If Trees Could Speak *SPOTLIGHTED*

If Trees Could Speakjaslow
A platforming level set inside a tree.
I've recently published If Trees Could Speak.

I've worked on this level for quite some time, and it's been a frustrating but fun experience.

You platform through a dying tree, through timers and catapults and rotating sponges.

A huge thanks to ToykyoMegaplex and camberley6 for their visual work. Grayspence and Prattz also helped with testing and gray gave me a puzzle idea.

Here's some create mode pics.

Feedbakz!

Really fun level, had a lot of fun. The gameplay was seamless, the puzzles were fun, I can't really say anything negative. Everything was kept very simple, which made it hard to mess up gamepay wise. The visulas were nice, if a bit over used. There weren't any errors that immediately popped out, I rally ran into no problems with the level!

:star::star::star::star::star: level, with a <3 from me!

(Would you mind doing my level for F4F? It's in my sig.)

Outstanding level. I love the time based obstacles. At times they were a bit frustrating, since there isn't a spawning portal at every corner.

If I had to suggest an improvement, I'd have a look at storytelling. After all, this is inside a tree, apparently alive, and the title is "if trees could speak". I was slightly disappointed that the tree never talked to me. What if he did? What if he gave a bit of coaching along the way? Just a thought.

Again, great level!

Added some pics to the OP.

As for the story, I had an ending sequence that had the tree collapse to the ground, but due to insane lag caused by it I got rid of it. I still have the pieces of the sequence left in create mode though. It was intended to be an epic "tree-logy" but the original story isn't going to work. If this level gets good enough feedback, I might make a sequel, but I'd have to tweak the ending a bit.

Anywho, I'm currently on the third page of Cool Levels. Woot! It's brought a ton of plays.

Very fun level!

Likes:
-A lot of the platforming was challengingly strung together
-New style to platforming, felt fresh and unique
-Usage of the layers was also nice, well thought out level

Improvements:
-The material style isn't too unique, similar to others but had a few flairs of its own style

Overall fun gameplay level! Kept me on my toes throughout it.:star::star::star::star: and <3

Please play my "The Distant Crystal: Part 2"

Played this a couple times . Had to show this to my friends. The timed platform challenges were very fun but I thought a few had too much time to pass but it might be good as is. I just like the feeling of the door shutting and you barely making it . Also love the none linear style and how you made your spring jump pads. Really cool level and very multiplayer friendly (played with 3 on my last run through). The visuals could use a little more detailing like the mgs crack stickers or something else but the gameplay makes up for it. 5 stars and a <3 from me.

In return, could you play my level Steampunk Skallywags? The link is in my signature.

this was a great platformer... almost reminds me of flaming timberlands series by jackofcourse cause there was so many fun mechanics, and it was long and rewarding. you CAN die, but you're not beat over the head with the difficulty... very fun multiplayer. you got a really nice look in your material set and geometry, crisp and clean, without alot of clutter and stickers.2010-11-13 20:46:00

Ok so I played this level last night so I'm doing this from memory. First thing I thought when I entered the level was ,"oh no, not another one of those wooden levels," you know, the generic ones that all recycle the exact same look, gameplay and music. I'm relieved to say your level is much above that. Even though I've seen this visual style many times before, you still had your own personal twists on it, which made it stand out. The timed gameplay was fun, but like L1ghtmare said, sometimes it feels like you have too much time. But I understand the reasoning for giving more time as to accommodate for teh noobs. The varied challenges accompanied by the long length of the level made it really fun to play through. I'm glad your level is the length that it is. Great job with the level; keep up the good work.2010-11-13 22:53:00

I'm thinking of doing Iftreescouldspeak, with less time to do everything, and all of the wheels faster, etc.

What do you guys say?

Great Platformer! Such a good balance of elements, nestled in a perfect cavity of difficulty, the backbone of lbp levels. Great job!2010-11-14 22:37:00

Thanks for the criticism, it really encouraged me to give my level a total re-vamp. Would be hugely appreciated if you could check it out again and tell me what you think!

Just played this level, thought it was nicely decorated and challenging, however I felt it lacked reason to continue playing and none of the challenges felt rewarding enough. Maybe you should try adding more point bubbles throughout the level and maybe even some secret areas with points in as well, this would probably give the player a greater reason to search and continue playing the level. However though, I did give this level a :star::star::star::star: rating. Very well done!

I think I managed to die a thousand times (!) through the first half of the level due to frustrating trial and error bits where I couldn't make out one material from the other, and the general inconsistency of Sackboy's jumping. But the second half was much more fun!

Only improvements could be to make it more obvious at the very beginning that you're supposed to drop and grab the sponge material at the spike pit. I kept looking around for some kind of switch to activate something. That, and a personal complaint would be how brown the whole level was. I get that it's a tree, but aren't there tons of wood materials? Maybe shifting what wood is used, along with shifted lighting throughout the level would have made each segment a bit more memorable.

Just my two cents! Still a fun time :}

+ Level icon.
+ Nice magic mouth text.
- The camera is a bit awkward at the start. The player needs to see the lower part to the right more clearly.
+ Nice green wood in the back layer. Plus the sponges look interesting.
- On the 2 rotating wheels, the thin layer in the front is too thick and blocks the view of sackboy from the player on the left near the bubble. Plus the player should also be able to see said prize bubble.
+ Timed gameplay.
+ Random knight for no reason!
- @ "1P at a time", the player can't see the sponge above.
- More camera trouble. =( Cameras shouldn't move while the player is holding onto a sponge that rotates 306 (imo).
- More cams. Hard to see what's ahead, and the centre sponge is a little hard to see. I like the concept though.
- Hard to see the thick platform layers as they are hidden by the thin ones in front. It's the branch ones that are repeated in the later section. Second most important thing to fix in the entire level.

Yeah, pretty decent level, the the cameras are the killer here.
The player shouldn't have to inch their way to the end of a platform in order for the camera to reveal what's coming up next. Play through the level again with that in mind, and I'm certain the level will be better for it.

First of all, thx for reviewing my level. Heres my review for you:

pro
+Good visually, not so innovative but nice and suitable
+Awesome platforming, good mix of classic and new parts
+Good lenght, not too short and not too long
+Well chosen music, fits perfect

Theres nothing negative that i can report ^^. At first I was a bit suspicious because of the title. I thought that it would be boring. But I was really positie surprised. It is a great level with good obstacles and a perfect difficulty:

So I played your level the other day. So here's what I liked:

-Nearly everything
-The aesthetic
-The music choice
-The platforming

A few little things you might want to improve upon:

-The "1P at a time" signs have the "1" and "P" too close together, looks like a 4.
-The part with the moving platform where the platform goes through a gap and you have to switch layer to get to the other side... I think you can fit through the gap. You could add some horrible gas in there.'
-At the part with numerous spinnning sponges, there's a yellow spotlight. Although the spotlight itself is hidden, it's location is obvious due to the end of the beam. Maybe move it further off-screen.

Five stars.

great level! it amazes me how people make such good looking levels. i try but i guess i just don't have an eye for it, lol. the platforming/timing was perfect. the only flaw was the cameras. i think you need to fine tune the camera zones because at certain points (the one where there are sponge circles suspended together by rope with fire on the walls next to them) i kept having my camera shift back to obstacles that were earlier in the level, like through a wall. there were other parts where this happened but that one stood out. overall great level! 5stars!
