LittleBigPlanet to import images by Christmas

Archive: 64 posts

http://www.lbpcentral.com/images/import.jpg

Well, it looks like it's finally going to come our way. Importing images into the game without having to use the PSEye. Check it out:

Talking at GameCity in Nottingham today, Alex Evans was asked about the lack of image import in LittleBigPlanet.

The news? He confirmed that this was only pulled from the release of the game because of time constraints, and that the image import tool would be released by Christmas.

For those (many) people that were upset to hear that the PlayStation Eye was going to be the only image import option this will indeed be (completely non-religious) music to their ears.

We?ll have more news from GameCity soon, so keep checking back.

I'm just so glad they aren't holding it back because of copyright stuff. Then there would never have been a patch. Of course they will enforce copyrighted stuff, but at least they are giving us ability to use it. This was my number one item I wanted in this game. 2008-11-01 16:48:00

HELL YEAH! Lol, this is good news, but to tell the truth, after having played the beta and now the full game, there is so much stuff you can do to make it all unique, I don't actually see this as necessary, but a handy and cool tool none the less

Even if they enforce the exact same lower res image size, at least we can import things clean without graininess and the other ill effects of using a cheap camera.

Well, here's one guy that's surprised by this.

Unfortunately this means that it'll require me to think about one more thing when creating levels. Importing images to levels is quite a big new dimension. Might need help from some texture artists at some point.

This will be fantastic! *Thinks of the possibilities*

It would also be good if we could import our own music/videos aswel. But that might lead to insulting or rude levels being published.

They are already working on water. I'll quote Mark Healey from our interview (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=3228) with him:

Is water still planned for the game? If so, were you planning to release it via DLC or in the final build?

By water, I assume you mean ?real water? that acts like real water does! ? This isn?t in the initial release, but we have some cool ideas for how to integrate it into a possible future DLC ? of course, it will have a slight LBP twist to it?..I don't know how long until we see it in the game, but it's nice to know they are working on it.

Best news I've heard since I found out it wasn't going to make the initial release.

I was *this* close to caving on my promise to never buy a PSEYE and was totally annoyed that I would have to hold it up to my PC screen just to get stuff in-game.

To be honest, I'm regretting getting a PSEye now that this is coming. The quality just isn't up there quality wise.

That would be awesome allowing things to appear more natural, but this is good news overall , me and a mate were talking about this guess we dont have to but a eye toy or ps eye.

I'm glad that I didn't give in and buy a PSEye in time for LBP now.

I hope that we can import High Res pictures though, but if we can't its no big deal.

Personally, I can't believe how much Mm are putting in to this game so soon after its release, most companies don't add anything for about six months.

Same here. I use it to video chat over the PS3 for hours with my best friend in Canada. A very cheap and efficient way to keep in touch and communicate with people.

I thought this was a bit fishy, since I do know a bit about programming and know that image importing would've been really easy to implement. But I'm too tired to be skeptical and get the wrath of the boards upon me. Also, the source seemed pretty viable this time.

But, here's a quote of SamProtagonist (http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=littlebigplanet&message.id=179461#M179461), dated 1st of November:

There are a couple of these rumours flying around today, so to clear things up - image importing is very much technically viable which may have been what Alex is referring to, however there are currently no plans to introduce it for a variety of reasons. Announcements of future content releases, whether free, paid for, feature update, costume, sticker or whatever will always come through the official websites for LittleBigPlanet and Media Molecule, if you hear of updates through any other source please take it with a pinch of salt until it has been confirmed or denied.

Right now there are no plans to introduce image importing to the game, and we'll update if that changes.

CC or other mods, could you please edit the topic of this thread to reflect this turn of events so that people won't me mislead? Also, a news article on the front page might be good, too.

Anyway, Sony doesn't know diddly squat. They should let Media Molecule do the announcements. They're the one actually WORKING on the game... Besides, what do you make of the picture then?

EDIT: And by Sony, I mean Sam.

Seems the tail is wagging the dog and neither MM or Sony knows what the other is doing.

Source Kotaku (http://kotaku.com/)

As of right now, the only way to import images that one can plaster upon the levels of LittleBigPlanet is courtesy of the PlayStation Eye, EyeToy or "other compatible USB camera." Great for capturing one's nether regions, but less great for transferring one's original artwork and digital photos. Fortunately, that's about it change, according to Media Molecule's Alex Evans and, oddly enough, the developer's Flickr photo stream.

PS3 Attitude wrote that Evans said to expect a proper image import tool by the end of the year. Speaking at GameCity in jolly old Nottingham, Evans reportedly said the feature was cut due to time constraints.

Word from the official PlayStation forums, however, places some doubt on that claim, with SCEE's Senior Community Development Manager Sam "Protagonist" Bennett writing there are "currently no plans to introduce it for a variety of reasons." That's right. "No plans."

But... a newly uploaded pic of said image import tool just popped up on Flickr today, noting that it's a "work in progress." It's pretty clearly noted that LittleBigPlanet will let you "import images from your PlayStation Hard Drive to use as stickers." It even notes it thrice, for extra emphasis. File it under safe bet.

SO take it as a maybe yes, maybe no, sorta kinda, answer

Sony controls the online aspects. Sony doesn't want image importing. Media Molecule clearly wants it, because it would make their game much better and more diverse. It's clear that they're at odds with this. The correct and responsible path of informing from LBPC's part is to stress out to the community, that it is in no way certain that this feature will make it. I'm not a fan of having the topics state these kinds of news bits as fact. For instance, this thread is currently titled 'LittleBigPlanet to import images by Christmas'. It would be much better for everyone if the title was 'LittleBigPlanet might get image importing after all, by Christmas'. This way at least there's no reason for people to take this for granted.

It's better to err at the side of caution than to raise false hopes to players. That'll just cause anger and frustration on part of the ones who take everything reported as granted.

The video chat is pretty cool. It also acts as a room mic, which I've always though the Xbox 360 needed for when you've got a group of people over and you're playing online.

If you think about this it makes sense why Sony doesn't want the import option. Sony would stand to sell a lot more PSEeyes if it was the only option to import or capture images. I was considering picking one up until I heard the news about the import option patch. Being a graphic designer I would much rather use Photoshop and Illustrator to create things than snapping a shot with the PSEye.2008-11-06 17:22:00

Exactly.

With import, the possibilities expand beyond execution and creativity to things that will be remarkably polished visually... which is still pretty hard using just the PS Eye (without pre-made stickers).

If Sony should get in the way of this, I shall be very annoyed indeed.

Yes, they wanna sell more Eyes, blahblahblah. But seriously; how many people do they think will ACTUALLY buy them JUST to put low-quality stickers into the game?

Not that the Eye is bad, mind you. I have one since I picked up Eye of Judgement awhile back (which is very good). And alot of people of course use it for video chatting and stuff like that.

BUT. The photo quality isnt very high and it seems to have major issues with lighting.

It just doesnt work for the stickers, for the most part.

I always note, though, how execs like that always tell you they're doing something like this "for a variety of reasons". But they NEVER will actually tell you what those reasons are...... likely cause they're well aware that customers will think it very, very stupid.

It's not in the interest of the companies to let customers in on all the info and reasoning behind their choices. Of course they never disclose the information, since there's absolutely nothing to gain for them to be open about these things.

Why isn't there an update on the front page about the latest turns on this issue already?

"Media Molecule has released the first ever screenshot of a new LittleBigPlanet tool that'll allow level designers to import image files from their hard drive to use as stickers.

According to Media Molecule co-founder Alex Evans, the new tool is ready for use and is just awaiting final approval from Q&A before being made available via an upcoming LittleBigPlanet patch.

'The work is done on the tool, and it just needs to go through QA and then certification.'

This latest addition to LittleBigPlanet will allow users to import image files such as textures to paint and create objects. For example, importing an image of brass will allow the user to create a metallic like texture for objects.

Stay tuned to PSU.com for more details."
