Video Games: Playing it Safe

This was on a pamphlet handed out to us at our school today... "If your fingers ache while squeezing oranges or if your child suffers from unexplained neck, finger, or wrist pain, video games and electronic gadgets could be to blame. Young children may not be able to recognize the warning signs of overuse of their fingers and wrists and know when to stop playing. Kids who play video games for more than an hour a day increase their chances of having neck, finger or wrist pain. With the awareness of the problem, we proposed ways to limit the playing time, improve posture while playing, and introduce stretching exercises to warm up and relax the body parts before and after playing. Our solution is to propose to game manufacturers to make the game itself monitor whether kids are performing these tasks. The games can be designed to make the kids take frequent breaks, stopping to stretch for at least five to 10 minutes after 30 minutes of play time." I find this hilarious, imagine being in the middle of creating your level, when the game tells you to get up and stretch, and won't let you back on for another 10 minutes. And his happens every half hour... The parents a my school are crazy... | 2010-11-12 05:34:00 Author: booXely Posts: 654 |

I'm sure I remember it telling me to rest my eyes by staring at something way off into the distance. And it told me not to smoke / EDIT: http://cache.kotaku.com/assets/images/kotaku/2008/06/snakesmoke.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3165/2630755348_1172fbc7d4.jpg?v=0 http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a140/likchan/mgs4install.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t78/gamercyrus/15-minute.jpg | 2010-11-12 05:38:00 Author: SR20DETDOG Posts: 2431 |
Haha, I haven't seen that. I doubt this parents organization would want kids playing MGS anyway, it involves guns! | 2010-11-12 06:10:00 Author: booXely Posts: 654 |
I recall having a game that told me to get a rest after a while. Or was it MGS 4 too? lol, anyways, as long as its not a forced lock, I don't really mind. Imagine: "Finall boss ultra mega difficult mode, you're both 1 hit away from defeat, going for the final charge, gotta time everything carefully runing aaaaaand/ You gotta rest 10 mins... FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU" Also would be horrible for online play... | 2010-11-12 06:35:00 Author: Silverleon Posts: 6707 |
Also would be horrible for online play... I can imagine... Between games in CoD all you would hear over the mic is lots of 12 year olds groaning and whining... | 2010-11-12 06:39:00 Author: booXely Posts: 654 |
My neck often sees strenuous activity when gaming. | 2010-11-12 07:06:00 Author: Unknown User |
My neck often sees strenuous activity when gaming. Everyone knows the biggest cause of strained necks is prolonged periods of sitting in comfortable chairs whilst making no sudden movements In fairness, all the stuff about taking breaks and looking into the distance and getting away from the screen is good health advice, even if it is just another part of our massively overbearing EHS culture In related news (OMG Technology is ruining your kids), this story (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-11720546) annoyed me recently... Apparently kids who have friends and interact with them are more likely to have fun. Oh noes. | 2010-11-12 10:19:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
120 text messages a day!? I send maybe one or 2 a day if I averaged it out. Many days I don't even use my phone. | 2010-11-12 10:34:00 Author: SR20DETDOG Posts: 2431 |
You should also stand up every 30 minutes in class and walk around the room to relax your back. PS: It says in pretty much every manual for a game to take a 15 minute break every hour. FYI PPS: If your fingers ache while squeezing oranges or if your child suffers from unexplained neck, finger, or wrist pain, video games and electronic gadgets could be to blame So my fingers can ache just because my child plays video games? I didn't know that was possible. | 2010-11-12 10:40:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |
So my fingers can ache just because my child plays video games? I didn't know that was possible. Nice spot. I like how orange squeezing is highlighted as one of those vital everyday activities that might be impacted by the overplaying of videogames. I think we need to get this information out to masses ASAP. Every minute, somewhere in the world, an orange is being inadequately squeezed | 2010-11-12 10:47:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
My fingers ache if I squeeze an orange really, really hard. Does that count? | 2010-11-12 11:07:00 Author: Asbestos101 Posts: 1114 |
Every minute, somewhere in the world, an orange is being inadequately squeezed Lol! That reminded me of one of those charity commercials! This "Timmy has to walk 10 miles for water every day" will be turned into this: "Timmy has to walk 10 miles to the shop to buy proffesionally squeezed orange juice." | 2010-11-12 11:09:00 Author: AgentBanana Posts: 511 |
*reads through the whole thing* ... *checks date* What the... It is not 1st of April? @rtm223: On the other side of that story, frequent use of a cell phone doubles your risk of getting brain cancer... But who needs a cellphone to have fun, right? | 2010-11-12 15:31:00 Author: moonwire Posts: 1627 |
On the other side of that story, frequent use of a cell phone doubles your risk of getting brain cancer... Really? (http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Risk/cellphones)......... | 2010-11-12 15:38:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
Well, recent studies show people who don't own cell phones, on average, live longr than people with terminal cancer. | 2010-11-12 15:43:00 Author: booXely Posts: 654 |
Well, recent studies show people who don't own cell phones, on average, live longr than people with terminal cancer. Now I'm curious to see if cell phones kill more people anually than coconuts... | 2010-11-12 15:46:00 Author: gdn001 Posts: 5891 |
There is a trophy in flower for taking a ten minute break Worst ten minutes of my life, I had to wait for five minutes after making a bread... | 2010-11-12 16:07:00 Author: napero7 Posts: 1653 |
I like how orange squeezing is highlighted as one of those vital everyday activities... Maybe its a metaphor...? O_o ...Every minute, somewhere in the world, an orange is being inadequately squeezed Because if it is, that just makes that phrase 10x funnier! XD | 2010-11-12 18:23:00 Author: Silverleon Posts: 6707 |
@rtm223: The study do just say that there is no found link between cell phone use and cancer. And the studies show may as well be paid for by the mobile phone company, which means they were flawed anyway. As said in the text some data was even left out, because it was "inconclusive" and that leaves me kind of doubtful. | 2010-11-12 19:42:00 Author: moonwire Posts: 1627 |
I can play as long as i want, but i ofc need to do my homework first. I do not utilize the opportunity so much, though. 'cause i don't wanna get square eyes!! O_O lol, remember my parents said that when i was younger ''If you watch TV too much, your eyes will take the form of the tv. A square!'' | 2010-11-12 19:50:00 Author: Jonaolst Posts: 935 |
The one of looking away the screen for a while is a very good advice, it sometimes makes your eyes hurt if you keep looking at a screen for a long time! | 2010-11-12 20:11:00 Author: Ragnarok Posts: 898 |
I've never had the eye problem, but I have a 56'' HD plasma TV, so that might be why. I can see why they might hurt if you had a smaller screen though, the text is hard to read sometimes. | 2010-11-12 21:52:00 Author: booXely Posts: 654 |
playing at safe FTW i always wear a helmet with gaming | 2010-11-12 22:00:00 Author: Unknown User |
between every fifteen minuites on the computer, I get up and squeeze citrus fruits to see if my hands are broken, and now i am completely blind due to squeezing too much acid in my eye. there's a health warning for you | 2010-11-12 22:11:00 Author: flamingemu Posts: 1872 |
making a bread... Sorry, I have to ask: What exactly does this mean? It's one of those lovely mistranslations that I wish was a proper English phrase | 2010-11-12 22:52:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
Sorry, I have to ask: What exactly does this mean? That's exactly what I was thinking... I assumed it was something to do with Flower, some secret phrase for hardcore Flower players only. If you can be hardcore and play Flower that is... | 2010-11-12 22:56:00 Author: booXely Posts: 654 |
You know, you younglings may mock, BUT as your body ages and your joints get stiffer, you do indeed start to suffer some forms of RSI (repetitive Strain Injury) from gaming, etc. I am living proof. And while squeezing oranges isn't generally on the list of things I do regularly, things like activating the petrol (gas) pump can become really painful and difficult to do. It does have an effect. AND you can bring those symptoms on early by overuse of those joints. So if the game suggests you should get up and move, why the heck not just get up and move? What's the harm? It's easy to sit for hours on end when you're engrossed and not even realise and if the game is tense, it does impact on your neck and other joints. Been there and done it (and still doing it!). And physio and chiropractic treatments are $$$$ - which is money you can spend much more profitably. So don't ignore the advice. Take it from a "senior" LBPC member who is a bit further down the track of physical deterioration than almost all of you | 2010-11-14 08:50:00 Author: BabyDoll1970 Posts: 1567 |
Take it from a "senior" LBPC member who is a bit further down the track of physical deterioration than almost all of you At least im not the only who has one hand on there back and the other on the knee after just getting up!! Quite honestly, its disgusting as im in perfect health.....except for those stupid joints. It's like I tell my girls, video games are fine and we can have a full day of video games, but I will be darned if thats all they will do. We will have some sort of exercise through that time....even if its going to the kitchen and peeling some oranges | 2010-11-14 09:02:00 Author: John82wa Posts: 221 |
So... What you're saying is that your teachers want to stop us from exercising our fingers? D: I don't they can get most of the programmers to do it. | 2010-11-14 15:43:00 Author: JspOt Posts: 3607 |
I hope they don't get most programmers to do it, that would be terrible... I just remembered Wii Sports asks you to take breaks as well, just before you play a game. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.geek.com/hwswrev/game/wii/nintendowii21.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.geek.com/hwswrev/game/wii/index.htm&usg=__EEw9Su96WIGDODKbxqMO-mMm6ug=&h=307&w=440&sz=63&hl=en&start=0&sig2=42mMZdl9RarqheedD_WRgw&zoom=1&tbnid=pwii1ukdVGu5qM:&tbnh=153&tbnw=215&ei=GLTgTNiFI4yksQOW55i2Cg&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dwii%2Bsports%2Btake%2Ba%2Bbreak%26um% 3D1%26hl%3Den%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox%26rlz%3D1I7GGLL_en%26biw%3D1259%26bih%3D 772%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=964&vpy=529&dur=93&hovh=187&hovw=269&tx=154&ty=117&oei=GLTgTNiFI4yksQOW55i2Cg&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=21&ved=1t:429,r:20,s:0 | 2010-11-15 04:17:00 Author: booXely Posts: 654 |
I actually game half of the time while standing upright, I can't stand sitting down for long periods of time. Also while using the computer or consoles I like to stop and walk around every 5-10 minutes. If you want something that kills your back, how about sitting for 45 minutes per period in a school while hunched over to look at your papers and constantly writing something? I was recently in a school for the first time in forever to take an exam for something and was reminded of how much stress my body must've been through. | 2010-11-15 14:50:00 Author: Foofles Posts: 2278 |
I dunno. I think it obvious that too much of anything isn't good, but I've never occurred myself any video game related problems except slight cases of addiction. /inexperience That being said, you cannot text and drive at the same time. /topic | 2010-11-15 15:33:00 Author: Fishrock123 Posts: 1578 |
