The Dark Castle 3D (full 3D, real water & endboss)jenne1980
Hi there!

I finally comleted my first 3D level. I used a lot of 3D layers to make it look very threedimensional.

Story: The king's castle has been conquered by the evil forcess of darkness. Are you strong enough to face them? Some very scary enemies and a giant evil endboss awaits you. Is there still hope for the kingdom?

Have fun and leave a feedback if you like. Here some screenshots:

Hey, great level. The use of the 3d layer glitch is really well done. You have truely captured the old castle feel with a clever combination of materials, lighting, sound and the 3d layer glitch. The bad guys are well designed, although some are quite easy to get past. I loved your spiral staircase design. Very well done. Also your spider design is very clever.
Well done. 4 stars and a heart. Tagged Beautiful.

F4F: Please play and leave feedback for my level Time Bandits Of The Holy Land. (link below) Thanks.

Positives:
+3D used looked really good
+Gameplay was okay
+Design of the whole building looked good
+Visuals looked great
+Enemies were pretty well built

Negatives:
-Felt it lacked a bit of the story other than the king just being trapped inside but maybe its just me.

Overall the level was pretty good::star::star::star::star:

Just played this level and have to say it was awesome. It had a very castlevania type feel to it which I was very impressed by. My only criticism would be maybe add a soundtrack to the level or a bit more story, as beautiful as it is it does a lack a real sense of purpose and drive that makes the player want to continue. If the player dies a couple of times in this level I don't think they'd have much drive to continue, so a deeper story and atmosphere would probably help this. However, very good level and I thought the final boss was excellent, good job!
My Rating : :star::star::star::star:

F4F: I just recently released a new minigame level and would really appreciate it if you could give it a shot and tell me what you think? Thanks

Hi I'm replying to your F4F. Please play the Level in my signature.

The Dark Castle is an incredible experience. It's not something that exceeds in game-play but is a spectacle just to play through. Your grasp on art, theme and atmosphere are incredible but to make a seriously impressive level you need to utilize the game-play element with the spectacle. For example leaving one enemy plopped in the middle of a room doesn't make the room any more interesting. One thing I had never thought of but loved was spiral stairs, they were quite cool. The final boss was average. His design was well made but did nothing but dropped fire balls and was quite easy to beat, I suggest spicing it up a bit. Another thing I loved was how natural the sound went with the level and how it was followed up by real lightning flashes. My verdict was :star::star::star::star: because it was more like an inspirational visit that something I'd play with my friends. Work on those thing and your sure to get more plays.

Cheers,

Thank's a lot for your feedback. You are right, the enemies are easy to beat. But the difficulty of a level is always a balancing act. If you make it too easy, some people say it's boring and if you make it harder, many people (let's say "casual gamers") quit your level when they die 2 or 3 times in a row.

But it's correct that I should have made a better connection of gameplay and story to make a "deeper" atmosphere. The problem was the full thermo bar. But now -as I know how to use the thermo glitch- I could add some more characters/ story elements to the level. Maybe I will do that when I find time.

Hey, just finished playing your level and WOW. Your use of the 3D layer is very good, you have really nailed the castle look and feel, i loved the mini tombstone puzzle. Your enemies were amazing, i loved the knights and that scary spider was excellent. One minor point, i dont really think you need that speech bubble that tells you (at the first enemy) to jump on his arm to reach his head, but thats only a minor point. Also, perhaps you could put invisible Dark Matter up the sides of the (amazing) spiral staircases, i fell down 3 times in a row, but again, that does not affect the level what so ever. I gave your level :star::star::star::star::star: and a <3 well done oh and if i could be nosy, could you please tell me how you got the 3D layer just on the front rows, ive been searching for something like that for ages, just cant find anything, thnx.

F4F could you try my level 'Tales from Steam City: Union Freight' in my sig, thnx

Thanky you for your very positive feedback!

The only trick on 3D-layers in the foreground is to have good foreground tools. If you only have a foreground tool from the front normal layer to the front foregound layer, you can't have a gap between foreground objects and the normal layers.

So the trick is to have a foreground tool with a big gap between the tool and the normal layers because you can only move the tool in the direction to the normal layers. I found such tools in a 3D tutorial level, but I can't remember the name. They are named front-front-3-layers, front-middle-3-leyers,front-rear-3-layers and so on. I think you can easily find such tools by searching for 3D foreground tools.

Of course I'll play your level as well and give a feedback within the next days.

Played this level and it's such a good level from the moment you enter to the end!

Pros:
-Beautiful Details
-Lovely use of the 3D glitch
-Enemies are very detailed and clever.

Cons:
-Not much of a story (but hey it was so much fun to look at i didn't need a story)

Suggestion: With such a high quality level you should change the icon.

I gave it a 5 star rating and a heart! :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: <3

F4F: Can you check out my level and tell me what you think? Thanks!!

Beautiful Beautiful level!
Levels are usually gorgeously built, or are fun to play. It's really hard to get that balance. You did it much better then most.

Now the playability doesn't make me want to jump out of my chair and play it over and over again... but that wasn't the point. It's a work of art.
