOEVER?!

This would use a different approach to logic that I have not really used before, but I have realized the following: (A) binary is great for representing "numbers" like a digital computer, but (B) LBP is not a digital computer.

I figure that the larger the base of the number "system" I use, the fewer parts will be needed to calculate with (up to a certain point, anyway). Right now, I'm building components to work with decimal, as that is the easiest for me to comprehend in these early stages, but I'm almost certain that I shall change that to hexadecimal, base-32 or even base-36 (yes, 36. I have a reason lol). At this point, it doesn't matter what base I use, as they will all work in the same manner, but limited space and complexity create the need for efficient components.

That sounds amazing, I'd love to see this. Ending with a bang rather than fizzling out is how I like it.2010-11-27 22:39:00

It does sound good , I just hope I can deliver on the performance, and do it in time for the new game.2010-11-27 22:54:00

My biggest concern is the LBP2 demo, I think that will take away a lot of LBP1's audience even before the release of the full game.2010-11-27 23:13:00

Will you show a "behind the scenes" screen shot? If you wanted to keep your methods a secret then nobody would blame you, but just like the Genius of a normal everyday calculator no one can truly appreciate your work if they don't see the work. Does that make sense?

I'm hoping I can finish before the demo comes out, for that reason and the fact that I'll want to play the demo

You mean a screenshot of my current progress? Or when it is finished? I planned on letting everybody that plays it see the inner workings, just like my last calculator. I even made a separate level linked to it that showed the parts moving as the player messed with the inputs.

I confess I haven't tried it yet, that was just a knee jerk reaction on my part.It really is the way to go though. I've taken up enough of your time from making this so no "in the works" screen shots are necessary and if you going to have your calculator "Open faced" I'm just going to play it to see how it ticks. Good luck to you.

Nah, you're not taking up my time, and I probably will post some screenshots once I get farther along. Also, no need to confess that you haven't played it, I would have been surprised if more than a few people told me that they had, as it was not a well-known level

Believe it or not, your LBC is referenced more than you think when it comes to Discussions about logic.

Really? That's unexpected, but cool

I might have to forum-search my name and see what comes up, I haven't been around for a while lol

Yeah... Now that I'm back to school after my break, I don't think this is going to happen. I really wish it could because I have it all figured out in my head, down to the time complexity of the two designs i could use... I'm just too busy. Sorry for getting ahead of myself :kz:2010-12-01 05:02:00
