Analog-signal plotter

Archive: 9 posts

So Clay (aka c_mckamey ) and me (but majority of it is his work, i made only few minor components) build functional analog signal plotter, allowing to represent analog signal in graphical form. Plotter receives X and Y signal value via wireless logic, you can use it in many ways, for example to build oscilloscope graph (1 axis signal on timeline) or X-Y graph. For the demo we prepared few circuits, steps of "Simple" Example from first part of Rtm233's Analog signal blog (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/entry.php?2069-Analogue-Logic-1-Fundamentals) and inputs of Analog Stick and Sixaxis on X-Y graph, so here video:

Clay plans to publish it with more demo circuits and other stuff and he gonna make wider thread about it ;]

So you can switch between functions using wireless logic? Very cool. This also gives me an idea, maybe someone could create a logic kit of some sort composed of premade logic "blocks" that can be put together in any combination using wireless logic! 2010-11-24 13:54:00

Thanks so much for your help putting the finishing details on this and thanks also for making this video. I have been trying to explain this device to people in chat and failing at it. I think the video makes it much clearer some of the things the plotter can do.

I had the idea for this thing while I was generating and manipulating a set of waves to make an analog needle gauge move based on the input signal strength. I spent about 30 minutes building the various stages of the circuit and doing the math in my head and imagining the output wave. Once It was finished, when I tried to explain what the circuit was doing to anyone, most couldn't wrap their head around it even though it was actually a fairly simple concept. I needed a way to visually show the changes I was making to the signal, then it would be much easier to see the concepts.

Construction and working details will be included in the post when I publish the level but here are a few bullet points.

- I had already built a signal probe early in the beta that displayed the value of a signal from -100 to +100 in numerical form. You see part of those displayed above the sample circuits. The heart of the plotter is two of those probes, one for each axis.
- it's 100% wireless, both input and outputs. This let's you place tags anywhere on a chip and see the signal without stringing wires
- there are 400 tags in the X and Y axis
- there are 440 tag sensors in the X and Y axis
- there are four numerical displays of the signal one on each edge of the graph.
- the whole device, graph, and numerical displays take up about 1/2 a bubble of thermo.

As Shadow said, I plan on publishing a tech demo level soon with more example circuits and perhaps give this beast away as a prize once its complete. I will even include the analog needle gauge circuits I made that were my inspiration.

Thanks again Shadow for all you time with the video,
Clay

@Crashdance22, huh? but then you don't have control where wireless signal goes or else you change label or color inside microchip so simple microchips with I/O where you can choose to use wires or not would be better solution. Anyway people already ditributing there own chips2010-11-24 14:07:00

would be pretty cool to use this as detection for an in-game mechanic where you draw different shapes to appear ala Trine.2010-11-24 14:51:00

Clay was probing all the logic he could find with his probe..
now he got a plotter..

no wonder all my logic icons look like faces.
