[SPOILERS] Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1

Archive: 7 posts

SPOILER ALERT:
If you don't want to know what happens in the movie, don't read any further!

Not long seen this so I thought I'd make a thread for its discussion. I'm gonna give some of my opinions on it too.

It looks absolutely awesome. The special effects, the screenplay, prop/costume design, every last little detail looks so believable. Spells sometimes appear a bit repetitive but the Death Eaters and Dementors look suitably menacing, gliding along with awesome, tangible smoke dribbling behind them.
The music isn't very Harry Potter-ey. Not a single sound of the "Hedwig Theme" that starts off the other movies, or any other of John Williams' original compositions.
Some of the acting is phenomenal. The performances of the three main characters are superb. My personal favourite though is Helena Bonham Carter who plays Bellatrix Lestrange. In my opinion, she acts more evil than Voldemort himself in the movie.
The plot could be deepened a lot in this film because of the extra time, but it annoyed me a little bit that some things, like how Harry has never seen Bill or Mundungus before, are victims of the other films' inadequacies, and have to be added, rather confusingly, to this one. (and Fleur doesn't speak with an overly French accent - does anyone know if they changed her actress?)
Lots (and lots) of humour in this one. Great to see that good old wizarding gags can still be slipped in when the film is set in a largely oppressive mood.
There's a rather confusing block in the middle where not a lot happens, and random snippets of storyline get thrown in. This was my least favourite bit; it felt like the whole film was stalling. Nothing was really progressing, and there was a lot of unnecessary silences.
The animated Tale of the Three Brothers was very, very nice. Won't go into detail too much, but it looked awesome.
It felt like the movie could have gone on for another two hours, it felt incomplete. I know it's a first part, but still - I want more!
Cliffhanger = win. Obviously anyone who's read the book will know what happens, but it's still a great ending.
Feel free to add your own opinions!

I never liked the movies after The Goblet of Fire. The storylines were being focused on less and less.2010-11-20 01:50:00

Probably my favorite HP movie to date lol. The last one was more like a romantic comedy than a HP movie, and the ones before that generally left out too much detail imo. This one, being cut into two parts, captured everything it should have while also finally setting that dark tone that the series had previously strived for but had never reached, all while maintaining that HP-esque feel. Awesome! can't wait for part 2! 2010-11-20 09:59:00

I wasn't really too thrilled with it. Comparing the books to the movies has always bugged me, and that effect really caught up with this one. It also just felt really awkward how they threw in characters which had previously been ignored, as if they had been there all along. I'm also waiting for them to dig themselves out of the hole they made with a certain part of the movie. fetching the sword. If you've read the books, you know how it got there... Snape put the sword in the lake after hearing their location via the portrait of Phineas Nigellus... who is conspicuously missing from the movie I found it odd that despite the decision to extend the movie into two parts, they still left bits out. There was some good humor, which helped offset the depressing air the movie took on, and the special effects were quite good, but I think those are expected at this point. I'm still going to see the second of course, but the first didn't do much for me.2010-11-20 20:52:00

I adored it. It was freakishly close to the book (as close as they could get, I think, for it being a movie and for them having to add some stuff they didn't have previously... like Mundungus.) I think my single complaint was Mad Eye didn't get the greatest send-off. But that's how it was in the book anyway.

The actor for Fleur was the same. Technically in the book, she'd been practicing English, so maybe they just took that further in the movie because they didn't have time to expound on her character like the book did. She wasn't that important in either, though.

The confusing block in the middle is due a lot to that same portion in the book. Again, the movie captures the book almost perfectly, with the tiny problems in the book leaking into the movie. I think you'd find, though, that if you watched it again, it would make more sense and be less boring... just like reading the book a second time.

I agree, the humor was beautifully done. I loved it! I think my favorite was when Harry got that wand and "enlarges" the fire for a split second.

I also loved how much they could focus on the characters. The acting was better than ever, and they pulled off Ron's... er... thing... perfectly, from the argument to the locket. It was highly emotional and SO well developed.

And the ending was amazing. I simply can't wait for Part 2!

Me and my friend couldn't stop laughing right after the end of the movie when everyone screamed at the same time,"WHAT!?" But what did they expect? It was PART 1, which means no definitive ending, just build. At least it was better than Eragon's ending. I loved the new Harry Potter movie though, it's my 3rd favorite one. Looking forward to part 2 soon.2010-11-22 06:02:00
