The origin of spam...

Archive: 18 posts

I have seen the word used a lot of times, bearing the meaning of unnesessary and repeated content. But where does it originate from? I had no idea before I watched this Monthy Python sketch a little while ago...

So is this the origin of spam?

Apparently this is the origin, at least this (http://www.thegoodword.co.uk/2010/09/20/the-origin-of-the-word-spam/) article has the same video featured.2010-11-10 18:02:00

Spam (the meat) must not be popular in America because I've never seen or heard of it here...

What is it like?

Can I please remind people of the site rules that state:

Stay on topic and post only if you have something to contribute to the conversation.

Just because the thread has "spam" in the title is not an excuse not copy/paste crap all over it. If you don't understand how a discussion of the origins of the term "spam" is different from actually spamming the thread, then I suggest you click your back button and go about your business. Thank you

To clarify: this is related to the posts I've deleted, not the ones that remain here.

Spam was actually invented in America during WWII as a way to maximize usage of food resources for solders by making use of otherwise unused meat stock and came into public circulation after the war due to relatively popular demand. It's actually a pseudo-acronym that stands for Shouldered Pork And haM, although there are numerous other joke acronyms for it (such as "Something Posing As Meat"). As far as it's taste is, it really depends on the individual and you generally either love it or hate it (I like it, but I will admit it is saltier then most people care for their meat to be), although from what I hear it's very popular in Hawai'i.

Frankly, given it's origins and who you are, I'm surprised you haven't heard of it.

In regards to the topic; I always figured spam became synonymous with internet trash mail because both consist of "unwanted refuse," but I guess the Monty Python origin sorta makes sense...

@Dapiek Absaroka: Did you look at the Wikipedia page or something?
Well Spam was probably only invented when the internet became a huge thing because that when kids caught on.
