Explosive Adventures - A Bomb Based Platformerkirbyman62
http://yfrog.com/j2icon0kpExplosions and booms await in this Canyons-set platformer, themed around the little wonders that are bombs. They've been recieving a lot of negative reputation lately, so I thought I'd make a level that focouses on their positive points.
http://lbp.me/v/ve5-93

Ok, now my little description is over, here are some screenshots for my newest creation:

http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/665/bomblevel3.jpg

http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/104/bomblevel4.jpg

There's also a video, courtosy of AssassinatorRFC! Thanks!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2WTELPveCc

There are also four secrets scattered around the level. Find them all and you can go into the cage at the end, which leads to a secret race! Good Luck!

A very big thank you to nagrom_17 as well, as he tested this very well and hopefully ironed out any problems.

Also, to finish, a quick notice about F4F:

While I will participate in F4F, I can only go on my PS3 for an hour and a half a day (which I don't want to spend entirely playing levels) , five days a week, and the time I can go on my computer is slightly limited as well. So I will play your levels, but they may take a little longer than usual. Sorry

Thanks for taking a look, and any comments are appreciated

Hehe...... I have time limits as well........ I get about 3 hours if I do all my homework before hand

Anyways, I'll check out your level as soon as I can get on my PS3........ which may be a while!

The screenshots are good, I think that they give a good inside as to what the level features

Thanks! Got any levels I could give feedback for while I wait?

Also, updated the main page with talk of the secrets. Would people like me to add a guide on how to find them in a spoiler, or just leave it and let people find it for themselves?

Uh, now you mention it, could you check out my LBPC Roast?

PSN: Aquila_Shock-99

There's a thread for it, I think I put a link for it in my sig........ Dunno

I think you should leave the secrets hidden, it gives it a more proffessional quality lke the legend DrunkenFist_Lee does, and comph does it alot in Aperture Science/Labs.

Or atleast wait until people decide they really want to find the secrets, then you could put a few weak visual clues in the level. I wouldn't properly reveal their locations.

Hope this helps!

Original obstacles, I like it! I haven't seen a combination of underwater plus bombs either. The NPC is charming and the explanations are clear.

I had a bit of trouble at the invisible wall, though. Something blocked me there and it wasn't clear to me that I needed to jump into the pipe to fall underground. Also, the big sponge that you need to blow up with timed explosives.. it took me a lot of bombs. Perhaps a few too many. I felt the number could be cut by one third to feel right.

But overall, had a blast!

Thanks. The point with that was that you could walk over it after a while, but prehaps it does need tweaking.

Could you explain the first bit a bit more? I can't really gety where you mean.

Also, I'll play your level and mutant_red_peas, so expect something on them soon

Also, there is a visula guide to the secrets

Feedbakz!!11!!shift!!

I enjoyed the level, but I felt there were a couple points that could be improved. The underwater section felt very out of place, and the level was a bit bland in some areas. I had the same problem as Antikris, the invisible walls were a bit confusing, I'd recommend putting and actual wall. There were some positives though, some of the gameplay was fun, I liked how you used explosives as a a subsitute for dissolve in some cases. Overall, :star::star::star:, I just felt there were some areas that needed tweaking.

Would you midn doing the level in my sig for F4F? Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback on my level! Greatly appreciated

It'll be a few more days before I go on my PS3 again...

Bit of a shame 'cos I need to finish my roast so that'll be me making levels till like, 14th of December, then another project until 24th December, then Christmas!

Then more of my own projects on LBP1 till LBP2

OK then, thanks for that. I'll work on the walls and play your level tonight. The thing with the graphics is that I didn't want them to look overdone, but I imagine some areas are bland, so I'll freshen them up a bit.

Played it finally

I just want to make 1 point very clear:

I don't think you made best use of all 3 layers.

Now that's just my opinion but that's the whole point in a feedback.

So, find something to put into the layers. Could be gaps in wood with 3 point bubbles in, who knows. But just make use of them. it's what separates the decent levels from the potential spotlights. Well it's not, but you get the point

Dismissed

Joke

I think you've cornered more undiscovered uses for useless bombs (how much we hate them and their survivals...) and squeezed them into 1 big chunk. That's a good thing BTW

But that chunk doesn't make use of all 3 layers! (no matter how awesome it is)

Ah a level containing bombs and explosives, without being killed by them in a survival way.
This level's going on my list to try out, for sure. I love the explosive levels!

Thanks guys. I'll take that into account. Thinking about it, a lot of the good levels have this, don't they? I'll add this for sure.

I really shouldn't have published it now, because it's really awkward timing, but I have to say this:

I will have no PS3 access until at least Thursday, so no edits or F4Fs can be done until then. Feel free to leave feedback still, but I won't play yours until Thursday. Sorry.

Found something bad.

I got to the lift, go up, go to the bomb bridge, but I fall between two bombs, so I get killed. Then I respawn at the checkpoint before the elevator, but there is no way to get up.

Hm? I swear there was a checkpoint before the bridge, but I'll make it easier to activate.

EDIT: After playing it at my friends house, the same thing happened to me. There definatly was a checkpoint, where has it gone?

EDIT EDIT: Fixed it, and did some stuff with the layers. Nothing too amazing, but the level does look nicer now. Everything's back to normal with the F4Fs (though what's in the first post still applies).

Thx for reviewing my lvl, now heres mine for you:

pro
+ Well chosen materials, music etc. , they fit good
+ Many uses of bombs, I liked f.e. the bomb rain
+ Gameplay was ok

con
- I dont know how to say, that certain something was missing
- I had sometimes problems when i bombed the sponges in the ground away. The rest of the sponge felt down and blocked the way

The level was quite fun, but needs a bit work:

Seems to be the problem with a lot of my levels, they all feel a bit, empty. I'll keep working on it and try and break the pattern. As for the last point, do you mean at the end of the level, or the beginning?

Hey! I played the level  You know why

Yeah I got some constructive feedback:

The general idea was really good. Beats a bomb survival anyday!
I liked some of the ideas used in the level.
My first con has been picked up by other people and that is that the layers use could be better. Just add some bombs in the background!
Also when you had to jump down I landed on "Pedro" the bomb and blew him and me up. Funny because I got it on camera

hope that helps with improvements! and I'll send you the link on Wednesday!

Could you F4F my "Over the fence" (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=41005-quot-Over-The-Fence!-quot-2-player-minigame) level? Thx!

Feedback

Positives:
+Platforming was okay
+Idea of the bomb thing was pretty good
+Obstacles were good
+Unique

Negatives:
-Part were the bombs fall and you have to fly through them without getting hit while on the jetpack you have the bombs just emitting out of the air without it coming out of anything.

Sugguestions:
-Might want to have the bombs kind of drop out of a big pipe like the one near the end where you have to shoot the bomb to blow the floor open.

And by the way the last part where you shoot the button to make the bomb fall down and you shoot the bomb to blow the floor up. I blew the floor up but when I fell down at the checkpoint I was stuck in between the middle of the red material you blow up and had to end the game there.

Overall the level was very good::star::star::star::star:

OK then. You reached the end, so don't worry about that. It seems that area is a problem, I'll go over that. I'll also add the pipes idea.

Also, thanks to the miracle of LBP.me, all those who left levels have had them added to my Queue. You'll get feedback today, most likely.

EDIT: Added most of what I could remember, like a few stuff in the extra layers and some pipes and things. I didn't have access to my computer while I was playing LBP, so I couldn't play the levels. Sorry guys, I'll do it before the week is up.

Oh yeah, bombs.
I've just tried your level: overall it's good, but it could be improved in many ways.
Let's begin with visuals: there is a lack of details, and a lack of materials. Why don't you pay more attention at particulars and visual side? All the level is repetitive talking about graphic.
Then, about the gameplay: some nice ideas, like the one where you have to stomp the bomb at the right time. But many parts were too repetitive: the one were you emitt bombs from the pipe and then shoot them with the Paintinator: I had to repeat the passage 4-5 times, it's a lot. I think that 2 times are enough.
The style of the level, focused on bombs, it's cool, but you have to do some improvement to make this a really cool level.
I gave it :star: :star: :star:, but I'm sure you can do better in your future levels
I'd like if you tried my level for F4F: "The Long Night of Mr. Krom" or "Mm Squad's Christmas mission: Protect the Pack!" by xDante95x. You can find the thread clicking on "My Creations" under my nickname. Just choose one of them and play it, then give me a little feedback

Great idea for a level, nice job! Just thought I'd leave some criticism based on the video!

I liked the idea of bridges and swings made from explosives, but a few of them didn't explode once you'd passed them! =( They should, and I personally think a Sensor Switch would be better than a button, it would surprise the player!

I don't like the race segment; it's two jumps. =/ I'd either make it longer or take the race away altogether, not much point in it really!

The underwater segment was a tad long, I think it'd be more effective to get to the Time Bomb puzzle quicker. There was a bit of swimming beforehand, I'd add some obstacles so that the player is doing more than just swimming. Could you have Collision Explosives floating up fast enough that they blew up when they hit the player? Just an idea I had, dunno if it would work. Also, the Time Bombs are very hard to see underwater, I think you should make your own so that they're more visible, more original and more fitting-with-the-theme.

What was the point of having to go behind the elevator? No offence but I thought that was a bit annoying more than anything else and I couldn't see any point to it. Sometimes simplicity is better!

The part where you're on a jetpack and those bombs are falling didn't really seem fair. There doesn't seem to be a proper way through that the player could figure out. Also, the fact that you could see them spawning didn't look too good, and the same goes for the mine cart. They'd be better popping out from behind something, like the bombs drop out of tubes and the cart emerges from a cave!

Other than those bits, this level was awesome! Loved the design, really cool! Also the paintinator segments were brilliant, very well thought through! You know the bit where you shoot an explosive and a rock falls that you can jump on to continue? I think that should have been longer and you could expand on the idea somehow!

Good luck with your future levels, keep up the good work! Don't be concerned with F4F, I didn't actually play your level (internet issues) so I hardly think I deserve it! xD

I'm not entirely sure why I did that. I made a secret race if you found all the secrets that you could do, but that's still quite short. I guess I'll try, but I'm not sure how to do it.

That could be arranged. Quite a nice idea, I'll incorporate it.

Also, the Time Bombs are very hard to see underwater, I think you should make your own so that they're more visible, more original and more fitting-with-the-theme.

Yep, didn't like using story ones, plus it adds and extra material (cardboard). I'll work on that too.

What was the point of having to go behind the elevator? No offence but I thought that was a bit annoying more than anything else and I couldn't see any point to it. Sometimes simplicity is better!

I couldn't think of any other way, I feel you needed something blocking the front, otherwise you can jump out, the lift goes on, and you have to restart, which normally ends in quitting instead.

I made it random, so it was a challenge. I felt the rest of the level was quite easy. Swerving back and forth is key. Prehaps I'll slow it down a tad though. Also, I recieved a comment on the pipes thing eairlier, I've already fixed that. Not with the minecart, mind, I'll work on it.

Other than those bits, this level was awesome! Loved the design, really cool! Also the paintinator segments were brilliant, very well thought through! There are plenty of other ways you could do it; you could put the elevator in the back layer and have a thin layer door in front of it that closes when it's moving. You could put it in the front layer and have a door in one of the side walls that closes when you jump in. I'd look at what other people have done in their levels, or look up some elevator tutorials on Youtube!

OK, I've added some underwater hazards (mines and some impact explosives going from bottom to top), moved the lift to the back (which means the secret area has moved), made an attempt at making the cart section look nice (not very successful though).

I tried implementing a bit more paintinator by having you blow up a bomb blocking the pipe in the bit where you have to pull both switches. I shot the bomb, and the entire level fell apart. So that's a no-go for now.

- Timing puzzle. You press the button, run right, but if you grab too early you layer switch foward.
Plus you have to reset the switch manually. Connect a spring to it, so the player doesn't have to.
+ Jump platforming. There is not enough in LBP.
+ Cacti.
+ Paintinator + bombs = cool.
- Slow lift. I would double the speed.
-+ Third hidden bonus? Give me another hint? Because I have no idea.
- If you fall in the hole (@ shoot button, then bomb), you need to pop yourself.
+ Wrestler hint for bonuses. Great idea.

Cool level.
Worth checking out!
Bombs are always fun in full level form!

---
EDIT: Yeah, I saw the wrestler dude to the right above that jetpack/bomb section, but I didn't know what to do at all.
I tried using the bombs to blow up that circle next to him, but that didn't lead to anything.
No need to review any levels in return.

OK, a spring should be easy enough. I found the lift glitches a heck of a lot if it goes fast (did you notice the handle of the switch became disconnected and started hovering aboove the base ever so slightly? It's a lot worse if the lift is faster). Seems everyone's liking my paintinator and bomb idea, and glad you almost found all the secrets! For the third one, did you notice the wrestler next to the checkpoint after you use the jetpack to avoid the bombs?

Also, would you like me to play any of your levels for F4F?

Edit in reply to your edit: Tried opening your popit? Prehaps I'll change it if it's to hard, but I'd say it's the simplest one.

Edit 2: Tried the lift, and had no problems at all. LBP, you can be weird sometimes. It's now 20 seconds quicker, a whole 40%

I also have quite a bit of thermo left (just under 3 lines left, including the very top one), if anyone has any ideas (the level space itself is quite full mind, the start is almost as far left as possible and the finish is as far right as possible). I might just leave it for slightly faster loading times.

Okay, having now played the level I can say that it's very tricky! Lots of precision jumping, and I was extremely lucky in getting past the falling bombs. It looks cool and has some gameplay I haven't seen before.
The race gates are still pointless, maybe throw a puzzle in between?
The underwater time bomb is still hard to see, I knew it would spawn but still didn't spot it first time.
Some checkpoint won't activate unless you jump in front of them, they could be moved down a bit or have a sensor switch put on them to activate them easier.
Overall it was fun to play, if not a little nerve-wracking! I look forward to your future levels!

Thank you

Is that good or bad? I can't really tell. I guess I wanted it to be harder because of all my comments of my previous level "Puzzle World" saying it was too easy, but I still find it quite easy. Perhaps it's because I made it.

Any suggestions? I'm really struggling to think of anything :/

Woops, forgot that :/ I'll work on it.

Will do

Thanks a lot, very much appreciated. I actually have one more LBP1 level, but I'm unsure whether to publish it or not. I like to have someone play a locked version, report any bugs, I fix, repeat (the very helpful nagrom_7 did that for this one, but he hasn't come on in a while), and with LBP2 3 days away for some, no-one's going to want to. Perhaps I'll just publish it it and ask for bug reports in the comments/levle thread.

Good level, almost ran back to the right where the elevator lets you out and had to redo that area, not sure if you left it open like that on purpose, tought it would be cool if you had a box that was like a shredder that the mine carts feel into and emitted out steel shreds on the other side instead of them just hitting the ground and then vanishing. Also that underwater wall you blow up seemed to take a little bit too long to destroy (flowwise).

((P.S. this is not feedback, just posting a quick comment)

Thanks, it's helpful either way

I've redone the underwater bombs and now they are red (hopefully easier to see), and have three bombs inside, meaning it should only take two to blast through the door, speeding things up.

As for the mine carts, I was going to set the emmitter in LBP2 so when they are destroyed they explode, as if the bombs it's carrying are going off.
