This ads are specially bad on PS3 browsew, they take up a heck of a lot of spcafe and won't even load, it'll just show a blank block at the top of the page (blocking view to said area of the forum.)
Can't even close it, so I gotta refresh until its not there.

So...yeah, I'm against these ads as well, I don't mind the others, but these are just... :S

ridiculous

That aside, I have brought the issue up with the rest of the staff. I'm sure all of you who have posted here, with the exception of Yaru, agree that they are not very intrusive. The ads can be skipped, and yet they bring in a lot more revenue for the site. Ads are the only source of revenue here at LBPC, other than donations. So kill two birds and donate. You won't see the ads, and it will make it possible for LBPC to exist without as many advertisements in the future.

As for you, Yaru, we do not support the PS3 browser due to its inferiority, so we will not take how the PS3 browser interacts with the site into account.

Edit: Just to be clear, this is what everyone is seeing, correct?

Strange... I never had these kinds of ads, only the small banners on the top/bottom that don't interrupt the navigation. :/2010-11-24 19:28:00

The first time I got these was yesterday evening, and quite a lot of them, but now they're gone again.

Internet Explorer has frozen a LOT because of these ads, and Firefox isn't loading for some reason (btw, I have been changing over to Windows 7, so my dad still needs to change some stuff), so I am stuck with it.2010-11-25 06:04:00

Sucks when you click skip ad, and the button disappears, but the ad carries on...

I might end up donating sometime, but not sure. Might not be able to. I dunno.

I'm on a horse.

Heh, no worries, I just remembered if I turn off Javascript no ads show up, I usually leave it on for the regular ads to show, since I don;t really mind them, but I can just turn Javascript off when in the forum, no ads show up and all loads faster, two birds with one stone.

Well, that's a shame. I usually leave my ad blocker off and click ads to help LBPC out. But because of these annoying new ads, I'll be turning on the ole ad block. Sorry.2010-11-26 00:53:00

Gotta put bread on the table somehow. Does anyone have a better Idea on how to generate enough revenue to support a website besides donate (which I fully intend to do soon, money's tight right now)? Speak now or forever hold your peace.2010-11-26 03:11:00

Hmm, well I guess we could rent out a section of the site to an adult entertainment service. Or, maybe we could offer more incentives for donating but not to the extent of buying. Perhaps we could have different levels of donating or donate points. Then you can get special "gifts" for being an active donor.

Although the new ads aren't really that bothersome as I had first assumed. They're OK I suppose.

EDIT: A VIP section for only the wealthy and people with class.

Eh...it's all been done before, nothing original there.(Joking of course) I agree the ads do take away from the streamline transition from page to page, but it could be worse....we could all have to abandon this site due to it going bankrupt and have to go to lbpwrkshp instead. Have you been there, because this is heaven in comparison .

If the site does go bankrupt, its because of the users that are too lazy to click on some of the ads every now and then. Come on guys, show some support for your favorite site or we'll all be forced to LBWorkshop and you already know how much we all want to avoid that.

BTW, you didn't hear this from me

I am always weary of those "click here" ads because of rumors that there were nasty viruses implanted in the ads and it would crash your computer. Besides it's quicker if the Forum clicks it for us no? If the site wants to bring in real revenue then how about a signiture bake sale....Never-mind.

... Sorry, couldn't let that go. <_< >_>

... Anywho.

... Yeah, more people should donate.

Not me though, I'm... uh... look, a kitten! /runs

But did CC even specifically say to have more intrusive ads? My first reaction was that google messed up, but I unno. <_< >_>

When I'm clicking the skip ad button, my internet is fond of freezing, and yesterday afternoon I was getting them every single time I switched pages. That's why I said they were rediculous. Sorry if I wasn't elaborate enough.

Nothing in 2 weeks? That's it!?!

Well since I've been both a donor and eh... 'un'donor, let me just say I never really minded the Ads on this site. For the most part, they were relatable on some scale and were of the banner-variety either installed as a header or footer.

These 'new' pop-up ads (while still of some relevence) are quite annoying and do take away from my enjoyment and navigation of the site. In fact, I feel the need to ask if these new pop-up Ads bring in substantially more money for the site over the old, or, is this a willful attempt to increase donor pledges? Or both? Something tells me it's probably both birds with one stone, so respectfully, I don't like them.

Of course, I would just donate but unfortunately that is not currently an option. Incidentally, if this site ever did close... wouldn't that enrich the workshop to the point of being LBPC-like...atleast? Just didn't see that as a very strong debating point...

Oh, and I was watching a repeat of Tosh.0 (to my misfortune it was by accident) and he listed HOT 'available domaine names' and 'Candlepants' was one of them!!!! Is that where you really got it from?

I'm honestly interested how you guys feel about these ads. They sort of...happened as we switched advertisers, and when there wasn't too much uproar about them, I decided to see what the response was like.

Truth be told, guys, I'm going to college soon - the money I've been pouring into LBPC will soon not be there anymore, so LBPC needs to be driven by its community somehow. And until some anonymous benefactor donates an obscene amount to the cause, ads are honestly the only solution.

The last donation we got was over two weeks ago. And then before that, a month went by between donations. And donations usually amount to $5, $10, $20 - respectable amounts, I'm not complaining, but the reality is they're not going to support the site in any significant way. Ads are really the only reason we still exist. So if these full-screen ads do become an issue, I will remove them or change to another ad provider, but in the interim I can't afford to be picky. If you guys can live with them, we'll be able to stick around much longer as a result.

Edit: I've also been considering switching from our current Donor system to a Subscriber system. I'd probably up the benefits of being a Subscriber, and maybe do subscriber-exclusive key giveaways and things for future betas - some sort of incentive. I wouldn't want to split the community too much, but at the same time, the idea of a regular flow of income from our users is very attractive. I'm not sure how many people would opt into it, I'll be honest, but I'd do my best to make it worth however much it cost.

Ads truly don't bother me.

The only problem I have with them is when I click Community, quick links, or forum actions. Some of the ads are pushing those links under them. It's a bit annoying..

lol, no offense taken. The name sucked so we just relocated it to http://www.lbdreamworld.com

I would say even though the site has never really became a success, it was def. worth the time and effort. I learned so much valuable information from running the site that I don't really care what becomes of it. It's still nice to just have a little place of your own where you can just hang with friends and pretty much do whatever you want to the site without people on your back.

But like CC says, it is important to generate revenue in order for the site to sustain itself. Hosting and license renewal fees can really take a toll on the wallet after awhile. I think implementing CC's idea of a subscriber service is a good one as long as the incentives are well-appealing and the price is fair. TBH, I would expect a majority of the donations/subscriptions to be only from the most loyal site users. Many here are probably too young to independently donate/subscribe to the site so getting enough donations/subscriptions might pose a challenge. Nevertheless, there's not much to lose so it's definitely worth a try.

EDIT: There's also one important matter that may need to be investigated. It is important to remember that there is a fine line between donating and buying a subscription. Once you start selling something for purchase, you legally become a business. And like any business, you would be subject to laws, taxes, license requirements, regulations and whatnot. Even as a non-profit organization, you would need to file as one and report taxable income and show itemized financial statements. Nothing worse than having to deal with the IRS or risking litigation for bad business practices. Not to be a downer but it is crucial that you consider such ideas from a legal standpoint.

NOTE: I do not guarantee or warrant that the above statement is correct to the best of my knowledge seeing that it is somewhat limited at this stage of my life. It is advisable to consult a CPA or attorney who deals with business law prior to establishing such idea.

EDIT2: I see some of the fansite kit images are in use (header images). Mhmm, yes well, according to the agreement that must be accepted in order to use the images, some rules have been violated. First off, it is required to put a label on the site stating that the site was made using the materials from littlebigplanet as stated in document 1, bullet point 2 which states "Any fansite that you create using the Fansite Materials must include the following notice: “This site was created under Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Limited’s Fansite Kit Terms using materials from LittleBigPlanet.”." Secondly and lastly, it is not allowed to use the images if you sell subscriptions or advertising space as stated in document 1, bullet point 4 which states "You cannot use the Fansite Materials if you make any money or gain any other commercial benefit from your fansite, for example by charging a subscription to other users, selling advertising space on the fansite or selling anything from it"

Seeing that we're now a site on the run, I guess we should become one of those underground sites

Yeah, I know. It's something I've been thinking about a lot. I personally don't have the money to make LBPCentral into a legitimate business, with all the fees etc, but that doesn't mean it can't happen. I'm exploring my options.

lol, I see the users are still making fun of us.

I spoke to Dracca LeVad in a conference yesterday, and he agreed to allow me to post his essay here. His essay was locked on lbpcentral, as some users felt 'intimidated by his superiority'. A shame, for it is such an amazing insight on a peculiar perspective of the benefits of heart-for-heart. He asks that this discussion remains civil and educated, and expects more than from lbpc.
