Apocalyptic Darkness takes place in a world that the level suggests. It's dark, it's quiet and the end has already passed by with you as the only living sackperson. The story drops you in deep within a cave of some sort and the narrative takes you from there, guiding and giving bits of information regarding the wasteland that you're now traversing. Let's take a look and see if this one is worth playing..

Graphically it was a pleasant surprise as you start underground. It's dark and creepy atmosphere with toxic waste laying around gave a good desolate feel. This sadly dissipated as you kept crawling through underground. You come across a series of robots that have obviously been left to there fate, but the detail put into these machines were lacking. Only a few squares and rectangles made up these advanced pieces of machinery. Saying they were bland and distinctly boring is the appropriate description. When you progress to the surface, it sadly does not improve with buildings that simply looked to be made of cardboard. There is no believability from the graphics and furthermore, it does not live up to the story and atmosphere that was obviously painstakingly created.

Sounds and Music was much in line with the graphics. They did not live up to the story being told and held back the atmosphere from engulfing you. This oddly enough got better as you progressed unlike the graphics that appeared to get worse. When you first begin, there is not a sound or music note setting the tune. This wasn't necessarily a bad thing as the lighting helped aid the desolate feel but perhaps it was simply that you could only hear your character jumping and the occasional fly's around the toxic gas. When the music finally did enter into the level, it was perhaps a perfect match and carried the atmosphere as you read through the levels story.

Gameplay was not much of a factor in Apocalyptic Darkness. While there were portions of jumping over spikes near the beginning and rotating triangles that tested your patience, gameplay was almost non existent or just down right boring. LaharlKun is obviously not aiming for the exciting platformer that we're mostly accustomed too, but really aimed for a deep story. This by no means is really a bad thing. It's your preference from playing a First Person Shooter to your Role Playing Game. Some people can handle the reading and actually thrive for that story to take them away from reality and into a completely different world. This was LaharlKun's focus.

Final Thoughts: This one brought so many mixed feelings and high expectations simply because of the story I was reading. It made me want to be in the story and sadly I was held up by the visuals. Clearly, LaharlKun is an excellent writer and it made me reminisce of some of the story's told in Zelda Ocarina of Time. Keep in mind, that Ocarina of Time is claimed to be the best in the Zelda series and should show what kind of impression his writing had on me. But what launched that one off the ground was far more than a story, it was the charming graphics, gameplay and of course memorable moments. Should LaharlKun grow in those additional areas, he will certainly have something special and of course a very successful level.

I rate Apocalyptic Darkness :star::star::star:

It's funny. I LOVE making levels, but I'm terrible at graphics. Absolutely terrible. Which subsequently also means that my levels are...well...yeah. In short, I was hoping story would cover it. Unfortunately, this isn't the case. Oh well. I succeeded in what I wanted to do, in writing a good story for LBP, and I pulled it off. Thanks for taking the time to review the level! Now to work on pretty things...2010-11-21 07:46:00

I believe your story did make up for the rest of your level. But the only way of making a 4-5 star level in my opinion is to be very well rounded in all of the categories that I rate. Luckily for you, most people can NOT write and most people who start making levels are poor and the graphical presentation is very lackluster. BUT, those same people grow in those areas and they seem to never grow in story telling. With that being said, I firmly believe you will get much better in your graphical presentations as you continue making levels.

Take Morgana25. You play some of her old levels and the story was there but the presentation was just average. Now, you have a story teller (Morgana25) and in all accurateness, an artist. Her levels are astounding with an immense amount of detail and story to back it up. I would play through her levels for inspiration and to see the growth from when she started to where she currently is.

You have it half licked just for loving the levels you create.

Good Luck!!
