i don't have beta but, i've heard the sequencer only got techno music so far...

would it be too much to ask for a violin, bas, trumpet, guitar and some realistic drum sounds...?

Theres synth organs but as everything synth it got misleading name dont remember witch one but i know i notice that in my instrument video

This come to Air category right? its the poorest category in beta (only one instrument) so they will probably be on full game

We already have:
String Instrument, Realistic Bass Guitar, Fairly Good Plucked Guitar, Rubbish Guitar "Distorted" and "Power Chords", And I personally think that the realistic Drum Kit is very good, aswell as having two beatbox kits, two "percussion" (random sounds like clicks, cowbells and other non typical drum sounds, and now a Baiyon drum kit aswell - supposedly put together by Baiyon.
And I dont know where this rumour came out that only techno music has been made, it just takes someone with a bit of musical talent who is willing to spend time on their tracks. The techno music that has been churned out is made by people with not a lot of time on their hands/not much musical knowledge.

I wish someone would make a video of some of the good music levels out there, maybe start with Asbestos101's since it has the biggest range of music genres IMHO

Well cog recorded my level for me which was cool of him, but since then i've added 5 more little diddys. (http://beta.lbp.me/v/1z67)

With our instruments so far you can definatly do dub reggae and jazz. I've seen some Rob Dougan style cinematic grunge done quite well, but it woulda' been hard.

At the moment the instruments are geared towards electro, drum n' bass and retro game music.

I can't wait for the full selection of instruments

Wait. So a wider selection is planned for the full game release? And here I was playing the beta just wanting a Music Pack 2 as soon as LBP2 released. lol

Yeah. Retro music seems to be the most common type out there simply due to the instruments available. Over half are synths which doesn't help at all. The Harpsichord and Ghost Strings sound exactly the same aside from a volume difference (at least to me. :/) However, they are quality instruments for what they are. I've only encountered some issues with stuff like the Concertina where it'll drop off after being sustained for a bit and go flat.

So yeah. Needs more orchestral instruments. And marimbas. Mmmm...marimbas.

Last night, using that new drum kit they added in that sequenced music in 1.02 I made some 80s house in the style of robert miles, my favourite drum kit so far, it's so good.

I hope the other fonts we don't have are as good, i'm sure they will be :O

wait hold up, you only got the baiyon stuff with the patch?
wierd, because i had them about a week before i downloaded patch, aswell as pick emitted object coming back too, dunno why

anyway back on topic:
I think we are bound to see more sequenced music items, like the song by baiyon, by guest musicians (possibly with more instruments) which will appear in level packs and downloadable DLC. Also i think Mm said somewhere that there was definitely more sequencer instruments to come, ill try and find the link for it

The trouble is that with a music sequencer, everything sounds electronic except a couple of instruments. I've not heard a decent guitar sound come from anything other than a real guitar. So what you would need to do instead of modulating the sound is to record someone playing different chords for different lengths of time - and there just isn't enough memory to be able to do that.

I want to see some proper breaks in there that are cut up for us to use. It would enable us to make some great music. I'm thinking Amen.
(If you don't know what the Amen break is it's actually used in LBP2 - during the song "Planitarium" by Squarepusher)

what do you mean breaks, like actual samples??
or some kind of program?? (dont mind me im clueless )
and also i dont think we can really blame Mm for the lack of good guitar sounds, from my experience with music programmes on the computer ive found that even the big well known brands like Logic , Fruity Loops , Reason etc etc dont have good guitar sounds. The problem lies in being able to stretch the sound realistically without warping the note, so unless Mm found someone willing to sit and play every note on guitar 128 times (or maybe more just a guess) we wont get a nice guitar sound anytime soon whether thats electric guitar, or acoustic

Well, the sequencer is definitely lacking in decent sounds unfortunately. We really do need more "wind" instruments, and orchestral instruments in general. I was trying to re-create a film theme last night and really had to do some MAJOR work-arounds to tweak any of the sounds to emulate anything orchestrated... and not with great success I might add. As stated, the guitars aren't very good at all. Several of the sounds are almost identical in sound, and many of them have horribly short sustain or go flat when trying to hold the note. We're also missing the ability to write in different time signatures, which is frustrating to try and work around.

With regards to "why" the sounds are poor, it really just comes down to lack of effort on recording and making good samples. It can be done, you just need someone who knows what they are doing to actually go in and do it imho.

As for all the electro stuff, I think it's mostly because that's the easiest type of music for people to try to do and most of the samples we have are geared toward that sound. The truth is that the sequencer is another tool, and it isn't going to start making musicians out of anyone. Even in the hands of a great composer and someone who "knows what they are doing" (there are a few members on this site), it still takes quite a bit of effort to yield great results from both the sequencer as well as the sounds. I'm really hoping that what we were given isn't an indication of future content where the sequencer is concerned. If this is the case, I wouldn't expect to see very much good original music coming from the sequencer (mostly the odd little gems from those who are naturals and take thier time)

Don't get me wrong, it's a decent little tool and an overall great addition to the game, I just think it needs a lot of work to be held in the same regard as all the other things Mm have given us. Seeing as it's the beta, I'm holding back a little bit of faith that this is something they are still working on making better. But the truth is that most of what we've seen from it is pretty poor quality, especially when compared next to the rest of the games amazingness!

A "break" is a part in a song where the music cuts away and the drummer does a solo fill. The break is then sampled and can be used as the drums in a song. They are used extensively in electronic music and hiphop to give a really nice sound (compared to e-drums). Often, the breaks are split up into their component hits and then rearranged (cut & spliced) to create a different rhythm.

Here is a break from The Winstons' "Amen Brother" in 1969:

And here it is used in a song from LBP2, Squarepusher's "Planetarium":

funny, as i was reading what you wrote i was thinking "oh yeah thats what squarepusher does" and then i scrolled down

But yeah if we had some kinda pre chosen breaks for us or if they could get over the whole copyright problem some kind of sampling system would be kool
question for anybody who might know: I believe there is some kind of time limit for samples, like lets say 15 seconds, where you can sample 15 seconds of a song for free and not have to pay anything - now i dont know if this rule is still in place, but if so how long are we allowed to borrow? and could Mm potentially implement this into the games music sequencer?
