iMac and Blu-Ray?

Archive: 5 posts

If all goes to plan I'll be getting an iMac for my 18th birthday in June next year. Once I get it I plan to be using it for many years to come so I want to future proof it as much as possible. The latest iMacs are already very capable machines and have plenty of upgrades available, even including the option of a 256GB solid state drive.

However the lack of Blu-Ray compatibility concerns me. Blu-Ray is already becoming quite popular and is quickly replacing standard DVD's when it comes to movies. I've done a bit of research on a few Apple forums and have come across some interesting information.

According to what I've read Mac OS does not support Blu-Ray which is understandable. Both Vista and Windows 7, however, do support Blu-Ray and I plan on installing Windows 7 on my iMac anyway so that should be all good. I still need an actual Blu-Ray drive though and read that people have bought external Blu-Ray drives and connected them to their Macs via a USB cable.

I'm wondering if this sounds like a viable solution.

Sorry but... bump. Yes I am pretty sure you can hook up a external Blu-ray drive and use it in Windows 7. But I would highly recommend building a Hackintosh off of one of this guys tutorials tutorials tonymacx86.blogspot.com has (Hack Pro, Hack Mini, etc.) And with a few extra Kexts and tweaks Blu-ray could be able to work in Mac OS X 2011-02-19 04:44:00

I wouldn't be able to build Hack unfortunately, let alone try to fix anything. I'm saving up for a Mac Pro instead, this will make swapping/adding HDDs, GPUs etc quite easy. Very expensive Mac but they do hold a good resale value plus I'll have applecare to fix all my problems. I'll either just put the Blu-Ray drive in the second optical bay, take out the original DVD drive and replace it with the Blu-Ray, or just keep the Blu-Ray as an external and use it in Win7 via bootcamp or VM if that's possible.

Blu-Rays are not "quickly" taking over DVDs. DVD sales still outnumber Blu-Ray sales 10 to 1. Only reason why most of those are there is because of the PS3. People are quickly getting tired of buying a new format. I personally would say don't worry about it. My strategy is to skip ahead to what will most likely become the next medium: pure digital format. I have an external hard drive set aside just for movies.2011-02-19 06:55:00

They've replaced DVD's pretty quickly here. But yes, pure digital media will be the way forward, I just like to have my options open.
