PS3 Hard Drive Upgrade Questions

Archive: 4 posts

I have the old 80Gb backwards compatible PS3. I'm running out of room now. Is it possible to put the 320Gb hard drive into my PS3? If it is possible, will there be any problems? (such as messing up my backwards compatibility, or anything). Is this something I could do without really knowing anything about computer parts and all that? I saw a 320Gb hard drive online for like $85. It's definitely alot cheaper than buying a bigger PS3.And it's a "kit" so I'm sure it comes with step by step instructrions too. Plus I like my oldschool model. Any insight into this matter, tips advice, instructions, whatever, would be greatly appreciated.2010-11-15 00:58:00

Check here (http://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-3-General-Discussion/The-Unofficial-PS3-Hard-Drive-Upgrade-Thread/m-p/4908795?query.id=123769#M8) or here (http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-3-Media/How-To-Guide-to-Upgrading-Your-Hard-Drive-Updated-8-26/m-p/28102378). Should have everything you need to know and there are links to youtube videos in there showing the process. Pay particular attention to the parts about hdd compatibility (wouldn't wanna' buy a hdd that won't work). There's no potential for messing up your backwards compatibility (unless you break the whole system--it wouldn't be bc then ). If you're unsure, you might want to enlist the help of a friend/family member with experience in working on computers/electronics, but it's overall a fairly simple operation.

This is just coming from me, so it might not be 100% accurate, but I would go with a 5400 rpm hdd if possible to reduce heat. The ps3 runs very hot and I'm pretty sure it's the leading cause of failures, so you don't want to add any more heat than absolutely necessary. If I'm wrong and a 7200 wouldn't be a heat problem, feel free to correct me.
