Questions from someone thinking of buying PSP/LBP

Archive: 8 posts

I have been thinking of buying a PSP and LBP PSP. The only reason I'm getting PSP is for the PSP version of LBP. I just love LBP that much. The music in the PSP version is amazing, especially Neopolitan Dreams by Lisa Mitchell.

I've spent nearly a couple years with the PS3 version, which has been the best experience since I've began gaming at 5 years old. I'm now 24 years old and going on 2 years with LBP and no end in sight. In past year and a half I have only bought 2 or 3 new retail games compared to what I use to all because of my LBP addiction, lol.

I use to have a PSP long ago until who I thought was a friend borrowed it when they had to drive out of town. They never returned. Considering the cost of a PSP at the time I decided to not even bother buying it again. But now LBP is making me want to buy it again.

My questions . . .

-I collect the DLC in the PS3 version, every bit that comes out. On PSP is there enough memory to be able to collect all the DLC?

-Is the analog on PSP as responsive as PS3 one? Basically I'm wondering if physics and analog response is so different on PSP that even if you're a seasoned player on PS3 version, playing PSP feels completely different/have to gain skill all over, or does being skilled player on PS3 version help any with PSP? Regardless it's no biggy. Learning again is fine. Just curious. And of course I know the PSP feels different than a PS3 controller. So to make more clear what I'm asking, pretend you were playing LBP PSP with PS3 controller, and now I ask skill question.

And the most important question . . .

-When I was looking to buy a PSP Walmart had 2, PSP 3000 and PSP Go. I'm wanting to buy the cheapest PSP I can buy new, not used. I'm assuming those are only 2 out there, so I guess $199 is cheapest for PSP right? I don't think the difference between Go and 3000 is so different people would recommend Go, is it?

Please reply, and thank you. ^^

Hey there.

I only really know about the PSP-1000 to PSP-3000 series, so I'll try to answer some of these questions as best I can.

Memory:
Assuming you go with the digital download of LBP PSP (1.3gb in size I think) you'll need at least a 2gb memory stick, but it's preferable to have a 4gb or 8gb -- assuming you plan on getting more than just LBP PSP on there. That should be more than enough to get all the DLC and a slew of downloaded levels.
The PSP-Go comes with 16gb built-in memory I think.

Analog stick:
The analog stick is different on the PSP. The nub simply slides while keeping the same orientation, if you understand what I mean. This makes it a little different to know how far you are from the center position, but you can learn how to tell through use.
Playing LBP PSP doesn't require too much precision though, the collision detection is much more lenient than on the PS3. Platforming can still be a challenge though.

PSP-3000 vs PSP-Go:
Well this is an old debate, but it basically boils down to a few factors to consider.

Price: Amazon.com currently lists the PSP-3000 at 169.00 USD and the PSP-Go at 189.95 USD
Design: Everything from weight, to button positioning is different between the two, but it's a question of personal taste on which you prefer.
UMD: The PSP-Go has no UMD, so if you're intending to get any UMD-exclusive games (I think mostly Square-Enix does this IIRC) you may regret getting a PSP-Go. On the other hand, digital downloads are faster and consume less power than UMD games, but both platforms have access to these games.
PS3 Controller: The PSP-Go can be connected with a PS3 controller (and bluetooth headsets I believe).
Power: I think the PSP-Go lasts slightly longer and runs games slightly better than the PSP-3000. I'm not entirely sure about this though.

My recommendations:
I can understand the draw of LBP PSP, but I generally advise against getting a console for just one game. Look at other PSP games, and even PSP minis games (http://www.pspminis.com/), to see if there's any other games that may also interest you now or in the nearby future.

I agree that the music on LBP PSP is awesome. I keep wishing they would release an LBP PSP music pack for PS3 just so I can hear some of the tunes on the PS3. Anyway, there's some differences between LBP PSP and PS3, and it's important to know them and see if they would bother you. Feel free to ask more questions about it here.

For now I gotta run! Hope that helped.

Thank you Gilgamesh! ^^

I do know about the battery difference between the two. I heard both systems have same battery life, but PSP Go has smaller battery for reduced weight, but consumes power at different rate compared to 3000's larger battery, but same amount of life is achieved from both, or at least this is what I heard.

This is tough choice. Being able to connect PS3 controller to PSP Go alone almost sells that version to me. But I think I'd have to go with 3000 because I still have 3 or 4 of my old PSP games, plus Square Enix is one of my favorite publishers and I own every FF except the PSP ones like Crisis Core. So while LBP is the only game making me want to get a PSP, there are other games I have been wanting to play for long time, but not enough to where any of those games alone would make me want to get a PSP.

I also know of the differences between the PS3 vs PSP LBP, or at least I think I do, like I know there are only 2 thick planes instead of 3 . . . and that's about all I know besides anything I've seen in videos of LBP PSP user levels, lol.

I do have another question though, is there a way to output a PSP so you can use your TV as the screen? That's not a big deal, but would be a nice option if there is such a hookup to buy to be able to do that.

I've read that the PSP-2000, PSP-3000 and PSP-Go all support video output. You need to buy a special cable for it though, because I don't think it comes with the package.

That feature alone is one of the reasons I constantly have to fight the urge to buy another PSP to supplant my PSP-1000.
Though I mostly play the PSP on-the-go anyway so it's not so bad.

The PS3 controller connectivity is a very interesting feature of the Go, unfortunately I keep buying UMD games mostly, because I like collecting the game boxes and I already had plenty of UMDs already anyway.

I find it kind of strange that some companies choose not to sell digital. I don't really see the advantage in that, unless Sony is asking for too much of a cut for digital downloads.

The thing with LBP PSP is not to expect the quality you get with the PS3, it is simply not possible with the far smaller processing power. Many PS3 creators find it hard to adjust to the different style of the PSP, but if you stick to it you will discover the benefits of simple things like static and dynamic. Its a very good game and overall a successful transfer to the portable console.

Just remember that LBP PSP is still quite unstable, it can be incredibly frustrating to lose levels due to a freeze. You must take precautions such as backing up your save data and making copies of your levels. Get into the habit of doing that and LBP PSP can be really great fun.

About the analogue stick, this is mostly fine with a undamaged PSP, however PSP's are quite prone to the analogue stick becoming faulty and unresponsive. When this happens it can be devastating and make creating a pain in the thumb. Luckily I believe the problem is quite easy to fix with some PSP surgery.

Hope that helps! -DZ

I heard that using the GO's analog stick hurts the thumb because of the crater thing its in. Seeing that LBP PSP is analog stick-exaustive, I suggest the PSP-3000.2010-11-20 13:34:00
