Egyptian Tombs: Balance Puzzle preview

Archive: 4 posts

The work on my Egyptian themed level is coming along nicely. I rounded off a puzzle segment last night that I now need to test and tweak. No emulated logic here; it is all real gravity, balance and material's own weight. Here is a preview. Opinions welcome.

I still have to do some custom stickering; hieroglyphs on the back wall, explaining some of the following:

- Use all three weights to balance the scales (you can move them around, not remove or add any).

- The left switch controls the slot selection on the scales. The right switch the selection of which weight to place. The lever in the middle (spring attached so it goes back to off each time) places the selected weight in the selected empty slot on the scales. The weight of that type will vanish from its original slot on the scales and 'move over' to the selected slot.

- When it's in balance, the door will open.

- The white weight (stone) is exactly twice as heavy as the dark weight (wood).

- As you may have seen in the screenshot, slots closer to the center reduce the force that a weight has on that side of the scales.

EDIT: there are four different weight combinations so far that I have found to solve this puzzle. A friend claims there are 120 possible combinations total, so good luck if you don't use a bit of math or healthy reasoning.

I'm now quite sure what kind of feedback you want on this but it sure does look nice. It's also a nice twist on the classic balance puzzle since you have multiple slots on each side, which allows for more possible combinations of weights, which adds extra challenge. I think a little trial and error will be able to solve this very quickly (I can't say that for a fact), but that's not a bad thing. If it feels more complex than it actually is, then solving it may cause the player to feel even more satisfied than if it looked simple and was simple. I'd be happy to help test your level if you need it.2010-11-23 06:23:00

Thanks for your reply. I am pondering over the difficulty level of this puzzle and whether it is too hard to make it a required obstacle for players to complete the level. I had something more complex in mind, but the three weights just felt right to me. I'll tweak it a bit (the scales have a hard time offsetting the balance with only 0.125 weight difference and that kind of ruins the principle) and then publish a standalone test version for you all to play around with.

The positioning on the scale would also affect the weight it distributes, no?2010-11-27 17:11:00
