Trouble In The Canyons has all the mixtures of the most commonly used themes in LBP. Canyons and Mines. I know I know, your thinking the same thing. But before you pass this one up, you should really take a closer look. BooXely has something special and it does separate itself from the herd. But the big question mark is playability and execution.

The story is an interesting one, you start off with your car breaking down and your left stranded in a remote town. As you travel you learn the towns water supply needs to be fixed and its up to you to do so. In order to accomplish this you must travel deep within the mines where you learn what evil lies inside and its up to you to eliminate the villain and restore the towns water supply. In this process your faced with several unique challenges.

Graphically its almost top notch. While BooXely is clearly a surgeon with his corner editor tool, he falls slight short on some of the smaller details such as pipes. The pipes were re-created using the rustic metal material and unfortunately it looks very out of place with a wonderfully created world. The pipes are simply two dimensional and have no depth in the design. With the exception of this nitpick, the level is done very very well. The two rope rails looked fantastic and even the lighting couldn't get any better. Stickers were also a good addition and were not overly used.

Sounds and Music was another great addition. The entire level was fairly sound in both but did lack the environmental sounds. I felt I should hear the wind blowing by me as I was up high on a ledge over looking this little town but there was none. Nor was there any drips in the mine where water was present or a small sound of an insect. It was just left out and absent. However, anything you did interact with did have an associated sound effect which was done nicely. Music was very good and switched in select areas to match its theme and mood.

Gameplay was where this one became very good. You were challenged with small little puzzles through out the level that had you going from switch to switch. They were all cleverly designed and done fairly well, but I felt they could use a bit more polish. There's a portion where you are challenged to shoot targets with your paintinator and you are warned not to miss. The warning couldn't be more true as your immediately gassed if you miss just one shot. This portion became quite frustrating with just one miss causing a death. Fortunately it's short lived and your moving on to the next little challenge. It seemed that the level had not been gone over with a fine tooth comb as there was a piston visible pushing a fish and magnetic keys visible as well. Not only were those visible, there were little bugs present as well. There were two portions I fell to a spot where I needed to restart to a check point. At one point I was able to run the length of the level underneath it all where I was obviously not suppose to be.

Final Thoughts: This was an excellent level and I enjoyed every bit of it. But there were obvious issues that needed to be addressed and were not. If the bugs, the environmental sounds as well as some of the cinematic portions and the obvious graphic touch up were complete, this would be easily a 4 to 5 star level. And yes, it really is that good it just needs that TLC.

I rate this 3 1/2 :star:'s

Thanks very much for the review, I'll go and see what I can fit into the thermo! I did fix the "Don't Miss" section, the penalty is now activated after 5 misses. Thanks very much for the review though, you pointed out some things I really probably should fix.2010-11-13 02:21:00

No problem! It was a great level to play through. I think the review was done a week too early in my opinion. The F4F will help iron out all those little kinks and small issues and this one surely will be a good one. I had a good time with it, excellent work.
