Rainbow Warrior - A LittleBigPlanet 2 Side-Scrolling Adventure

Hopefully that poster got some attention, and here's where I'll explain.

[B]Overview
Rainbow Warrior, titled after the LBP1 song, is a story that plays out much like one of my favorite game series: Paper Mario. Now if you don't see any resemblance already, allow me to continue to explain. This series will consist of 7 or 8 playable levels (undecided as of right now) each cleverly named based off a color. Throughout your colorful adventure, you will meet and team up with multiple sprites who will assist you in your journey. Essentially, this is a linear RPG, and battles will take place in real time.

Note: Almost nothing is finalized as of yet. Multiple elements of the series are subject to change.

Story

Not many details yet, but: You're on an adventure as a "Rainbow Warrior" in hopes of destroying whatever is taking the color from the world. Sorry bout the bad, overused idea, but yeah. It'll probably change. I've mostly only focused on how I'll go about making the sprites/puzzles/scenery/logic and not so much the story yet. xD

You will visit 7 or 8 different playable levels:
1. Green Gardens
2. Red Rain Forest
3. Blue Bayou
4. Yellow Yardang (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yardang)
5. Orange Ocean
6. Purple Planet
7. White Wasteland

Pink Peninsula (or Plateau) will take place after Yellow Yardang and Orange Ocean if I decide to make it. Please leave feedback on whether it should just be the 7 listed, or 8. If you vote 8, please say if you want Plateau or Peninsula. :o

Art
Now the poster displays the art style quite well. Each of the levels will be made entirely out of white hot glass (because it has physical properties unlike holograms). Hologram animations will make up sprites, scenery, and other movements. The view of the level will be completely flat, much like a front view in create mode. The reason for this is because I don't want the thickness of the white hot metal to make it look...well, thick. We'll see though. Nothing is finalized after all. Also, all music will be custom and composed by myself.

Sprites
Sprites are your adorable companions that will literally follow you throughout the story. Now, each sprite comes with its own ability, as seen in the poster of the first three I've decided to reveal. Blitz is able to offer hints throughout the levels in case you get stuck. She'll also offer tips on defeating certain enemies, most notably, bosses. Laurelia has the ability of controlling sunlight. Now I won't reveal what exactly this does yet...because I'm still deciding how far I want it to go, so sit tight for a tech demo in the future. Dewey hails from the Orange Ocean and has the ability of spraying water from his mouth (he has one, just not when he's sitting still). You're able to cycle through the sprites and solve puzzles this way.

Note: Sprite designs are not finalized.

Yup. Lol. The tech demo has custom music already. Although that music isn't necessarily for this project. It's for another one, but I felt it fit well enough and I didn't want to use Sleepyhead (which would have been my second choice).

Definitely. It's my main solo project when LBP2 comes out. It'll be possibly the only project that appears on my actual account (as all the other ones will require a goo 10 levels or so, and since we only have 20 slots, I'll definitely need another account to hold them all).

Woot! I guess when you are recreating it you can amp up some stuff too!
So... do you use sackboy/sackbot in this, or will you be creating a character that will be Super Epic.

I plan on using a sackbot to avoid problematic animations (especially mirroring the character to move left and such since just one sprite is messy enough). However I got a comment on the level saying that the sackbot I used didn't fit in at all. I'm planning on making the story explain why he doesn't look like the other stuff, which I've already though up.

See, you live in this "real life" city type thing and like...get shifted to this alternate world where he meets Blitz. He doesn't transform, and as much as I hate "the chosen one" story lines, he's been spoken of in this alternate world's lore as "not like us and the one who will save us". Which is why he isn't neon outline stuff. xD

How about instead of being the one to save them, they cast sackboy out of their town for being different, he then goes on a perilous journey to try and get back home, with the help of the of the good-hearted that is.2010-11-27 23:48:00

I had an idea a bit like this for LBP1. You started as a Red Warrior, and had to go to every colour in the rainbow to recruit someone, when go to some place and create a rainbow road to the special place, where black had taken all the kings of the other colours hostage, and save them. Never really left my head though, and this sounds much better.

Also, I don't think I'd be able to make this without adding the song 'Rainbow Warrior' (though does LBP1 music work in the BETA, I don't know)

Nah, LBP1 music doesn't work in the Beta. I would totally use it though. It will make an appearance in the series though. Most likely the prologue and the epilogue. I take too much pride in the fact that I make custom music to use something premade (unless it's super good).

@SackRacer: Yeah, Shadowriver told me to link magic mouths instead, which I ended up doing. It doesn't matter anymore because as I work on the updated tech demo level (it's like...an actual level too) I won't be needing Laurelia to say any of that stuff. xD I've got a comment from a friend of mine who asked if I was going to be making the whole series in neon and hologram materials. I said yes and he said it would probably look better if it wasn't...what do you all think? :o I plan to make every level 1 color aside from the sprites and enemies (which will be white). I guess I'll put up the Green Gardens tech demo once I finish it and ask for opinions then since I plan to get it recorded, so...more opinions. Yay! :3

I've got a comment from a friend of mine who asked if I was going to be making the whole series in neon and hologram materials. I said yes and he said it would probably look better if it wasn't...what do you all think?

Hologram material only is a lot nicer than a mix, it would look kind of weird if at one instance you were standing on Hologram material then the next instance you were standing on sponge material.
Maybe it would be cool if you made a few objects out of regular material, because those too are from the sackperson's world. (Maybe turn them into the special objects or keys you need to get in order to get to the final boss.)

love the poster and loved the demo when I played it...only complaint is that everything is supposed to be flat but we still have sackboy around...would be cool if you could create a flat main character as well (if its not too much trouble) but other then that i look foward to seeing this progress and cant wait to see more sprites2010-12-01 11:15:00

Assuming I don't ditch the sackbot. :x Now I don't plan to use a holo character for the beta at least. Too much work just to lose it all. I will be considering it for the series itself...so...It seems like a lot of people don't like how the sackbot doesn't blend with the environment. Perhaps if I explain WHY he doesn't people will be more accepting, but I understand. So I'll be thinking about that quite a bit.2010-12-01 20:57:00

If you don't want to use a sackbot/person then maybe you can make a simple white hologram character. You can replace White Wasteland with Pink Plateau so that you don't get a character that is the same colour. Maybe you can make it so your character can fuse with the sprites to get powers to fight???2010-12-02 21:17:00

well some sprites will just have what I'm calling "battle abilities". Heck Laurelia and Dewey's abilities can be attacks (Laurelia can like...hurt creatures of the dark or something while Dewey can hurt fire things. o.o). I'm not so sure I want to replace White Wasteland, to be honest, I've already got it planned out. :x I'm thinking I'll go ahead and put Pink Plateau just before Purple Planet though because I have an idea on how to create a link between those two levels. (So 8 levels to play, 10 total including cutscene levels).

Now I have a clever way of getting around a white protagonist, but the only reason I'm hesitant on that is because of The_Lil_JoKeR's Chalkboy level. See, he's a friend of mine here and on the games themselves and I really don't want to "steal" his idea. :/ P.S. The art style for this game wasn't necessarily inspired by Chalkboy. It's mostly just inspired by Super Paper Mario. Like...every aspect. Even music will be Paper Mario-esque (think a lot of E Piano for the music which produces a music box type sound).

This is what I thought of last night. xD It shouldn't be too difficult, no, but I don't plan on making it for the tech demo. Maybe I could make the basic outline so I can mention "This is what the character will look like when LBP2 actually comes out."

xD I didn't actually plan on voice acting...mainly because it doesn't fit with the style to be honest. Maybe in the "real" world it could work, but cutscenes in the color world just don't seem like they should have actual voices.

And that link is most likely to Shadowcrazy's voice acting level (which I've heard it quite good ;D). I still have to check it out so I'll queue it up.
