A level being made as it's passed along between creators?

UPDATES:

When looking for this level after previous player published locked and copyable, the name is Dream Project by [Previous person's name] But of course after getting the key it should be easy to find anyways.
Please do not alter the name. It is just a working title for now.
Also, very important. My intro section has logic that activates right when you start the level, so when spawning into create mode, it will activate. Immediately rewind to pause it and leave the starting position. I have also Included with my first key a neat device given by Damaz. Use it to spawn where you wish to play-test your section only. No need to run through other people's areas. please pass this along with your key for people who don't already have such a thing. Hopefully most do already.

Theme: No real solid theme. The purpose of the level is to be a collage of talents. Disorderly, yet functional.

Thermo: Extremely important to keep this in mind. This level will be passed through 16 hands. We can't get to 10 and then run out of thermo. We have run into this issue already, and enemy AI takes up more thermo than needed. AKA Creature Brains. So no AI/Creature Brains

Glitches: May be used, just keep in mind Thermo. And they must also not break or interfere with what other's have already made and what other's after you will make as well.

Passing it along: When you are finished with your section and published, you must post so in here and give the next player the key/password. Next player must also confirm receiving here so I can keep the players list up to date with who is current level holder. Failure to post completion and key in 5 days will result in your slot being skipped over and moved to end of line, regardless if you have completed your section and published but forgot to post so in here. KEEP ALL OF US UPDATED HERE!!

Time Limit: You will have five days from the time the key is passed (whether or not you actually were here on LBPC to get it) to publish the level with your section added. That's published, not just starting it. We have 16 people to get through and want this done ASAP, especially with LBP2 around the corner. If you do not finish on time and publish, you will be skipped over and moved to the end of the line.
Note: Please try to finish as quickly as you can. You have 5 days, but you don't need to take the full time limit just because you can. These are only small sections, not a complete level you're making.

Materials: There was only minor consensus as to what materials we should use, so I had to go with most basic. We need to keep in mind of course thermo, so I limited to 6 materials that are used most often and most versatile. Sorry, there was lots of debate about DLC materials, so there will be no DLC used.

1) Basic Cardboard - Basic necessity
2) Blue Wood - Would have gone with basic wood, but more people asked for blue wood.
3) Grey Rusty Metal - We need a 'heavy' material, and Rusty Metal was just barely most popular
4) Basic Glass - Have fun
5) Dark Matter - A must
6) Dissolve - A must as well. Also functions as grabbable materials. Just paint over it for various colors.

Extras:
- Please try to recycle as much as you can. If someone used lights before you, try to use that same lighting fixture to save thermo.
- If this takes too long between contributors, time limit will be reduced. Honestly, 5 days times 16 people is over two and a half months. (if everyone took their full limit) Realistically, 2 nights should be enough to get just a portion of a level done.
- It will also go along much quicker if you could work at least a little bit on your section before it gets handed to you so you can just edit and hook yours in properly and get it passed along fast.
- Will post more bits and suggestions as they come along. Feel free to suggest things for this OP/Updates page.

Will get to later:
- We will need a name for this at the end before Publishing on my account.
- All contributors will be named in description and hearted.

Yeah, I'll partake.

My suggestion though, to stop the random kiddies from playing the level and just stealing it afterwards, would be to keep the levels locked, and send the keys to the next creator.
Also, perhaps agreeing on what materials we can use in the level, for the sake of saving on thermo would also be wise.

I'm pretty sure that this was done before on this site. However I'm not sure if they ever finished. I'd like to join in for sure. I can do little sections, but a whole level is to much for me. We need to agree on how many/which materials are to be used. Dark matter,Dissolve, 1 type of sponge are a must I think. Also there needs to be a distinct order. When one person is done creating they can send the key to the next person on the list. But yea I want in for sure! Didn't think about a key. Well, I have a keyroom already made I used often, so I'll put that to use again.

As for materials, we should each list materials we'd like to use and maybe the top 10 mentioned will be the official used ones. I'm sure dark matter's gonna be a guarantee. lol.
And yes, sections will relatively small for each one. maybe we can agree on a particular square area we each have allotted to us with temporarily marked borders.

But a major thing we must decide is if we want a normal flat left-to-right level, or if we'll take up and down into account so i can make the bordered areas in the form of an even grid.

This still won't happen for a while since we gotta plan this yet, so plenty of ideas or totally welcome.

And I don't really know who will publish the final product since I'm sure MM wouldn't like the same level being spammed even though it has various contributors. If I did I would certainly list all contributors in the description and heart them myself.

oh, and I don't think the level should be something with a story. More like a traps and puzzles level all the way through since too many writers and story contributors would make it into nonsense. xD Unless you would like the 'story' also being made in the same manner. Next guy continues story no matter how strange and unconnected it is to the previous areas.

Honestly, I think 8-10 days is a little too long. What if we had 20 people who went ahead and took those 10 days? That's 200days to finish a level even though each person is only responsible for a small portion. I imaged 5 days myself. But of course that's an issue we need to have larger agreement on for this project.

I'll add dissolve, but can't add a general wood and stone since one wood is already there (that you don't want) and I wouldn't know where to place your +1 for a stone once one gets listed.

Cause if it's like, a space theme, we wouldn't want plant materials, or like for a jungle theme, we wouldn't want those MGS metals. lol

I'm not too fussed with the materials, as long as i can have the 4 basics, Cardboard, Glass, Dissolve and Polystyrene. With them 4, i could easily make a good segment to the level.
By the way, are we having a storyline of some kind, or will each person just add on their section?

I don't see how we'll use this, I've only seen it used extensively in the actual Marvel pack.

I'm pretty sure he means the Rusty Metal, the one used a lot in the Construction Site.

5) Grey Rusty Metal

Not a bad material to use, it really depends on what type of level we're making here.

6) Carved Animals

Once again, it depends on what type of level we're making. Carved animals isn't a very versatile material though.

7) Beaded Fabric

I'm not sure what this material looks like.

8) Dissolve

I'm not even gonna say it...

Still undecided issues:

Who will publish Final Product?

I would say you should, it's your project.

Can we use glitches?

I think the layer glitch, theck materials, and thin gas should be allowed. Glitches don't really affect the thermo too much though, it depends on what material the object in question is.

Should we issue a time limit so nobody 'forgets' it or procrastinates and ends up making this project fail?

I think 5 days is reasonable, but if they don't meet the time limit they get moved to the back of the queue.

How many people should we cut this off at?

I was thinking about 8-12, depends on what sort of response we get.

I don't know if we should make temporary boundaries for the next creator. This could stifle their creative genius. Say if one person just wants to do a section where it goes straight up somehow. Or if one person wants to add a little race section or something. I think we should all just agree to not get out of control and bogart the thermo. And also, maybe instead of a "story" we could just have some guy give you a task. Kinda like how the king is at the beginning of the garden levels. Then if anyone wants add a little something they can. If not, then they don't have to. You are right about spamming the same level. That would be silly. I'd like to have a final copy to keep on my moon though if that's ok. I don't know about glitches. They are cool, but if everyone throws a bunch of em in there it might be heavy on the thermo too. I think that the extra layers glitch should be a "no" for sure. Jus some opinions. I don't really care which materials we use really. If I don't like the way it looks I'll just sticker over it. We already are voting. You just say which ones you would like to work with and if the same material is mentioned more than once I go +1 (1,2,3..) and the top picks will be our agreed upon materials.

In my opinion we should not place too strict limits that would potentially prevent some great ideas emerging.
I think that best results we would get by giving current creator a responsibility of keeping thermo under control.

Yea now that the affected mentioned it there are lots of glitched materials that look like a certain one but can have the properties of just about anything else. For those of you here that don't know about it check out this level. "Garden of Goodies" by Aya042. A lot of good stuff there and it's all smearable except for 2 things I believe. But yea we need to get a definite list of materials so we can get this started. I've already made a couple little things I might put in the level. No theme. Sorry. This level is essentially a collage of talents. There maybe be a bit of uniformity, but pretty much only in materials. The talent to use the materials is what we're focusing on and want to mix.

But c'mon people. Please list what materials you'd like to use to I can tally up all the ones mentioned so the top selections can be our set.

I'd be up for being a part of this, and the project that I think was mentioned earlier about having a collaboration with many creators was the "15 levels in one", I myself was a part of it and it was very cool to be a part of it. I would put much effort into whatever section of this level I get to. I don't have any problems with the current materials selected, but I want to make a suggestion, why not have all the basic materials for starters? Since most of them can be used and stickered to resemble other materials quite easily, plus it pretty much knocks out much of the really needed materials also. Looking forward to this dude! and because I heard it brought up, I think that the cow-glitch (looks like one with proporties of another) materials count as whatever material they act like.

So for those of you who want to use glitched materials i asked Aya.


I was wondering if I used basic wood and then used a cow-glitched basic wood with DM attributes would the thermo register it as 2 different materials (basic wood and DM) or would it be considered the same material.


It would count as the same material from the materials thermo POV. It simply measures the number of unique rendering textures.

meaning wood glitched with the properties of DM would be the same to the thermo as regular wood and vice versa.

You can find a cow-glitched version of any of the materials we choose in Aya's Garden Of Goodies level.

We would still need to agree with what materials we can use. This means we can have any material property we want though.

I for one think that the one glitched object that has to be crossed out is theck gas at least. We need to keep this playable to those affected by the TheckX glitch as well O and for my vote on what materials I really want it would have to be:

I'm pretty slow at creating so I've been working on mine already. I hope I have it mostly ready when it comes to my turn so I can just plug it in, touch it up, and send it to the next person. What's a reasonable length? Like 3 little sections? I don't think it's gonna affect the thermometer that much either once there is a bunch of other stuff in the level. All by itself it only takes 3 bars on the thermometer, but you know how it always jumps up when you first start creating.2010-12-02 02:31:00

Yeah, I'm like 90% done with mines. I'll finish it tomorrow night and have it up by Friday morning with the key and passcode for the next guy. And I really hope more people are working at least a little bit on theirs before they get it so we can get this done before LBP2.

When finished, do I send a level key back to you, Iudicium, to put in your key room, or do I create my own?

At this point, everyone should have their own keyroom. But if you can't make one just send me a PM and we'll figure out a way to pass the key, even if using my own keyroom again.


I think this should be stressed to all the creators involved in this project. This would make the whole process go entirely faster and it would get this out in record time if we all can manage it before lbp2

I'll put that in the OP.

Alright, my bits done, the level key is in a vault level, and I've sent a PM to rodfocov.


For my bit, I took heavy inspiration from a certain segment in the Industrial Castle from Castle Crashers. And used just over one section of the thermometer. My segment is actually just one platform that moves, most of my contribution is off-screen.

I also just left Damaz's checkpoint thingy in there, instead of making it a prize. It's right at the end of my segment, with a big dark matter arrow and a magic mouth on it - You can't miss it. x3


Oh, yeah, and a level & author heart for iBubek for his awesome Lock Box level.

It was deliberate. x3

I was going over means of making my own vault level, but didn't really have any ideas at the time - your little example is great, should be easy to re-use the same general concept.
In saying that, there's nothing wrong with yours, I just prefer to use my own stuff. But, just for helping me out, and inspiring me, fancy sending me some of your level keys as objects, and I'll stick them in my current and perhaps future levels, where relevant?

Why, back in my day, we didn't have half a week to create a 40 second section of a level - we only got an hour to finish the whole thing!
And we didn't have none of this fancy popit business, either! We had to go and find our materials! And we couldn't hover, either! We had to run about, grab stuff and set up scaffolding if we wanted to build on-top o' stuff!

And automatic motors? Forget it! We had to wind them up!

Although I am not in this, may I suggest that right after everyone finishes their portion, someone goes in and material changes (Where Necessary!) the whole level within the material choices we brainstormed, ensuring a bit more uniformity? I said to Iudicium I'd have this sorted by Saturday, but TBH, it only took me 20 minutes. I've effectively just sped the platform up, with nothing else in the way or whatever. I take up slightly over half a thermo segment. x3
I couldn't really think of any other... challenge for the platform, so it's now more of a neat intro for the next dude, than an obstacle itself.

I del'd the previous level in haste after noticing that it was left unlocked. Fortunately, I think I got it before anyone played it.
As a result though, you'll need another key. Same keyroom and pass code as before.

I just reread the OP and I think I can give you a quick fix to the logic being activated as soon as you enter create mode.
That checkpoing is the one you are given when you first go into a level right? All you would have to do would be to move it above the play field, glue some dark matter to it, put another checkpoint where it was before (type of checkpoing does not matter, but whatever one you want, put it there) then just attach an inverted grab switch set to "on", this functions the same way that my testing level checkpoing does, and better yet, you can have the "creator entrance" checkpoing set above where ever you left off, making it easier to just go right back to creating when you need to. And the test checkpoing will still work as well, but the order in which they are placed will affect which one activates first.
So do this in this order (whoever has the level at this point)
1) delete the test point (if you have one) and make sure the "creator entrance" checkpoint is done first
2)then do the inverted grab level entrance checkpoint
3) then you are free to use the "test" checkpoint.
Do it in this way bc the level will activate whatever one is placed last. Hope the helps

Would also like just a role-call since two in a row have been passed over now, I need to make sure everyone is still on board with the project. That was today so we can still get this straightened out without much confusion and two branching versions of this project. This is why I ask everyone to keep us updated in this thread.

Bubzee you used the "map unfurl" sound on your cardboard swings. Also I have changed the Mm music pack 1 "tea by the sea" to "metropolis interactive" to stop the DLC problem from arising again.

Phew,... After about 3 1/2 to 4 hours of work, i'm finished with the level, mainly due to my pesky elevator playing up, but it's fixed now.
Also, i have passed the level onto Tom so he can add his piece to it.
And, i can take New Year's day off! Woo!

Also, Thanks Assassinator for leaving the glitched materials! they helped me keep the consistent cardboard theme!

Ive added my bit. Couldnt do too much coz ive got the flu, no energy = not a lot of creativity lol. the level still has about half the thurmo left, so theres alot of room to fill .

I've sent waD_Delma a PM with the code for my key room.

Loving the level so far, cant wait to play the finished thing. xD

Unfortunately I have to pull out as well. I don't have the time I thought I would. Sorry. I will definitely play it though. I can't wait. Hopefully we who are leaving the project can provide one useful thing to the project by leaving. A shorter line means the project gets done faster.

Alright guys. I got the level which I had never seen up until tonight and I must say it's AMAZING! Great work guys.

So it's official, we're continuing it with LBP2. I already copied it after getting the key from Delma who was the last person to post that they completed their section.

I don't know how much thermo there is since I can't go into edit mode because there's DLC (the music pack) which shouldn't have been there since we agreed no DLC =. But I'm sure the Thermo is fine and if at the end there's still some left, we'll do some backtracking to those who contributed to add more or expand ideas they had before but didn't use because of fear of running the thermo.

So get back in here and lets finish this thing. Don't let your efforts go to waste <3

I'll copy over to my LBP2 profile soon and post up for next person.

I checked with LBP2 what is used from music pack and it is "Bar Line" that is innocent black line.

There is also used "Brushed Steel" form Incredibles and sound effect from Metal gear solid.

I am trying to hunt them down.

Got the key from Iudicium86 last wednesday, I finished my part last night and published the collab level at my south pole, along with a key room next to it. Level is looking wonderful and we're almost done. ^-^ thermo is only HALF full full at this point. So when it's done if anyone wants to add to their sections or put in things but didn't when we were afraid of thermo, then feel free to come to me when it's done since I will be holding the completed version until publishing.

I'll also be doing another one of these later, but with a more cohesive theme/story.

****! Sorry guys. =( comp broke down and was out for nearly 4 weeks and the past week has been in and out of repair for small issues.

I currently have the latest version of this level and thermo is only half-full. we've gone through all the contributors already and I'm about ready to add the final section. If anyone wants to edit/add to their own section since we have plenty of thermo left, let me know in the next 48hrs. I will be doing the last section after this and publishing with all your names and hearting.
