Game of the Year - YOUR picks

Archive: 91 posts

With 2010 winding down and almost every game worth playing already released, I thought it would be fun to look back on what has been the best year ever in gaming and pick our favorite games. This list is meant to be YOUR personal GOTY picks. Your picks need not reflect the general gaming publics favorites or be influenced by silly reviews. Don't be afraid to add a game that you loved but everyone else hated, these are YOUR picks. Simply pick a total of 10 games (usually it would be 5-6 but this has been quite a year!) across all platforms. These must be games that you have completed or that you are currently playing through and feel comfortable adding prior to completion. It would also be great if you write a description of why it made the cut (but you don' have to). I understand some people will be getting games for Xmas and GT5 is coming this week so your list can be edited and modified as time goes on. If enough people respond to the thread then we could potentially sift through the data and find a GOTY winner as chosen by the LBPC community.

Below are my nominations which all come from the PS3/PSP (being a loyal minion of Sony and all that although most are multi-platform)

Yakuza 3

Old-school beat-em-up gameplay + big RPG influences + an insane amount of side quests/activities = one of the greatest gaming experiences I have ever had! The amount of variety in this game is mind-boggling. Almost everything can be used as a weapon and each has it’s own super-cool finishing move call a “Heat” action. There is a FULL leveling up system, in-game economy and surprises around every corner.

When not beating the crap out of people and following the very cool story of the Japanese underworld you can spend your time playing pool, fishing, entering underground fighting competitions with tons of different characters/rule sets/rings, golfing, at the batting cage, playing arcade games, bowling, playing Texas Hold ‘em, playing roulette, training under weapons masters, playing Japanese parlor games, playing darts with customizable player card THAT KEEPS RECORDS OF YOUR GAMES, the list goes on and on. None of it feels tacked on, all of it is fun (unlike GTA4…. This game was special and has me really looking forward to Yakuza 4 in Spring 2011.

Red Dead Redemption

R* were considered the kings of the sandbox game before RDR and with RDR they completely stole the genre for themselves. Whether sundown or sunset, riding across miles and miles of desert, surrounded by wildlife, gunning down enemies in glorious slow mo for the comfort of my trusty steed, it never got old. Hilarious characters? Check. Great voice acting and writing? Check. A living, breathing world to explore at your leisure? Check. Some of the best action to ever grace gaming? Check. Side-quests galore? Check. RDR is an immersive experience. Very rarely can a game make me forget I am playing a game and RDR achieved that multiple times. Oh, and riding into Mexico for the first time? One of the greatest moments in gaming history.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

Never would I have thought I a portable game could be a serious contender or GOTY. But this is no ordinary game. This is METAL GEAR. This is Kojima-san at his best. This is not only the best PSP game ever made but one of the greatest games I have ever played, period. Singing mechs, banana stick-ups, balloon popping, soldier-snatching parachutes, military base construction, troop management and missions, epic radio conversations, epic battles, epic comic book cutscenes, epic EVERYTHING! Just when you thought you have seen it all another curve ball is thrown at you. I can count on one hand the number of games I have played that offer this much variety. Best MGS game!? It’s within the realm of possibility 

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

After Castlevania 64 I had decided there will never be a good 3D Castlevania, it just wasn’t possible. I completely ignored every successive 3D release of the series until deciding to give LoS a chance with high hopes in my heart. I have 3 words: CASTLEVANIA. IS. BACK! This is the reboot the franchise so desperately needed. MercurySteam respected the franchise heritage but ultimately made the series their own and brought it into the modern age. Spectacular action, a lengthy quest, a sublime score, superb voice acting and the promise of a sequel. God of War clone? More like GoW KILLER!

Naruto SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2

Up until this game I had never read/played/watched anything Naruto related, now I am a fan. Yes, the game is that good. The visuals in this title are drop-dead gorgeous, it is like literally playing through an anime movie. Online battles play second fiddle to the epic “Ultimate Adventure Mode” that took me over 30 hours to play through! 40 playable characters, each with their own unique combos, jutsus, and radically different personalities. Boss battles have you performing QTE’s to arguably the most eye-popping, special-effects laden, explosive and scintillating action ever seen in a fighting game (or otherwise). Words cannot describe it, you must see it to believe it. Not only was this the biggest surprise of the year for me, but the surprise of this generation.

Call of Duty: Black Ops

In previous years I would have chuckled at the idea of someone putting a CoD game as a GOTY contender but I laugh no more. Treyarch did it. They crawled out from under the immense shadow of IW and proved all the doubters wrong by creating an immensely enjoyable and balanced online suite, an amazing single player experience and some really fun Zombie killing action. Every single game mode in this game is great and that’s really saying something. Judged as a total package, pound-for-pound, this is my favorite console FPS experience of all time.

Heavy Rain - MOVE Edition

When Heavy Rain was released early this year it was hard for me not to pick it up immediately amidst all the great reviews. I held out because I had a strong feeling MOVE support would be added later in the year and my patience paid off. In short, the MOVE version is the single most immersive gaming experience I have ever had. There were moments when I literally felt like I was in the game! More then just an interactive movie, this was one of the most refreshing and original games in a long time. A story that rivaled the best crime novels and silver screen thrillers, Heavy Rain is a game I will not soon forget.

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit

While most PS3 owners have been going bananas in anticipation of the release of GT5, another venerable racing franchise was recently resurrected from the dead. Burnout: Takedown was the first racing game I ever truly loved and I was overjoyed to hear Criterion was working on this NFS when it was first announced. Hot Pursuit has lived up to the hype. The cat and mouse gameplay is intense, especially when playing other people online. Driving through a timber forest in a Lamborghini Murcileago cop car at over 200 KM/hour is only beaten by driving along a winding mountain road at 4 am, during a thunderstorm, at 400 KM/hour in the ultra-exclusive Zonda Cinque. There are so many gorgeous cars to admire and crash at ultra-high speeds in glorious slow motion that leveling up becomes an addiction in anticipation of the next beast to tear across the tarmac with. The ingenious Autolog system is ahead of it's time and I suspect we will be seeing similar implementations in many games to come. GT5 is sure to be great but somehow I know Hot Pursuit will be my racer of choice.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

Out of all the new IP's created this generation the Assassin's Creed franchise is probably my favorite (yes, even more then Uncharted). Brotherhood continues the winning formula with a fantastic story, brutal action, a MASSIVE city to explore, tons of side quests and, for the first time ever, a very unique multiplayer experience. The single player experience would have been more then enough for me to give this a GOTY nomination but multiplayer really seals the deal. I don't care how many multiplayer games you have played, you have NEVER played anything like this. A whole bunch of things to unlock, cool character customization options and solo/team based game modes that are intense, cerebreal and very refreshing guarantee I will be playing this for a long time to come.

Gran Turismo 5

Within 15 minutes of diving into GT5 I knew I would love the game. Slick menus, an overwhelming amount of things to do, buying my first car, I was instantly hooked. But it wasn't until last night that I realized I was playing a masterpiece. I was going through a super-cool Special Event call the "Grand Tour". The third leg of this event was in Toscana where I was given a Lamborghini Murciel?go. The race starts at sunset which quickly fades to night. I can see no more then 2 meters ahead, the night sky is studded with stars, a spectacular fireworks show is going on in the background. Simply stunning. Rarely do games have this much depth and scope, the variety of things to do ridiculous. Whether taking amazing pictures of my rides that can be saved as JPEG's and exported to my HDD or racing online on a mountainous rally course where everyone is forced to use Mini- Coopers, the joys of GT5 are seemingly never ending. In my description of NFS:HP I said it would be my racer of choice. I was wrong. Simply put, GT5 is the best racing game I have ever played.

Honorable Mention

Bayonetta, Darksiders, GoW3, BFBC2, FFXIII, MNR, Bioshock 2, Mafia 2, DJ Hero 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, Dead Rising 2, Super Street Fighter IV.

Halo:Reach
Right now, this is the only game on my list, because I am not very up-to-date gamewise. But, I played Halo:Reach, and i have played most of the other halo games. And with the new options in the new halo, and the graphics, plus the fact that it is the only first person shooter that i seem to be able to get any skill at... It is one of my pics for GOTY. As of right now though... I have no other picks... because i don't play many newer games. T.T but, i will finish my list later.

My Picks you ask? they are as follows
Crackdown 2
Halo: Reach
AC Brotherhood
NFS Hot Pursuit
LBP2..... oh wait....

I hear you all saying "what about Black Ops?" no. I can't get into games online in Black Ops, and if I do, I always go back to level 9 when I turn my system off.

BAYONETTA

Even if the game on PS3 is not the awesome experience it is on the other machine, Bayonetta is the hell of the game.
It's crazy to the core, the game is fun addicting, with lots of things to master, lots of way to play it and everything is fun and challenging.
The only game that I Platinumed and in which I unlocked anything with over 70 hours of playtime, until mastering how to beat it on Non Stop Climax difficulty flawlessly

CASTLEVANIA: LORDS OF SHADOWS

This game is simply amazing, from the graphics to the slick gameplay, simple but deep.
Story is great and most of all, brilliantly narrated.
Add some epic scenery and you got a real winner

GOD OF WAR 3

Just an epic adventure that I played constnuosly until the YLOD
Not the best story, not a long game but jaw dropping and intense from start to finish

Can't think of anything else THAT awesome...Vanquish if it would have been longer maybe.

Thanks for sharing your list and not including Black Ops is perfectly fine. These are based on YOUR experiences of the games you played and YOUR appreciation of them. No one should feel pressured to add any particular game just because everybody else has or will or might

@Omega - Thanks for your list too, I knew Bayo would be on there

@Flame - I look forward to seeing the rest of your list.

So far NFS, Castlevania, AC:Brotherhood and Halo: Reach have all been picked twice. Interesting.

Heavy Rain- Got it day one and it was the most amazing feeling ever, going through into the night the more I played the more I got immersed into the game. The next two days I completed it 2 more times enjoying the different paths and story changes. It is one of the best gaming experiences I have had.

Demon's Souls, yep that was 2010 in Europe, even though I have an import copy it still counts Similar to heavy rain in the way it immerses you but totally different in every way. The story (or lack of it) in many cases is deep and amazing. The tension as you go through the levels and the feeling of weakness you feel on your first playthrough is incredible. Backed by an amazing integration of multiplayer features makes it a must own RPG and one of my favourite games yet.

On PSP it has to go to peacewalker (I would say Monster hunter but that is only Asian when it releases ) Peacewalker was incredible, it felt like a sequel to the MGS series and for a PSP game that is incredible. It is definitely the best PSP game this year but it misses a lot of features, such as why doesn't it have infrastructure support, portable ops and portable ops+ had it, and even though peacewalker is a better game than them I have more hours into both PO and PO+ than I do peacewalker, that is only because I loved the multiplayer. Apart from that problem the difficulty and progression systems are brilliant. (Oh and the monster hunter missions are great, Air strike inbound on a Rathalos' head XD )

Just checked my order on Amazon and delivery for NFS and AC:B is scheduled for tomorrow, while GT5 is 25th.
I love Burnout with a passion, so I'm really waiting for NFS even if I didn't love the demo.
AC2 has been awesome too and the idea of playing a game settled in my city intrigues me a lot, even if I know Ubi have messed something for sure , like the square where the Pantheon is, that is very tiny in reality.
I know it well since it was the meeting place of the metalheads of Rome and I passed there who knows how many week ends.

thats pretty cool, so is it pretty much exactly like it is in the game? that would be cool.

Of the games I have, I suppose I'd go Black Ops.

RDR was alright, but it couldn't entertain me enough due to the fact that the world felt too event-less and boring.

My pick would probably be different had I purchased more than two games over the course of the year... :/

Pfft. I've only played 3 (4-ish) games all year!

-LBP
-LBP 2 beta
-Black Ops
-MW2

So I'm just going to say that GT5 is my game of the year, even though I've never played it.

y'know, I'm a big fan of racing games, but I just never got into the gran tourismo series, don't know why, I think I tried one once and found the driving too realisitc, but that was a long time ago, maybe I ought to give it another shot.

PS3
Call of Duty: Black Ops
God of War 3
Heavy Rain
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

PSP
LittleBigPlanet PSP*
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

Technically, it came out just after majority of the game awards were handed out, so I consider it eligible enough to "compete" in this year's round-up.

That's a toughie...I'm going to have to say Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (but that's PSP, and they don't get GOTY awards, do they?), and Bioshock 2.2010-11-23 04:45:00

To state the obvious, only games released THIS YEAR are eligible and BETA's do not count. I reiterate, you can only select games you have completed or are currently playing through and love so much that you are happy to give them a GOTY nomination before completion.

Thanks to everybody who posted thus far, here is a summary of our selections (I have only included games that have been selected more then once):

Peace Walker - 4
AC: Brotherhood - 3
Black Ops - 3
Heavy Rain - 3
Castlevania - 2
GoW III - 2
Halo:Reach - 2
NFS: Hot Pursuit - 2
RDR - 2

Wow, it's good to see Peace Walker leading the charge! Keep your picks coming

I haven't played many games this year with LBP taking most of my gaming time. But the few times I did slip away I really enjoyed Heavy Rain and Red Dead Redemption. Both for very different reasons, Heavy Rain was an experience and I genuinely felt bad killing some of the characters so I could see all the endings I had grown that attached to them. I never got tired of it either on my replays.

RDR I loved the setting and the story. Very satisfying and as usual with most Rockstar games my place to let my dark side have fun :kz:

As stated in my post I only listed the game with more then one vote. However, having thought about it we might as well have all games listed that have been chosen. Here is an updated list (has also been added to original post)

Peace Walker - 4
Heavy Rain - 4
AC: Brotherhood - 4
Black Ops - 3
RDR - 3
Castlevania - 2
GoW III - 2
Halo:Reach - 2
NFS: Hot Pursuit - 2
Bayonetta - 1
KH:BBS - 1
Yakuza 3 - 1
Naruto - 1
Crackdown 2 - 1
Demon's Souls - 1 (my favorite game of 2009 btw, imported)
LBP PSP - 1

Grats on receiving your copies of NFS abd AC Omega, I suspect I will see you on PSN later this evening

So does it have to be one on that list? Because I was going to say Dragon Quest IX. It's an immense RPG that's great fun and lasts for ever (150 hours so far, 60 was the story, the rest is post-game) and the customization is great.

If I do have to choose one from there, then LBP PSP, even though I've never played it, as all the rest are boring to me.

PLEASE READ MY ORIGINAL POST, IT IS NOT THAT DIFFICULT LOL. I repeat for the third time, these are your personal GOTY picks. These are not "votes". Only choose games you have completed or are currently playing through and feel so strongly for that you think they deserve your GOTY nomination. You can choose games from any system. 2010-11-23 21:10:00

My Minecraft vote was not counted? Do i have to say why i think so? Well, here it is...

Minecraft
Minecraft is simple. 16 bit graphics is not great. But the game makes up for that in som many ways. The 16 bit looks beautiful when you look over the randomly generated hills. The map generator is a miracle in its own respect... What you can find is amazing, and the world generated is 3 times larger than the real world. Even though it lacks a story, it kind of builds it own. You can do incredible things on this game, and you have so many options. And it only costs around $20 NZ...

Being the console-savvy worker monkey I am, I've also composed a list of some of my own personal favorites.

Game of the Year- Red Dead Redemption
Ok, you guys. I know y'all will rub it in and say I'm suckering up to the game because I'm a Western nut. And to a point, I am.

But give it a hour or two, and you'll see why this is easily my personal fave. From the sweeping, rugged views of New Austin, to the mysterious badlands and formations of Nuevo Paradiso, the visuals simply take my breath away. Following the trail of the outlaw-turned-hero John Marston, the story is by far one of the best I've seen in a game, filled with characters you'd love to bits... and characters you'd love to hang at high-noon. The diversity of events and several stark, sometimes crude, situations will always keep you on your feet, with missions that change elaborately over-time. The controls for both cowboy, horse and wagon are tight, making you feel like a Wild West son of a gun as soon as you grab the controller. Along with a strong online component, and a steady stream of great DLC that literally gives a BANG for your buck, RDR easily steals my heart and my top spot for Game of the Year.

Best Downloadable Game- .detuned/Castle Crashers

Wow. Talk about your ebony and ivory. O_o

The first thing I thought when I downloaded .detuned onto my console was "What was I thinking. This is perhaps the STUPIDEST purchase I've made yet on the PSN..." Luckily, I was proven wrong. Just like the Linger in Shadows that came before it, this "interactive art" entrances you with its surreal atmosphere and odd (if not, downright weird) medium. And at some points, I was really questioning myself why in H***'s name I was playing. But for $2 bucks, and a slew of bronze & silver Trophies (and even a Gold), this was a steal, and was easily the best "poorly thought out" desicion I've made in a while. The options to warp and distort your own soundtracks was a nice touch, too.

The wait was finally over. My favorite Xbox Live exclusive made it's way over to the PSN... ABOUT ******* TIME, BEHEMOTH!! Over 20 controllable knights, each ranging in a slew of diverse attributes and abilities, encompass the side-scrolling smash-'em-up of Castle Crashers, easily stealing well over a week's worth of my life. Under siege and under attack, the lands of Castle Crashers are plagued with savages, monsters and enemies, and only YOU (and maybe a few others) can stop the madness and rescue the 4 princesses from the Evil Wizard's grasp. With colorful cartoony graphics, diverse and dynamic enemies, and controls that even a 2-year old can pick up, Castle Crashers is a smash-hit for any savvy gamer out there looking for some carnage and destruction in their life.

*buzzer sounds* WRONG, the ALPHA released last year... the game itself isn't technically finished, and with all the media attention its getting, i would expect to see it in stores once it is done... i mean, look at who is impressed by it!

ign~ even have a video preview!
Game informer~had a page long article and such
X-play(I.e G4) ~ has there own personal minecraft map, and spent 5-10 minutes of an episode explaining it.

and there are many others... its pretty obvious its gonna be in stores... at least make it best looking indie game of 2010!

Games I played that came out this year:
MAG
White Knight Chronicles
Super Mario Galaxy 2
God of War III
3D Dot Game Heroes
Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake
Fallout: New Vegas
Cave Story

Out of these, I don't think any of them are GoTY material. I play MAG the most out of them, and I really liked WKC, but I don't think they're good enough for it. Maybe Super Mario Galaxy 2. Yeah, I cast my vote for Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Please OCK, add Gran Turismo 5.
NFS is awesome, but GT5 is another planet.
You must really love cars to understand it, but it's so great.

*buzzer sounds* WRONG, the ALPHA released last year... the game itself isn't technically finished, and with all the media attention its getting, i would expect to see it in stores once it is done...

*buzzer sounds* IRRELEVANT! Either way, it is not eligible for a 2010 GOTY nomination

New nominations have been added to the list.

My GotY is actually NHL 11. I've put more hours into that than any other game in a while, and it's only been out since October. A close second is BFBC2, the best FPS of the year, which is set to get better with Vietnam.

Surprise of the year is CoD. It's not as bad as I thought it would be. It's just... not BFBC2.

Where to start.

Need for Speed Hot Pursuit definitely deserves a mention. Fantastic game and Autolog makes it incredibly addictive. The races are intense, especially in the later levels and free DLC of 3 cars has already been added and knowing Criterion, there's probably more free DLC to come. The only slight "flaw" in the game is that it's 30 FPS which means it's ever so slightly less responsive than Burnout but that's not much a complaint. The game is excellent and anyone who likes arcade racers should not hesitate. Haven't finished it yet but getting there on the Racer side of things so I feel I've played enough to judge it as worthy .

MGS: Peace Walker... HELLS YES!!! Although the later extra missions are ridiculously tough there is a hell of a lot of game here and I had an absolute blast playing it. Had a decent story, fantastic gameplay, really fun boss battles and some great extra missions, including Monster Hunter missions. Really enjoyed the game!

God of War 3. Epic game and much better character development than God of War 2. That was one thing I hated about 2, it was all rage and no heart. The addition of the black-and-orange cutscenes (which were beautiful by the way) and Calliope meant that there was a more human side to Kratos that was present in the first game and all but absent in the second. Truly loved the game and felt it was a fitting end to the trilogy... though the ending itself was a tiny bit disappointing. Still, overall excellent.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World. Absolutely loved this game, retro-style game that felt fresh with upgrading and unlockable moves. Made me love the film all the more... and the film made me love the game all the more . One of the best movie tie-ins ever made!

God of War Ghost of Sparta. Another fantastic God of War game. Much better paced than Chains of Olympus with a few really enjoyable slow moments that return to Kratos' past. Loved it, really says something when moments from a PSP game are truly memorable.

Persona 3 Portable. I rarely like RPGs but this is just fantastic! Climbing Tartarus is incredibly addictive, the story is fantastic and the characters are excellent. The social links are also great and does a fantastic job of keeping the story side of the game rewarding

Honourable mention: RDR. I know it's a good game. And I enjoy it when I play it. But I just never get truly interested in Rockstar games. I don't really know why. Happened with the GTAs as well. I think it's the story and the fact there's so much travel to get from mission to mission.

Disappointments: Prince of Persia Trilogy HD... laziest port ever!!! Really annoying. There is no excuse for the stretched menu screens and the textures that haven't been updated. Which is a pity seeing as the Theme available for free on PSN is fantastic!

PS. I just ordered Yakuza 3 based on your recommendation OCK .

@illuminationx - GT5 needs to get more props, thanks for the nomination. Btw, feel free to update the GT5 photography thread, I have a lot more pics to share!

@shadow - yeah it looks like you and I are the only people who played Naruto lol. Shame, it is one of the best games of this generation.

@Burrich - thanks for taking the time to leave so much insight into your nominations, I appreciate it. I hope you enjoy Yakuza 3, the game is incredible. Also, Yakuza 4 is coming to NA/EU Spring 2011 due to the strong sales of Yakuza 3!

Thanks for the nominations, list has been updated! I will set Jan 15 as a deadline for picks and then we will see which game has the most nominations and crown it LBPC Game of the Year (RDR is now in the lead with 9 vs Heavy Rain's 8)

@mrsupercomputer - I am guessing most of the people who posted only own a PS3 and have not played the game. I am pretty sure both ME2 and ME3 will be on my GOTY list for next year

Red Dead Redemption - for story/originality/technical achievement
Super Scribblenauts - for uniqueness
Deadly Premonition - For being completely different, it's probably a game I would submit to an Art Museum to illustrate "Games as Art"... it's like PLan 9 from Outer Space... so Bad that it's Amazing!

Am I the only person who thought that Mass Effect 2 was worse than the original? Getting rid of the Mako sequences in favour of a monotonous "scanner" was stupid, and they simplified an already simplified system, so that it was practically brain dead. I wouldn't even consider it an RPG anymore. It's more like Gears of War with 3 conversation options.

mmmh...
-Red Dead Redemption
No Words needed for that one.
I've spent so much time in this fantastic World with it's epic Story.

-God of War 3
What a Final! Just stunning! Good bye Kratos...boohooo...

-Assassin's Creed Brotherhood
I never had so much fun in a Multiplayer Mode until AC:B
Well...maybe except for L4D 1&2 on 360...hehe

Fallout New Vegas
Yes, it was buggy, the story wasn't as good as Fallout 3, but this was still an action packed game.
Medal of Honor
Never got the game, but played the BETA. Was pretty good, with some niggles.
Bad Company 2 Vietnam
Who doesn't love the 'Nam music and Huey
Red Dead Redemption + Undead Nightmare
Great story and gameplay. Undead had the same with ZOMBIES!! All they want is a hug and some food
& Just for the heck of it,
Resistance 2
Released in 2008, but I started playing this again and it's awesome! Co-Op with 2 friends has been this weeks highlight

I would like to make another nomination that nomination being MINECRAFT Beta, what can I say it's a brilliant game and it sort of follows play, create, share without the share bit(arguable). In my eyes it has stunning visuals and an endless amount of fun. Buy it, it's well worth the money.2010-12-29 18:31:00

I have to add another game to my list, Prince of Persia the forgotten sands. I just got it but it has blown me away. I didn't think they would re capture the magic of the PS2 games but it is everything those games were and the improvements made to the platforming makes it one of the most fun games I have played.2010-12-29 18:49:00

I'm going to come in a put a vote out for Fallout: New Vegas. I'd never played a Fallout game before, but got this one for a good price yesterday. It's really great in my opinion.

I'm obviously going against the general census when saying I don't find RDR that interesting or fun. I could see how it appealed to others, it just wasn't my type of game.

So, yeah. Fallout: New Vegas.

The only 2010 game I really spent time on was Phantasy Star Portable 2. And that's not really a goty.
And I'm flat out awful at Continuum Shift.
So I guess the best game I played in 2010 was Assassins Creed Brotherhood. Yay.

I usually play games from two-three years back. Keeps the costs down, lots of reviews too.

List has been updated, thanks for your picks. I am surprised so many people only nominated one game, there were so many AAA titles this year. Still, if I had to pick one game overall from my many nominations it would probably be RDR. I made a long post on the RDR thread back when it came out saying that it is my GOTY regardless of what else is released in the year because it's just that good! Next Friday is the deadline for nominations although I think it is pretty clear that RDR will take the GOTY crown as chosen by the LBPC community 2011-01-06 19:21:00

NHL 11 still deserves credit for being the best sports game ever. I'm not even joking, it's amazing.

NBA 2K11 is also up there.

I enjoyed Vanquish.

RDR was ok.

BFBC2 is amazing. BFBC2: Vietnam is insane.

No way! Am I really the first person to vote for Super Mario Galaxy 2? It's platforming gold and improved on the first one a ton. Even if you're sick of the plumber, it can't be denied that this an insanely well-crafted game.

Other games that I enjoyed last year are:

Red Dead Redemption

Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2

Heavy Rain

Super Meat Boy

Civilization V

Mass Effect 2

Fallout: New Vegas

And some cool indie games:

Super Meat Boy

Octodad
